Adrian Wojnarowski leaves ESPN for GM job at alma mater

Adrian Wojnarowski left fans with one last Woj Bomb – his retirement from ESPN and news reporting.

ESPN Senior NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski is retiring from his position as one of the leading news breakers in professional sports to become the general manager for the men’s basketball program at St. Bonaventure, according to a press release from the team.

“I’m thrilled and humbled to return to St. Bonaventure with an opportunity to serve the university, Coach Mark Schmidt and our elite Atlantic 10 men’s basketball program,” Wojnarowski said. “In these changing times of college sports, I’m eager to join a championship program that combines high-level basketball, national television exposure, pro preparation and NIL opportunities with an intimate, supportive educational environment.”

Wojnarowski, who graduated from St. Bonaventure in 1991, has been a major benefactor to the basketball program for many years and wanted to take a step back from the hectic lifestyle that is 24/7 news reporting and give back to the program that helped foster his love of basketball.

“This craft transformed my life, but I’ve decided to retire from ESPN and the news industry,” Wojnarowski wrote. “I understand the commitment required in my role and it’s an investment that I’m no longer driven to make. Time isn’t in endless supply and I want to spend mine in ways that are more personally meaningful.”

General Manager roles have become common for football and men’s basketball programs across the country, with those in position helping to navigate the transfer portal, NIL collectives, recruiting, and overall fundraising – all roles Wojnarowski expects to fill for the Bonnies.

“I’m hopeful to share with members of our community some best practices learned from the most successful franchises and minds in the NBA and committed to opening doors globally for our players both on and off the court,” Wojnarowski said.

The Bonnies have made the NCAA Tournament three times in the Mark Schmidt era dating back to 2007. They were ranked No. 23 in the 2021-22 preseason AP Poll, and last year went 20-13 and 9-9 in conference play.

UMass extends head coach Frank Martin through 2029 season

UMass Minutemen head coach Frank Martin received a contract extension to stay in Amherst through the 2028-29 college basketball season.

Following the first 20 win season in over a decade, the UMass Minutemen extended head coach Frank Martin’s contract for two more seasons, keeping the 48-year-old in Amherst through the 2028-29 college basketball season.

Martin and his coaching staff will all receive raises, per the team’s release. Martin’s first contract was a five year deal signed in 2022 that paid him $1M per season, but he’ll earn a bump after leading the Minutemen to a 20-11 record and a fourth place finish in the Atlantic 10.

“I am unbelievably excited personally, for our staff and players that this university believes in us and asked us to be a part of the present and extend us well into the future,” Martin said in a statement. “Together with our supporters, we will continue to build this program and get it back to a championship level like it deserves and assist the university as we transition to a new conference. I have tremendous enthusiasm for this opportunity that Ryan Bamford and Javier Reyes have afforded me.”

UMass had not finished above .500 in conference play across a full season since they went 10-8, and 17-15 overall, in the 2014-15 season under coach Derek Kellogg. Led by Josh Cohen (15.9 points) and Matt Cross (15.3 points), last year’s Minutemen squad went 11-7 in league play and lost to VCU in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

Martin was the head coach at Kansas State from 2007-2012, making the NCAA Tournament in four of five seasons before taking over at South Carolina ahead of the 2012-13 season.

Martin only made the big dance once at South Carolina, but it was a run all the way to the Final Four in 2017 before the team fell by four to Gonzaga – narrowly missing a matchup against North Carolina for a national championship.

Notre Dame adds transfer guard Anna DeWolfe from Fordham

The Irish get a big scorer.

Notre Dame has made its first addition via the transfer portal of the offseason. That addition is former Fordham guard [autotag]Anna DeWolfe[/autotag]. DeWolfe will play out her college eligibility with the Irish after four seasons with the Rams. She’ll be a big scoring addition, too.

DeWolfe 1,883 points at Fordham rank eighth all-time in the Atlantic 10. She was the conference player of the year in 2021 and has been on the past three all-conference first teams. During her collegiate career, she has averaged 17.0 points a game, which ranks ninth in conference history. She led the conference in scoring in 2021 (20.8) and was second in 2022 (17.8) and 2023 (18.4).

DeWolfe is no stranger to Notre Dame. Her first collegiate game in November 2019 was a 60-55 Irish win in which she scored 10 points in 37 minutes. The Irish beat the Rams again, 71-56 , two Novembers later. DeWolfe also scored 10 points in that game but shot 4 of 17 from the field.

The Irish have a talented roster already, but they always could use some reinforcements. This is a big one. The only question is how well her game will translate against tougher competition in the ACC.

Report: Shawn Stiffler hired as Notre Dame baseball coach

Like the hire?College World Series

With Link Jarrett moving within the ACC to Florida State, Notre Dame needed a new coach to build upon its College World Series berth. Less than three weeks after the end of the 2022 season, the Irish appear to have found their man. According to Matt Fortuna of The Athletic, VCU coach [autotag]Shawn Stiffler[/autotag] has been tabbed as the Irish’s next coach.

Stiffler just completed his 10th season as Rams coach, accumulating a 352-207 record during that time, including a 42-20 record in 2022. Stiffler has led the Rams to the Atlantic 10 Tournament title and the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two years and in 2015. They also won the regular-season title in 2019, and Stiffler was named the conference’ coach of the year.

During Stiffler’s tenure, the Rams produced four All-Americans, five Freshman All-Americans and 43 all-conference players. Here’s hoping that success will carry over against the arguably tougher competition that will come with this new job.

Tale of the Tape: Individual Leaders – Notre Dame vs. Massachusetts

What are your thoughts on these numbers?

Notre Dame is about to find out just how strong it is in the NCAA Tournament, and it begins against Massachusetts. Never mind that it’s an ACC team going up against the Atlantic 10 Tournament champion. Everything goes out the window it takes only one loss to end your season. The Irish might have had a better season than the previous few, but the Minutewomen will come out just as hungry to prove themselves on the biggest stage.

You could look at the above chart and interpret it a couple of ways. The Irish have lower numbers in a lot of categories either because they have greater distribution of stats among their rotation, or the Minutewomen have players who are able to carry the team to victory almost by themselves. Whatever it is, we don’t know how much it will factor into the final score of this game. All we know is only one team will be able to say it was their leaders that paved the way to victory.

Notre Dame to play St. Bonaventure in 2022 Gotham Classic

Did you expect this opponent?

Notre Dame knows at least one of its nonconference opponents for the 2022-23 season, and it’s not one that was on anyone’s radar. That opponent is St. Bonaventure, which the Irish will play in the 2022 Gotham Classic at UBS Arena, the new home of the New York Islanders. It will be the Bonnies’ second straight season playing a prominent ACC program at a neutral site. This season, they lost to Virginia Tech in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Irish are 5-2 all-time against the Bonnies, but the teams have not faced each other since a few days before Christmas in 1994, which the Irish won, 57-54. That marked the third straight season in which the teams met, and it snapped a two-game losing streak for the Irish in the series. Before that, the Irish had won all four previous meetings.

The Bonnies have a 20-8 overall record this season and have a double bye in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament.
