[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Atlanta Hawks visit the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday to kick off each team’s 2023-24 season. Tip from Spectrum Center is set for 7 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Hawks vs. Hornets odds and make our expert NBA picks and predictions.

Season series: First meeting; Hornets won 3 of 4 last season

The Hawks ended last season 41-41, good for 7th in the East, and 36-46 against the spread (ATS) while exiting the playoffs in the 1st round after a 4-2 series defeat against the Celtics. Atlanta finished 17-24 on the road during the 2022-23 campaign. It is led by G Trae Young and enters Wednesday without any notable injuries.

Charlotte finished 27-55 last season, good for 14th in the East while going 37-42-3 ATS. The Hornets are led by G LaMelo Ball who played in just 36 games last season but averaged 23.3 points per game (ppg) when he did play. Charlotte was just 13-28 at home last season.

The underdog won in each of the 4 games last season.

Hawks at Hornets picks and predictions

Prediction

Hawks 124, Hornets 117

Moneyline

There are better odds on the spread when betting on Atlanta, who should be able to take care of business on the road on Wednesday against a less-talented Hornets team.

Against the spread

BET HAWKS -3.5 (-110).

The Hawks had a promising year last year before their playoff defeat to Boston. Young averaged 26.3 ppg and 10.2 assists per game (apg) while C Clint Capella averaged 12 ppg and 11 rebounds per game (rpg). While Charlotte has young talent in Ball, it does not have the firepower to keep up with Atlanta on opening night.

Over/Under

LEAN OVER 236.5 (-105).

Both teams have young talent who will be eager to open the season with a bang on Wednesday, but with young talent comes lax defense which leads to an array of scoring for both sides.

Last year, both the Hawks (6th) and Hornets (9th) ranked top 10 in the league for pace, showcasing their willingness to push the ball and in turn, create easier scoring opportunities.

Hawks at Hornets picks and predictions

Prediction

Hawks 124, Hornets 120

Moneyline

AVOID.

The Hornets are 2-2 in their last 4 road games while the Hawks are 2-3 in their last 5 road games. The value for Atlanta here is too steep to play, and consideration for Hornets (+170) should be in the mix.

Ultimately, pass on the moneyline and play the spread.

Against the spread

LEAN HORNETS +4.5 (-105).

The Hornets are 2-2 ATS and straight up in their last 4 games at home.

Atlanta is 14-16-1 ATS on the road this season and is bound to be a public favorite as Charlotte has been one of the worst teams in the NBA. The Hawks are just 14-19-1 ATS against Eastern Conference opponents as well. They are also just 3-6 ATS as a road favorite. This isn’t a spot Atlanta has done well in.

Also, the duo of G LaMelo Ball and G Terry Rozier should abuse Young’s defensive shortcomings. For a small unit, back HORNETS +4.5 (-105).

Over/Under

BET OVER 239.5 (-112).

The Hornets and Hawks both have high-tempo offenses. They rank 7th and 9th in pace respectively. They rank 13th and 18th respectively in offensive rebounding rate, so extra opportunities on the glass could be there.

Atlanta is 5-4 O/U in its last 9 games. The Hornets have scored at least 112 in 3 of their last 5 and should have success against a weak defensive backcourt in Atlanta.

The Hawks give up the 10th-most points to guards (65.9). The Ball-Rozier duo should have their way. Expect a high-scoring battle.  Back the OVER 239.5 (-112).

Atlanta Hawks at Charlotte Hornets odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Atlanta Hawks at Charlotte Hornets odds and lines, with NBA expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Atlanta Hawks (20-25) meet their Southeast Division co-tenant the Charlotte Hornets (26-20) Sunday at Spectrum Center for a 7 p.m. ET tip-off. Below, we look at the Hawks vs. Hornets odds and lines, and make our expert NBA picks, predictions and bets.

Atlanta won and covered its third consecutive game by squeaking past the Miami Heat 110-108 Friday as a 1.5-point home favorite.

The Hawks are 3-4 straight-up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) with a minus-5.6 adjusted net rating (ranked 25th) and a minus-4.4 ATS margin (ranked 28th) over the last two weeks, according to CleaningTheGlass.com (CTG).

Charlotte is also on a three-game win and cover streak with the latest being a 121-98 beatdown of the Oklahoma City Thunder as an 8.5-point home favorite Friday.

The Hornets are 5-1 SU and ATS with the second-best adjusted net rating at plus-10.2 and the best ATS margin at plus-7.3 in the last 14 days, per CTG.

These teams split the first two meetings this season with the road team winning and covering both. Also, the Under has cashed in four of the last five Hawks-Hornets games.

Hawks at Hornets odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Hornets 124, Hawks 117

Money line

PASS with a heavy “lean” towards the Hornets (-160) since they are on the fringe of my price range for an NBA regular-season money line favorite.

For what it’s worth, Charlotte is 6-2 SU as a home favorite and Atlanta is 5-10 SU as a road underdog.

Against the spread

“LEAN” to the HORNETS -3.5 (-110) for a half unit because I prefer the Over more than the sides in this game. However, this is a better spot for Charlotte.

The Hornets are an NBA-best 15-4 ATS at home with a plus-3.6 ATS margin. While the Hawks are 8-15 ATS on the road with a minus-1.9 ATS margin, 3-7 ATS on the road versus teams above-.500 and 5-10 ATS as road underdogs.

Ultimately, the dealbreaker for my “LEAN” to the HORNETS -3.5 (-110) is how bad the Hawks are in tight games. Atlanta is 29th in clutch net rating at minus-22.6 while Charlotte is 17th at minus-0.4. “Clutch” is defined by a game that’s within a 5-point margin with five minutes or less in regulation.

Over/Under

BET the OVER 235.5 (-110) for 1 unit because both teams are awesome offensively and weak defensively. Plus both have edges they can exploit.

Charlotte gets out in transition at the highest rate in the league and is second in fastbreak points per game (PPG). Whereas Atlanta has the worst transition defensive efficiency and is 20th in fastbreak PPG allowed.

However, Atlanta can pick-and-roll (PnR) Charlotte to death. The Hawks initiate PnR action through the ball handler at the second-highest rate and the Hornets rank 26th in defensive efficiency versus ball handlers in PnR.

On top of that, Atlanta is second in offensive efficiency in the PnR through the roll-man and Charlotte’s defensive efficiency versus the roll-man grades in the 35th percentile.

Also, this total is shockingly high considering the head-to-head O/U trend between these two teams. In fact, this total is 11.5 points higher than the most recent Hawks-Hornets meeting, Dec. 5. But, that game soared over the total of 225 by 32 points and I like this meeting to go Over as well.

BET the OVER 235.5 (-110).

Atlanta Hawks at Charlotte Hornets odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s Atlanta Hawks at Charlotte Hornets NBA odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Atlanta Hawks (28-25) travel to meet the Charlotte Hornets (27-24) at Spectrum Center at 1 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Hawks-Hornets odds and lines, with NBA picks and predictions.

The Hawks rolled up a 120-108 victory as 2.5-point favorites on Friday night at home against the Chicago Bulls. They have won five of their past six games while also going 5-1 against the spread across the span.

Atlanta’s offense has come alive, too, posting 108 or more points in seven in a row, and 10 of the past 11 games.

The Hornets finished off a six-game road trip on Friday with a win in Milwaukee, 127-119, and they ended up going 4-2 overall and ATS on the trip.

They’re looking for redemption after losing 101-97 in overtime to the Phoenix Suns on March 28 in their most recent home game.

Hawks at Hornets: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Hornets 108, Hawks 106

Money line (ML)

The HORNETS (+115) are back on their home floor looking to push past the Hawks (-140) for the third straight time.

Charlotte won 113-105 on Jan. 9 as 5-point underdogs, and the Hornets won in Atlanta on Jan. 6 by a 102-94 count as a 6-point ‘dog.

The third time won’t be the charm for the Hawks, as the Hornets will win again. They just have Atlanta’s number.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The HORNETS +2.5 (-110) are a good bet as short ‘dogs at home. The public has been on the Hawks -2.5 (-110), too, mainly due to the fact the Hawks are 5-0 ATS in the past five as a favorite.

However, the Hornets are 4-0 ATS in the past four at home, and 8-2 ATS in the past 10 overall. More importantly, Charlotte is 9-2-1 ATS in the past 12 at home against Atlanta, and 4-1-1 ATS in the past six meetings overall.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 218.5 (-110) is a great play here. The Under has hit in eight of the last 10 meetings in Charlotte. The Under is also 12-4 across the past 16 games for the Hornets.

While the trends for the Hawks point to the Over, the Under is the lean here due to series trends, and team trends for the Hornets.

Hawks at Hornets: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Hawks 126, Hornets 108

Money line (ML)

The HAWKS (-200) can be backed for the outright win, albeit at a chalkier price. Both teams shot just 38% from the field in Wednesday’s meeting, but Atlanta was undone by a disastrous 7-for-40 performance from 3-point range. The Hawks are shooting 36.2% from three for the season to rank 15th in the NBA.

The Hornets used a 36-point fourth quarter to cap a comeback victory over the Pelicans Friday. They trailed 38-22 after the opening 12 minutes but turned it on late and got 27 points off turnovers to the Pelicans’ 14.

Hawks PG Trae Young, an early MVP contender with 25.9 points per game and 8.4 assists per game, will have a key edge against the tired Hornets backcourt.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Hawks are the No. 1 rebounding team in the NBA with 49.0 rebounds per game while the Hornets are 14th at 44.9 RPG. Factor in the tired legs and a weaker defensive effort, and Hawks C Clint Capela should add to his 13.2 RPG average for the season.

Take the rested HAWKS -5.5 (-105) to get some revenge against a tired opponent. Atlanta was a 6-point favorite Wednesday, so we’re getting better value as it looks to end a three-game losing skid.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 228.5 (-110). These two fell way below a projected line of 232.5 Wednesday, but that was with both teams shooting well below their season averages from 2- and 3-point range. A little positive regression from either side will get to the Over on a line 5 points lower than it was three days ago.
