Video showed Panthers players telling Falcons fans ‘See y’all in Cabo!’ after season-ending OT win

NFC South rivalries are BACK.

After Week 17’s loss to the Commanders, the Falcons went into Sunday’s Week 18 matchup against the Panthers needing a win and Bucs loss to take the NFC South title. But even though the Buccaneers ended up handling their business against the Saints, it was clear that the Panthers wanted to end the Falcons’ season themselves.

NFC South rivalries are officially back.

Despite an impressive performance from Michael Penix Jr. at quarterback, Bryce Young picked apart a Falcons defense that looked incapable of generating any sort of pass rush. When the Panthers doubled down on the Falcons’ elimination by way of a Miles Sanders touchdown in overtime, Carolina had a clear message to the Falcons faithful at Mercedes-Benz Stadium:

“See y’all in Cabo!”

Postgame video showed Ja’Tavion Sanders and Jadeveon Clowney repeating that message to Falcons fans. Sure, the Panthers were never in playoff contention themselves, but they were glad to take the Falcons into the offseason with them.

Panthers QB Bryce Young talks about his career day from Week 18 win

A confident Bryce Young talked about his five-touchdown performance from the Panthers’ 44-38 win over the Falcons on Sunday.

The story of Bryce Young’s second NFL campaign has been all about confidence. And after starting 2024 with very little of it, the 23-year-old quarterback just ended the season with more than we’ve ever seen out of him.

Young led his Carolina Panthers to a 44-38 overtime win over the host Atlanta Falcons on Sunday afternoon. He completed 25 of his 34 attempts for 251 yards and three touchdowns and added 24 more yards and two more scores on the ground.

The second of Young’s three touchdown throws ended up in the hands of tight end Tommy Tremble, who reeled in a 12-yard pass on a fourth-and-1 early in the second half. But before the ball even hit those hands, Young had the confidence in Tremble (and in himself) to do this . . .

Young was asked about the Steph Curry-esque celebration after the victory.

“It was definitely not planned,” he replied. “It was just confidence in Tommy. I knew he was open. So when I threw it, I knew he was gonna catch it.”

Head coach Dave Canales, following a disastrous two-game start to the season, decided to bench Young in favor of Andy Dalton. But after a car accident caused a sprained thumb for the 14th-year veteran, Young got his second chance in Week 8—and he never gave it away.

Dating back to his return to the starting lineup, Young has completed 61.8 percent of his throws for 2,104 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions. He paced the Panthers to a relatively respectable 4-6 mark over those 10 outings, which included near-upsets of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Young then talked about being able to finish this emergent season on a high note.

“Just super blessed,” he stated. “All glory goes to God. I’m super grateful to do it with this team. Everyone was so resilient today. Everyone understood we were playing for ourselves.

“Coach talked about finish all week. This was such a great opportunity for us as a team to finish, to go in and just prove what we could do.”

Well, it seems as though Young has certainly proved what he himself can do.

Panthers HC Dave Canales makes emphatic statement on QB Bryce Young after Week 18 win

Panthers HC Dave Canales on QB Bryce Young after Sunday’s overtime win: “We got our guy.”

If it wasn’t already clear that the Carolina Panthers have their guy, it is now.

Quarterback Bryce Young led his Panthers to a 44-38 overtime win over the Atlanta Falcons to close out their 2024 season on Sunday. The second-year passer had himself a career day, throwing for 251 yards and three touchdowns while running for 24 yards and two more scores.

Head coach Dave Canales wasted little time getting to his quarterback during his post-game press conference.

“And how about Bryce?” Canales said to reporters. “Being able to call whatever I wanted to call on the call sheet knowing that he was going to find a positive outcome. He was gonna find a throwaway, a big play, a scramble for a touchdown. Just the different things and how freeing that is just to be able to call whatever fits that area and not have to second-guess the calls—he gave us the ability to do that today.”

Young completed passes to nine different receivers on the afternoon. He spread the end-zone love around as well—finding three different targets (running back Miles Sanders, tight end Tommy Tremble and wide receiver David Moore) on his three touchdown throws.

Canales, who had taken his quarterback decision between Young and Andy Dalton on a week-by-week basis for much of the season, was later asked about the future of the position for the franchise.

“Well, I’d say we’ll take it week to week, but we got no more weeks,” Canales joked. “Yeah, Bryce is our quarterback. I’m so proud of the way that he just took the challenge, and he just grew every week. He just took new lessons, new things applied it to his game, was engaged, challenging the guys, the whole thing.”

He was also asked how important it is to know that his team has their quarterback heading into another important offseason.

“It’s huge,” Canales replied. “It’s a great feeling. It allows us to just look at the whole roster and see what the investments need to be. It helps us to think about free agency and the draft with the lens knowing we got our guy.”

That lens wasn’t clear after the first two weeks of the campaign, when Young was benched following a disastrous start to 2024. But since returning to the lineup in Week 8, he completed 197 of his 319 passing attempts (61.8 percent) for 2,104 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions while leading the Panthers to a 4-6 record.

Panthers set new NFL single-season record for most points allowed

Move over, 1981 Baltimore Colts. The Panthers have made NFL history here in 2024.

Your 2024 Carolina Panthers have made NFL history.

In the fourth quarter of Sunday’s regular-season finale, Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson found the end zone on a 4-yard rush to cut the Carolina’s lead to 38-37. The ensuing extra point from kicker Riley Patterson would knot the game up and stand as the 534th point given up by the Panthers this year—a new single-season record.

The previous record was held by the 1981 Baltimore Colts, who relinquished 533 points over 16 games. Those Colts, while finishing at 2-14, allowed 33.3 points per contest.

Carolina entered Week 18 having allowed 31.0 points per game and 396.3 total yards per game, both the highest marks in the NFL. They were also giving up a league-worst 176.9 rushing yards per game, more than 35 rushing yards than the next closest team (New York Giants, 141.6).

Unfortunately, this historic defensive achievement (if we want to put it that way) put somewhat of a damper on a career day for Panthers quarterback Bryce Young. Young, to the point of that Robinson touchdown, completed 20 of his 26 passing attempts for 195 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 24 yards and two more scores.

Panthers QB Bryce Young pulls out the Steph Curry celebration before throwing a TD

Panthers QB Bryce Young knew he had himself a beautiful touchdown to TE Tommy Tremble before it was even a touchdown.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young may never escape the Steph Curry comparisons.

Young, as he has since reentering the starting lineup in Week 8, is absolutely humming in Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Atlanta Falcons. And the confidence, like his play, his growing—as evidenced by this touchdown pass and Curry-esque celebration on a fourth-and-1 in the third quarter . . .

To that point, Young had completed 14 of his 19 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns—including an earlier 33-yard score to running back Miles Sanders.

The 23-year-old also recorded a 1-yard trip into the end zone in the first quarter, his fifth rushing touchdown of the campaign.
