Arkansas comes out of the holiday break and pens the SEC season with its 1st road game. While being 4-1 away from Bud Walton Arena, all those tilts were at neutral sites. This will be the first test of coach Eric Musselman’s team in a true road environment.

LSU comes into this game with the same 11-1 record but without the hype and fanfare of the Razorbacks. Despite the record, LSU has failed to crack the top 25 this season. A win in this game, and the Tigers could find themselves doing just that next week.

The number is too high for the 1st true road game for the Razorbacks. If you want to add this into a parlay it is a solid addition. But I would refrain from betting it straight.

Both teams have had strong starts to the season and as the SEC portion of the schedule begins, the true abilities of both will be found out.

Arkansas has been a bit more battle tested so far, and Musselman has the Hogs ready to go in this game. LSU is still plagued by ex-coach Will Wade issues and the lack of depth will start to creep into play during conference play. I like Arkansas -4.5 (-105).

Over/Under

BET UNDER 143.5 (-110).

Neither of these teams play games at a high score. Arkansas is 4-8 to the Over this season while LSU is 4-7-1. I do not see this game getting out of hand so I will take Under 143.5 (-110) as my favorite play.

Liberty Bowl: Kansas vs. Arkansas odds, picks and predictions

The Kansas Jayhawks (6-6) and Arkansas Razorbacks (6-6) meet in the Liberty Bowl Wednesday in Memphis. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Kansas vs. Arkansas odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Kansas is back in a bowl for the first time since 2008 when it topped Minnesota in the Insight Bowl with Mark Mangino as coach.

The Jayhawks started out 5-0 SU/ATS, and everything was hunky-dory. ESPN Gameday showed up in Lawrence on Oct. 8 against TCU, and the Jayhawks suffered their 1st loss, 38-31. And since that hot start, the Jayhawks went just 1-6 SU and 2-4-1 ATS in the final 7 games of the regular season.

The good news is that the Jayhawks have just 2 reserve players headed to the transfer portal, so no real notable losses.

Arkansas was nipped 29-27 in the regular-season finale at Mizzou, going just 1-3 SU and 2-2 ATS in the final 4 games of the season. The Razorbacks did score a nice win over a ranked Ole Miss team in Fayetteville, and it had a narrow 13-10 loss against LSU, so nothing to be ashamed about.

QB KJ Jefferson, who passed for 2,361 yards, 22 TD and 4 INT, while also running for 510 yards and 7 TD, will play. He’ll be without WR Jadon Haselwood, the 2nd-leading receiver, as he has elected to opt out.

On defense, LBs Drew Sanders and Bumper Pool also have elected to opt out, which means the team is without its top 2 tacklers. Sanders had 40 total stops, an interception, 10 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery, while Pool was good for 37 total stops, 2 sacks and 3 passes defensed.

There is concern backing ARKANSAS (-140) due to the opt outs, especially on the defensive side of the football. But the truth of the matter is that Jefferson is far and away the best player on either side, and he’ll not only make things happen with his arm, but he is a dual threat who can take it to the house with his feet, too.

Kansas (+120) struggled defensively, allowing 33.8 PPG to rank 120th in the nation, while coughing up 450.8 total yards per game, and 193.8 rushing yards per contest.

Against the spread

ARKANSAS -2.5 (-116) is a strong play, especially since this hasn’t crept higher than a flat 3 yet. Even then, I’d play this all the way up to 4 and still feel more than comfortable.

Kansas +2.5 (-104) closed out the season 1-4 ATS in the final 5 games, and it is just 9-22-1 ATS in the previous 32 games outside of the conference.

Arkansas has plenty of bowl experience, and it is 4-1 ATS in the past 5 bowl games, while going 9-2 ATS in the past 11 games against Big 12 foes.

Over/Under

OVER 69 (-107) is the lean here, as Kansas has an atrocious defense, and Jefferson and the Arkansas offense will be able to move the ball at will.

The Over is 5-1 in the last 6 games overall for KU, while cashing at a 4-1 clip in the last 5 games outside of the Big 12.

And while the Under is 9-1 in the past 10 bowls for Arkansas, hardly any of the players for a majority of that trend are on this current team. More important, Arkansas has cashed the Over in 6 of the last 8 games overall.

ARKANSAS (-130) has been a steamroller so far this season, although this will easily be its biggest test to date. Wins over North Dakota State, Fordham, South Dakota and Louisville is not exactly a murderer’s row. We’ll get a true idea in this 1st real test.

ARKANSAS -1.5 (-110) is worth playing if you like it, unless you’re dead-set on Creighton +1.5 (-110) losing by a single point.

Arkansas is 2-0-1 ATS in the last 3 games overall, including a cover against Louisville in the first game in Maui.

Over/Under

UNDER 143.5 (-110) is the slight lean, but go lightly.

Arkansas has shown tremendous defense during the early going. The Hogs have been suffocating, not only inside the paint, but along the perimeter, too.

The Blue Jays figure to test that defense as Creighton has scored 83.6 PPG during the early going, while hitting at 51.0% from the floor. But this Blue Jays teams struggles from behind the arc, and that will continue here for sure.

The Rebels blew their chance to make it to Atlanta for the 1st SEC title game with their 30-24 loss to Alabama on Saturday, but did cover as 10.5-point underdogs. Ole Miss is in line for a good bowl game for a second season in a row. Last season the 10-2 Rebels went to the Sugar Bowl and that is again a possibility if the team can remain focused and beat Arkansas this week.

Arkansas lost an ugly 13-10 game to LSU Saturday. With QB K.J. Jefferson out, Arkansas was not able to do anything on offense. Of course, LB Harold Perkins of LSU and his 4 sacks and 2 forced fumbles had a lot to do with that also.

This game will be a run heavy game. Jefferson is hoping to be back for Arkansas and his size, 6’5 and 240 pounds, is a tough load to bring down when he runs. On the other side, despite the air raid label, Ole Miss has rushed the ball better than any other team in the SEC in 2022. They will continue to run in this game and can take advantage of an Arkansas defense which has not been good for most of this season.

My feeling is that Ole Miss wins this game and covers the ATS. Therefore, I would rather save the juice and not bet -135 on the Rebels.

Against the spread

BET OLE MISS -2.5 (-110).

The Rebels come into this game mad after blowing the game against Alabama Saturday. Arkansas is not Alabama, and the Rebels will be able to control this matchup against the Razorbacks.

If Jefferson returns for Arkansas, it would give them a big lift. But it is unknown if he will play and how healthy he would be if he does.

This game last season ended 52-51 Ole Miss after Arkansas missed a game winning 2-point conversion. This game will not get to that point, either in score or in closesness of the final score. Ole Miss -2.5 (-110) is my favorite way to play this game.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 64.5 (-112).

A 52-51 final will not happen this year like it did in 2021.

The Rebels offense which was carried by QB Matt Corral in 2021 is now carried by the run game. Ole Miss leads the SEC in rushing, and it will be a focus again this week.

On the other side, with Jefferson iffy to play we saw what the Arkansas offense can do when he is not on the field. Nothing. This game looks to be an Under waiting to happen. This number is so high due to last season’s game and the public perception of the 2 teams. It will not be the same shootout in 2022 and I like Under 64.5 (-112).

LSU (-175) isn’t too terribly priced out of line if you just want to play this game straight up and not worry about the points.

Arkansas has been a thorn in the side of the Tigers over the years, but LSU has won 5 of the last 6 in this series. The Bayou Bengals will be looking for a little revenge, too, after suffering a 16-13 loss on their home field last season. Coach Brian Kelly didn’t experience the sting of that setback, but many of the players certainly remember.

LSU -3.5 (-105) is worth playing, despite the difficult road game.

LB Drew Sanders has been a man on a mission since transferring to Arkansas from Alabama, but the defense still has a long way to go before they are up to the standards needed to compete in the SEC West.

Mississippi State rolls into this game after a 42-24 win against the same Texas A&M team which Arkansas lost to 23-21.

Coach Mike Leach and QB Will Rogers have the Bulldogs offense rolling and this will continue in this game against the Razorbacks. Look for this game to be high scoring on both sides of the ball.

The Bulldogs can score. But they score quickly. So can Arkansas. On top of this, we do not know how good the defense of Mississippi State is. They did just give up 24 to a dreadful Texas A&M offense. This leads you to think the Arkansas offense, which was able to put up 26 on Alabama, can score with them. I would love to see Arkansas win this game, but I will play it safe with the points.

Bet the OVER 58.5 (-120).

Both teams can score. Both teams will score. Of this I am certain. Both defenses leave a lot to be desired. When neither defense is good, take the over. This is my favorite play in the game.
