Alabama Women’s Soccer receives a No. 1 seed in NCAA tournament

No. 1 Alabama women’s soccer hosts first NCAA tournament game Friday

The Alabama Crimson Tide women’s soccer has received a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, and as a result, the team will have its first game in Tuscaloosa.

The Tide will host Jackson State, the winners of the SWAC, who are 11-7-1 on the year at 6 p.m. CST on Friday.

Alabama finishes the year 19-2-1, including a 15-game winning streak that earned the Tide the No. 1 ranking in the country. Alabama lost to the South Carolina Gamecocks in the SEC championship snapping the streak.

South Carolina is the No. 3 team in Alabama’s region along with No. 2 Duke and No. 4 USC. So, there is a chance the Tide and Gamecocks meet again in the Elite Eight.

If Alabama can get past Jackson State on Friday they will face the winner of Arizona State vs. Portland in the second round.

UCLA vs Arizona State Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

Here comes the running game.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson is throwing well, the offense is explosive and balanced, and the defense has stepped up large in key moments. But in this it’s going to be about Zach Charbonnet and the ground attack taking over.

Arizona State’s defense is miserable on third downs and there’s nothing happening whatsoever in the backfield from the line. Thompson-Robinson will have as much time as he needs to work, and the offensive front will dominate.

Arizona State hasn’t been too awful against the run overall, but assume UCLA has 200 yards getting off the bus and controls the game from there.

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Arizona State Will Win

Arizona State can wing it around a bit.

Trenton Bourguet stepped in and saw some time in the win over Washington, and last week against Colorado he ripped off 435 yards and three scores with a slew of big downfield plays.

UCLA’s pass defense isn’t bad, but it’s good for giving up at least 200 yards a game at a minimum. The Sun Devils are going to keep on firing to keep up, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA will be too balanced as the game goes on.

Arizona State will be more than just plucky. It’ll get up early, the passing game will be strong, and it’ll be a big fight for the Bruins for about 40 minutes.

And then the running game will take over, the third down conversions and long drives will be there, and the Pac-12 title hopes will keep marching on.

Arizona State vs Colorado Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

The Sun Devils have played far better over the last few weeks since Herm Edwards was fired.

They were able to shock Washington, they pushed USC a bit, and last week the defense held firm against Stanford until late in the heartbreaking 15-14 loss.

What’s been better? The passing game has been sharper – both Emory Jones and Trenton Bourguet have been hitting their throws – the run defense has been a lot better, and the team has managed to be more competitive.

Colorado is still having massive problems defensively. This is the game for the Sun Devils to get going on the ground and own the tempo.

The Buffs are dead last in the nation in third down stops partly because their second-to-last in college football against the run, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Colorado Will Win

Colorado is far better when it can chill on the turnovers.

It found a way to beat Cal even with three giveaways, and it lost to Oregon State 42-9 partly because of four turnovers. Arizona State’s defense doesn’t force enough mistakes and doesn’t come up with enough big plays.

That’s because the defensive front doesn’t generate any pressure and doesn’t come up with enough plays behind the line.

The run D has to hold up. Arizona State doesn’t pound for a ton of big yards on the ground – it has yet to get past 170 against any FBS team. Colorado has be able to force third-and-longs and get that D off the field.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams are in the midst of awful seasons. Colorado is a little bit worse.

The Sun Devils have major problems against teams that can throw. Colorado will come up with at least 200 yards.

The Buffaloes have major problems against teams that can run. Arizona State will come up with at least 150 yards.

It’ll be a good, competitive game with Colorado putting up a good fight for a half, but the Arizona State offense will start to be more and more effective as the game goes on.

Arizona State vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

Did Arizona State find something two weeks ago in the stunning win over Washington?

It’s been a rough year, but interim head coach Shaun Aguano hasn’t helped step up the passing game, the ground game was okay in the loss to USC and the win over the Huskies, and now the team has had two weeks to take a deep breath and make a big push to come up with something fun over the second half of the season.

The passing game pushed past 320 yards in each of the last two games – Trenton Bourquet stepped in against Washington and went off – but it’s going to take something special to pull this off.

Winning the turnover battle would do that.

Stanford came up with two takeaways in the win over Notre Dame, and the team is still the third-worst in the nation in turnover margin.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Stanford Will Win

Maybe that’s what Stanford really is.

It started the season with a win over Colgate before losing four straight, but those losses came to USC at home, then to Washington and Oregon on the road, and then to Oregon State on a miraculous late play. A good team wins at least one of those, but those were forgivable.

And then came the terrific performance in the 16-14 win at Notre Dame, and now there’s real, live hope to somehow get to six wins.

It starts with keeping the chains moving against an Arizona State defense that’s miserable on third downs. That comes from not having any sort of a pass rush to count on – the Sun Devils are dead last in the nation in sacks and second-worst in tackles for loss.

Stanford QB Tanner McKee didn’t exactly pick Notre Dame apart, but he’s terrific if you give him time.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona State will look like a different, more competitive team over the second half of the season, but Stanford is going to make some noise.

It has to go on the road to UCLA, Utah, and up the road to Cal over the next four games, but first it’ll come up with a strong day on the defensive front and the Cardinal skill parts will have time to operate.

It won’t be gorgeous, but it’ll be a second straight win.

Washington vs Arizona State Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

The Huskies played well against UCLA, but it was too late when everything got rolling in the 40-32 loss.

The passing game hit 300 yards for the fifth straight game and it got interesting late, but the defense was exposed a bit against the first good offense – Michigan State included – it played this year.

Arizona State doesn’t have enough explosion to get the passing attack going like the Bruins did, and the running game hit a wall over the last two weeks.

There’s no pressure whatsoever coming from the Sun Devil defensive front, the offensive line is having a nightmare of a time in pass protection, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Arizona State Will Win

Can Emory Jones and Xazavian Valladay get going again?

UCLA showed it’s possible to run on Washington, and now ASU has to give it a try.

Jones is a dangerous running quarterback who hasn’t been running, Valladay is a strong back who was great with Wyoming and hasn’t been able to get free.

For all the great things Washington is doing, the defense isn’t strong on third downs and the secondary doesn’t take the ball away enough – at least since the opener against Kent State.

The Sun Devils weren’t bad against USC, they hung around for a while, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Can Washington travel? It looked and played well in the first four games in Seattle, but it got going too late in Los Angeles against the Bruins and now it has to be ready for the heat of the late afternoon game in Tempe.

It’ll be fine.

Arizona State has yet to beat an FBS team, and it’s not going to get it done here. Michael Penix Jr. and the Husky passing attack will be sharp right away – he’ll get all the time he needs to work – and there won’t be any of the drama of last week.

It’ll be a decent game in the first half, and then Washington will pull away.

Notre Dame football: Shamrock Series history

Which Shamrock Series game was the best one?

For the 11th time in program history Notre Dame is officially taking a home game to a road location as the [autotag]Shamrock Series[/autotag] is set to take place this Saturday night in Las Vegas as the Irish play “host” to BYU.  As you’re likely aware, Notre Dame has done extremely well all-time in these games going 10-0 to date with really only a couple even being competitive.

Saturday will feature a game against one of the better opponents Notre Dame will have played in this series however with the 3-1 Cougars.

Notre Dame has worn alternate uniforms for the game on nine occasions,  a tradition that wasn’t a part of things when the series began back in 2009.  Here is a quick look back at Notre Dame’s all-time showings in the Shamrock Series.

Analysis of the Colorado head coaching search, while Arizona State considers its own options

Key question: Would any ASU and Colorado coaching candidates overlap and be in play for both schools, not just one? Let’s sort through this situation.

The 2022 college football coaching carousel is already spinning. Last year, USC fired Clay Helton in September. This year, Arizona State fired Herm Edwards in September. Karl Dorrell was just fired in October. That’s two in-season coach firings in the Pac-12, and we’re not even halfway through the season.

If you’re a coaching candidate, do you view the Arizona State job or the Colorado job as the better opening? If you’re the president at ASU or Colorado, you have to think about two big questions, not just one. You’re not just asking yourself about the man you need to hire as your next head coach; you need to wonder if you should allow your current athletic director to make the hire.

There’s plenty to sort through here. Let’s look at the Colorado coaching search and see if the Buffs would consider the same candidates ASU is looking at:

USC vs Arizona State Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

It’s not like everything was going to magically turn around once Herm Edwards was relieved of his duties, but interim head coach Shaun Aguano tried to get the passing game going in the 34-13 loss to Utah and he’s going to turn it all loose against the Trojans.

All things considered, the run defense held up fine against the Utes. The D gave up 465 yards in all, but it played better than it did in the camel-backbreaking straw of a loss to Eastern Michigan.

It’s the other side, though, that has to take over.

The Arizona State running game was stuffed by the Utes, but USC’s defensive front can be hammered on, and this is the game to give it a try.

QB Emory Jones hasn’t been able to get loose, but he can take off when needed to go along with RB Xazavian Valladay as a workhorse.

Run, keep running, and keep that monster of an offense off the field because …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why USC Will Win

Last week just won’t do.

After three weeks we all knew how the new look Trojans were going to roll. The defense was going to be questionable, but it would take the ball away in bunches to make up for it, and the offense was going to score when needed just because it could.

However, the O took its foot off the gas a tad too early on the road against Stanford and couldn’t get going in the wayyyyyyyy to close of a call against Oregon State.

But Caleb Williams and company came through to get out of Corvallis with a 17-14 win, and this week the fun should return against a non-existent Sun Devil run defense and without any semblance of a pass rush to bother the passing attack.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not like the rental ASU coaching staff isn’t going to try bringing the heat.

It won’t work.

The problem will be the inability to force the Trojans into screwing up. They have yet to turn the ball over, lead the nation with a whopping +14 turnover margin, and in this the takeaways will make an already dominant game even more impressive.

Arizona State QB Emory Jones is struggling; USC doesn’t want to give him new reason to believe

Emory Jones is a raw, unpolished talent whose reads and reactions are not making the cut. USC needs to keep Jones indecisive, not giving him clarity or confidence.

Arizona State quarterback Emory Jones hopes to make a splash Saturday night against the USC Trojans. Viewed from ASU’s perspective, Jones will need to be the reason for an upset victory in L.A.

Jones is from the 2018 recruiting class, a four-star prospect from Franklin (Ga.) Heard County. He was the No. 19 player out of the state, the No. 7 dual-threat quarterback in the nation, and the No. 173 overall prospect in the class. He committed to Dan Mullen and the Florida Gators.

The former Florida quarterback played four seasons with the Gators, completing 64.6% of his passes for 3,347 yards and 26 touchdowns to 14 interceptions. He also ran for 1,273 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Jones has faced adversity this season in Tempe with a coaching change and plenty of doubt from Sun Devil fans.

Jones has thrown for three touchdowns and rushed for three on the season, but he is coming off a two-interception performance against Utah in which he took five sacks and was banged up all game.

“Emory is a leader,” senior offensive lineman Des Holmes said, via Sun Devil Source. “And I really appreciated that from Emory, and when you have a guy that’s a leader in your huddle and — he just has a certain type of energy about him. Because I feel like when it comes to this game, and [the quarterback position] specifically, there’s a type of respect and infectiousness and energy and vibe your quarterback has to give off. So I believe Emory embodies that and it’s very easy to follow a captain like that.”

Arizona State is at the bottom of most offensive categories in the Pac-12. The Sun Devils are last in the nation in penalties.

If the Sun Devils want to get back on track, it starts with Jones. Jones can still make big splash plays with his legs and his arm if the offensive line gives him time to create in space. It’s up to USC to not allow him to get into  rhythm.

If Emory Jones does struggle or the game gets out of hand, look for backup quarterback Paul Tyson to get some action.

Tyson, who is the great-grandson of legendary Crimson Tide head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, sat behind Jalen Hurts, Tua Toagovailoa and Mac Jones — all of whom are now starting NFL quarterbacks — as well as reigning Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young during his three years in the SEC.

2022-23 college football coaching tracker

Who else will join the list?

It’s safe to say we may never again see a college football off-season quite like we did following the 2021 season.  Heck, before the conference championship games were even played Lincoln Riley bolted Oklahoma for USC.  I started up a coaching tracker at Fighting Irish Wire shortly after, thinking there was no way Notre Dame would be added to the list but as sure as sure gets, Brian Kelly wound up ditching Notre Dame for LSU seemingly hours later.

Traditional powerhouses such as Florida, Miami, Oregon, and Washington would join the coaching party before in-full, 29 college football FBS programs made changes.

What will 2022 bring?  A couple of coaches who entered the year on very hot seats have already been relieved of their duties and a few more seem like they’re just a matter of time.

Keep up to date all season and off-season long with the 2022-23 college football coaching tracker:
