What you need to know about the Arizona State coaching search after Herm Edwards firing

Get a first look at the important details of the Arizona State job and the Sun Devil coaching situation.

So, the Sun Devils finally did it. They finally fired coach Herm Edwards and brought that sagging, lagging era to a merciful end.

Obviously, USC fans won’t have to worry about Arizona State in two years. The Sun Devils will not join USC in the Big Ten in 2024. However, they’re still in USC’s recruiting footprint. They are in a neighboring state. It is in USC’s interest to see how Arizona State fares as a program. In the unlikely event that ASU gets a rock-star head coach and becomes a powerhouse, that would cut into USC’s recruiting prowess. As is, the Trojans were able to get Eric Gentry in the transfer portal from Arizona State and are poised to get more players from the Sun Devils as long as that program drifts along in a state of irrelevance. ASU remaining mediocre helps USC. The Trojans don’t want the Devils to find a gem.

So, let’s inform you on what to look for in this head coaching search.

REPORT: Herm Edwards fired by Arizona State after embarrassing loss to Eastern Michigan

#USC fans went through this with Clay Helton last September: Why wasn’t the coach fired in the offseason? At any rate, it finally happened with Herm. #ForksUp

The Herm Edwards era is finally over in Tempe. The main question: What took so long?

The decision to fire Edwards was made Sunday afternoon. Sun Devil insider Chris Karpman of Sun Devil Source, the ASU 247Sports site, broke the story, which was later confirmed by Pete Thamel of ESPN and others.

This is a lot like the USC situation a year ago — not in some ways, but certainly in one basic respect: Fans wondered why the coach wasn’t fired at the end of the previous season. The Arizona State program, much like USC after the 2020 season, was going nowhere. The football operation was adrift, the coach did not inspire confidence. Fans were apathetic about the program in its current state. They were not packing the stadium as a point of principle: Why give money to the athletic department when dollars were not being used well?

Everyone could see that a coaching change was necessary, but it wasn’t made in the offseason. Then the new football season started horribly, and after a few weeks, the decision was made. That is a clear parallel with USC and Clay Helton one year ago. This also mirrors what happened at Nebraska with Scott Frost.

We will have much more on this story, since we’re a Pac-12 site for two more years. (Wink, wink.)

Arizona State Sun Devils Preview 2022

This thing can’t get going, and worse yet, it’s taking a step back.

Herm Edwards was a bit of an outside-the-box choice, and he’s been okay with two eight-wins seasons, a seven-win campaign, and that 2-2 2022 season, but last year was when it was supposed to all take off.

Arizona State had the experience, the quarterback, the talent, and the years of rebuilding under Edwards to be a threat to win the Pac-12 title, but the team fell flat far too often in an uneven run.

Issues off the field, big losses to the transfer portal – BIG losses – and with the Pac-12 South looking like it’s about to make a turn up – USC is about to be a thing, Arizona is better, UCLA should be stronger – this is a true make-or-break year.

All that, and the call of Edwards over current Florida head coach Billy Napier is looming larger now.

But it’s not all doom and gloom.

There might have been a wave of players gone to the draft and the transfer portal, but Edwards and ASU were active on the other end. The starting 22 should be good, the schedule is manageable, and the expectations now – compared to last season – aren’t there.

Arizona State Sun Devils Preview 2022: Offense

The offense certainly wasn’t bad – the running game was terrific at times – but the offense only averaged 386 yards and 28 points per game, the passing attack wasn’t explosive enough, and there were times when the whole thing stalled.

QB Jayden Daniels is gone now to LSU, leading rusher Rachaad White is off to the NFL, top receiver Ricky Pearsall and LV Bunkley-Shelton are taking off,  and the best offensive lineman – Kellen Diesch – is gone. However …

The offense will be fine thanks to the transfer portal. Alabama transfer Paul Tyson and Florida transfer Emory Jones might not be Daniels, but they can play – Jones is a veteran who’s been through the big SEC games.

The receiving corps is a concern with all the big losses, but getting Cam Johnson from Vanderbilta helps. As long as the passing game is efficient, all will be fine because …

The running game should be terrific. Losing White and his hard-running style is hardly a plus, but Wyoming transfer Xazavian Valladay is a great talent who should go off. Again, Emory Jones can run – he took off for 759 yards last year for the Gators.

Even with all the changes across the board, the O line will be fine. There isn’t a Diesch, but help from the transfer portal and decent returning options will form a solid group.

Arizona State Sun Devils Preview 2022: Defense

The Sun Devil D balled out. It might not have been a huge season overall, but the defense lived up to the expectations, leading the Pac-12 in total defense and scoring D.

The transfer portal didn’t hit this group as hard as graduation did. However, several key parts are back, the work through the transfer portal might even have upgraded areas – the secondary got a huge boost – and there’s no reason to think the production can’t keep going.

Start in the secondary. The pass defense picked off 16 passes, it was among the best in the Pac-12, and it reloaded at safety with Hawaii transfer Khoury Bethley leading the way, and with help coming in to boost up the corner options.

The front seven might have lost parts – especially on the line – but again, things should be okay with help from the transfer portal. Mississippi State’s Rodney Groce has the potential to break out in the linebacking corps, and Nesta Jade Silvera is a veteran big-body insta-fit for the interior.

Good tackling LB Merlin Robertson only seems like he’s been around since the Frank Kush era, and there are decent pass rushing options with the pressure coming from several spots.

Examining how conference realignment could improve college football

Conference expansion could be best for college football.

College football is quickly changing. With UCLA and USC reportedly moving to the Big Ten conference in 2024, the sport will never be the same. Continue reading “Examining how conference realignment could improve college football”

How the Big 12 could become a third super conference in expansion

The Big 12 has considered adding Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah.

The UCLA Bruins and USC Trojans announced their departure for the Big Ten conference this week. The news came just one summer after Oklahoma and Texas voiced their plans to head to the SEC as late as the 2025 season.

Since the move, the Big 12 appears to be looking to become a third super conference. Not long after announcing a new conference commissioner, the Big 12 is reportedly looking at adding Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah.

While the league would not compare to what the Big Ten and SEC are building, it would present a viable third option to the two powers and include more teams in the future of college football.

The Big 12 has already added teams that could become recruiting strongholds. Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF are based in talent-rich recruiting grounds and have strong support from alumni. A merger between the Big 12 and Pac-12 presents a best-case scenario for teams outside of newly formed super conferences.

2022 NFL draft: Rachaad White scouting report

Everything NFL draft fans need to know about Arizona State running back Rachaad White

A breakout star in the Pac-12 this last season, Arizona’s Rachaad White heads to the next level as one of the most versatile and explosive running back prospects in the 2022 NFL draft.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Sun Devils’ dynamic playmaker:

Former Auburn cornerback Ro Torrence reveals transfer destination

Ro Torrence entered the transfer portal after just one season on the Plains.

Former Auburn cornerback [autotag]Ro Torrence[/autotag] has found his new home, he announced he is transferring to Arizona State Saturday afternoon. He has two more years of eligibility left and is expecting to contend for a starting job with the Sun Devils.

He spent just one season at Auburn before entering the transfer portal during spring practices. The Bessemer, Alabama native started his career at Hutchinson Community College, where he was the NJCAA Defensive Player of the Year and won a national championship.

He appeared in 10 games for Auburn last season, making five tackles, breaking up one pass, and forcing a fumble. His best game of the season came in the Birmingham Bowl when he had three tackles and forced the fumble.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder was expected to provide depth behind Jaylin Simpson and Nehemiah Pritchett. However, A.D. Diamond and D.J. James both spent time with the second-team ahead of Torrence before he entered the portal on March 23.
