The internet swooned over the story of this couple on a second date at the Diamondbacks game

Ahh, young love.

Connor Buckley is a former college soccer player turned esports star. Last night he flipped open Twitter, where he has 42,300ish followers, to ask the Arizona Diamondbacks if they could give him an update on how his roommate’s date was going.

The Diamondbacks, perhaps in a playful mood or perhaps wisely chasing the clout of affiliating with a popular account among the youth, actually obliged.

What happened next is that the blossoming love story of two wonderful young people was interrupted by the intense scrutiny of being put unexpectedly on display, and now we’ll never know what could have been.

Kidding, kidding. They seemed cool with it and the internet got a kick out of it so let’s watch it unfold, shall we?

MLB had a hilarious tweet for Madison Bumgarner’s 7-inning unofficial no-hitter

This performance won’t count in the MLB record books, but at least the jokes were good!

Madison Bumgarner held the Atlanta Braves to no hits through seven complete innings on Sunday, but unfortunately in the eyes of the MLB, it doesn’t officially count as one. The Arizona Diamondbacks shut out the Braves twice on Sunday, holding Atlanta to just one hit on the day, off the backs of Zac Gallen and Bumgarner’s exceptional performances on the mound.

Bumgarner, especially, had a fantastic game, going all seven innings in the second match of the double header while striking out seven batters. Thanks to the MLB’s official rules, Bumgarner won’t get credit for having a complete game no-hitter since it was not a nine-inning game, but the performance was still phenomenal all the same.

Here’s his final out from Sunday’s game, as he got Marcell Ozuna to fly out to right field.

Even though Bumgarner’s no-hitter is unofficial to the MLB, the league on social media did get in on the fun with this great tweet giving the pitcher a gold star for his efforts on Sunday.

The meme is at least a nice consolation prize for Bumgarner, who has not thrown an official nine-inning no-hitter in his MLB pitching career.

Oh well, there’s always next time!

Watch Diamondbacks’ Kole Calhoun adorably fist bump young fan who caught this foul ball

The ultimate sign of respect.

Kole Calhoun missed an easy foul ball on Friday, but it’s one he can’t be mad about. During the Arizona Diamondbacks game against the Atlanta Braves, Calhoun had the chance to record an easy second out on a foul ball from Austin Riley but the ball found another recipient in the stands.

Instead of Calhoun catching the — relatively easy — foul ball in right field, it was a young fan in the stands sitting right in the trajectory of the ball who nabbed it. Calhoun’s reaction, at first in near disbelief that he was beaten to the ball by a kid then turning to amusement as he fist bumped the fan in congratulations, is worth watching this clip multiple times for.

Honestly, the Diamondbacks would do well to sign the kid to a contract given his fielding skills. What a cute, adorable moment.

A goose took over the outfield during the Cubs-Diamondbacks spring training game

That new outfielder can fly.

Spring training baseball is back, which means we’re due for the latest baseball-meets-wildlife encounter.

Now, when it comes to Cactus League baseball in Arizona, those encounters often consist of a bunch of bees interrupting games. But, thankfully, Sunday’s game between the Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks did not involve bees.

It did, however, feature a goose making itself at home in the outfield at Salt River Fields.

Players and coaches on both teams had their eyes focused on center field as a goose settled in on the grass behind Rafael Ortega and basically refused to leave. This goose even defended its territory against another goose.

It was quite the scene.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo was impressed with how much ground that goose could cover, so there was that.

And, of course, there were jokes.

But can you really blame the goose? The weather is great in Arizona this weekend, and a big-league baseball field seems like a decently nice spot for a goose to do goose things. The goose can stay.

Notre Dame Product A.J. Pollock is World Series Champion with Dodgers

For the first time since Brad Lidge with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008, a former Notre Dame player has won a World Series title.

For the first time since Brad Lidge with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008, a former Notre Dame player has won a World Series title. That player is Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder A.J. Pollock, whose team won its first championship since 1988 on Tuesday. Though he had only one double and one walk in seven plate appearances during the Fall Classic, he’ll surely take a ring in his second season in Los Angeles.

Pollock’s seven seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks included an All-Star selection and Gold Glove in 2015. After reaching the playoffs only once during that time, he took his talents to Chavez Ravine for a four-year, $55 million deal beginning in 2019. During the pandemic-shortened regular season, he tied with Mookie Betts for the team lead in home runs with 16. He also posted a slash line of .276/.314/.566 and had 34 RBIs over 55 games.

Congratulations to A.J. for playing a role in making the City of Angels the city of champions in 2020.

Archie Bradley flipped off the Astros from the bullpen after a Diamondbacks home run

One way to send a message.

Aside from the first game of their series against the Dodgers, the Astros haven’t experienced quite the torment that many expected after the offseason’s cheating scandal. Part of it may be the absence of fans this season. Rob Manfred’s insistence on protecting the Astros may also be a factor.

But that doesn’t mean that MLB players have moved on from the Astros’ cheating — not even close. We saw those ill feelings play out during Wednesday night’s game between the Astros and Diamondbacks.

With Nick Ahmed hitting in the fifth inning, the Arizona shortstop drove a 413-foot home run to left-center. But keep an eye on D-backs closer Archie Bradley in the bullpen.

He celebrated the homer by flipping off the Astros players.

And MLB fans noticed the gesture.

That’s one way to send a message, and it doesn’t involve throwing baseballs at each other. So, there’s that.

The Diamondbacks went on to win the game, 14-7. They play Houston again on Thursday.

Prediction

Diamondbacks 6, Padres 4

Moneyline (ML)

Saturday’s line has been skewed by Friday’s lopsided result. The Diamondbacks enter Game 2 as +120 underdogs with the Padres priced as -134 favorites to start 2-0.

Lamet’s home splits in 2019 are rather worrisome and Ray’s K rate should be a big advantage against a young Padres lineup early in the season. The D-Backs recorded seven hits against the Padres’ eight in the series opener, as the majority of the damage came via the seven walks allowed by Arizona pitchers.

Bet the DIAMONDBACKS (+120) to pull even as a solid underdog value.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Diamondbacks to win would return a profit of $12.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The real money will be made on the moneyline for the Diamondbacks, but ARIZONA +1.5 (-189) can also be taken on the run line for a little insurance.

The D-Backs were fourth in baseball with a 90-72 ATS record in 2019, and they were 10-9 ATS against their National League West rivals.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 8 (-110) in a weaker pitching matchup than we had Friday, when the two teams totaled nine runs. Both of Saturday’s starters can get into trouble and aren’t safe bets to go too deep into this game. The D-Backs used four relievers in the opener and San Diego used three.

Esten’s 2020 MLB betting record: 4-2

Prediction

Padres 5, Diamondbacks 4

Moneyline (ML)

The Padres are favored in their season opener at -133, while the D-Backs are +120 underdogs. Paddack dominated Arizona in 2019 and Arizona’s offense was anemic in their tune-up games in Los Angeles. Take the PADRES -133.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on San Diego will win $7.50 in profit.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Arizona was one of the best against the run line in 2019, going 90-72 against the spread. This will be a closely contested game. Bet the DIAMONDBACKS +1.5 (-182).

Over/Under (O/U)

The total is set at 8.5 runs. Arizona’s lineup is improved over last year and averaged five runs per game. Bumgarner will get out of the gate slowly and the D-Backs will rally. Take the OVER 8.5 (-110).
