Diamond Hogs’ annual Fall Classic set for Sept. 15

Arkansas will take the field at Baum-Walker Stadium for the Fall Classic on Sept. 15.

With all eyes again on Omaha in 2024, the Arkansas baseball team will look to begin bouncing back from last season’s disappointing ending in the Fayetteville Regional, as the new roster takes the field in the annual Fall Classic.

The intrasquad scrimmage is set to take place Sept. 15 at 6 p.m., inside Baum-Walker Stadium. Attendance and parking is free for the event, with gates opening at 5 p.m.

The Razorbacks’ fall season officially begins next Friday, Sept. 8, and is scheduled to conclude with the intrasquad best-of-three Fall World Series in late October.

The anticipation for the upcoming season has already began, as Arkansas welcomes one of the nation’s top recruiting classes, as well as some key additions through the transfer portal, adding to an already impressive roster of returners.

Arkansas posted a 43-18 overall record in 2023, winning its fourth overall SEC championship and its second in the last three seasons. The Hogs are the only SEC program and one of just two teams in the country with at least 40 wins in each of the last six full seasons.

Concession stands will be closed for the Fall Classic, but outside food and drinks will be permitted. Coolers will allowed in the Hog Pen only.

Notre Dame alumni sidelined for World Series no-hitter

Big game, but no former Irish played in it.

Game 4 of the 2022 World Series will be remembered forever. After getting six no-hit innings from starting pitcher Cristian Javier, the Houston Astros used three relievers to complete the first combined no-hitter in World Series history and the Fall Classic’s first no-hitter in any form since Don Larsen’s perfect game in 1956. The 5-0 win tied the series at two wins apiece.

Just like Game 3, neither the Astros’ [autotag]Trey Mancini[/autotag], nor the Phillies’ [autotag]Matt Vierling[/autotag] were penciled into their respective teams’ starting lineup. This time, there would be no late-inning substitutions. Both of them rode the pine for the entirety of this historic game. So while there was Notre Dame representation in both dugouts, you won’t see it in the box score.

The good news for Mancini and Vierling is that the Astros’ victory means a Game 6 is guaranteed. The bad news is it’s hard to see either of them suddenly playing a major role in the series’ outcome. Then again, we’ve seen crazier things in baseball.

Notre Dame Product A.J. Pollock is World Series Champion with Dodgers

For the first time since Brad Lidge with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008, a former Notre Dame player has won a World Series title.

For the first time since Brad Lidge with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008, a former Notre Dame player has won a World Series title. That player is Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder A.J. Pollock, whose team won its first championship since 1988 on Tuesday. Though he had only one double and one walk in seven plate appearances during the Fall Classic, he’ll surely take a ring in his second season in Los Angeles.

Pollock’s seven seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks included an All-Star selection and Gold Glove in 2015. After reaching the playoffs only once during that time, he took his talents to Chavez Ravine for a four-year, $55 million deal beginning in 2019. During the pandemic-shortened regular season, he tied with Mookie Betts for the team lead in home runs with 16. He also posted a slash line of .276/.314/.566 and had 34 RBIs over 55 games.

Congratulations to A.J. for playing a role in making the City of Angels the city of champions in 2020.
