Daniel Jeremiah’s final mock draft has Cardinals going with tackle

The pick is Jedrick Wills, not a receiver or top defensive player.

If you have followed the rumors and mock drafts and what they mean for the Arizona Cardinals, it has been a whirlwind of information. However, in NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah’s final mock draft, he has the Cardinals going in perhaps the least exciting direction.

They don’t pick up one of the best defensive players in the draft. They don’t land a big-time wide receiver. They take a tackle.

With the eighth pick in the draft, he has the Cardinals selecting Alabama tackle Jedrick Wills.

I know they need help on defense, but the Cardinals can’t run the offense they want to run until they get better up front.

Wills should immediately make the offensive line better. He is good enough that he could start as a rookie, even with a potentially shortened offseason. Some believe he is capable of playing left tackle, although he has never played the position. Cardinals general manager Steve Keim said Wills can also play guard, which is also a position he hasn’t played.

Wills would fill an immediate need and give Kyler Murray the protection he needs. If they get the development from their young receivers, it isn’t a bad way to go.

Cardinals have met with Appalachian State RB Darrynton Evans

Evans had almost 1,500 rushing yards in 2019 and scored a total of 23 touchdowns for Appalachian State.

We have the name of another NFL draft prospect who has garnered some interest from the Arizona Cardinals. This latest is a running back who is expected to be selected on Day 3 of the draft.

According to Draft Wire’s Justin Melo, the Cardinals are one of many teams to have met with Appalachian State running back Darrynton Evans.

Evans rushed for 1,480 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2019 for the Mountaineers. He also caught 21 passes, scoring another five touchdowns. He measured in at the combine at 5-foot-10 and 203 pounds. He ran the 40 in 4.41 seconds, benched 225 pounds 20 times, had a 37-inchd vertical leap and a 10-5 broad jump.

Projections have Evans going anywhere between late Day 2 to late Day 3 of the draft.

Latest mock draft from SI has Cardinals landing versatile defender

“I talked to a GM Monday night who was strident that he believed the Cardinals love Simmons.”

The trends in mock drafts have shifted a lot for the Arizona Cardinals. First, they were all over the wide receivers. Then, following the DeAndre Hopkins trade, they all shifted to the offensive line. Now it looks like defensive players are the trend.

In the latest mock draft from SI.com’s Albert Breer, he has the Cardinals taking Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons, calling on a trend of picks by general manager Steve Keim.

I talked to a GM Monday night who was strident that he believed the Cardinals love Simmons. And it makes sense, because GM Steve Keim certainly has a “type” of versatile defensive player he looks for (e.g. Tyrann Mathieu, Tony Jefferson, Budda Baker, Haason Reddick, Deone Bucannon). Simmons is all of that.

While Keim loves versatility, not all those players have worked out. Mathieu’s injuries led to his release. Bucannon had one great year and then wasn’t particularly impactful. Reddick has been nothing short of a disappointment.

Simmons is the sort of player with elite athleticism that Keim probably cannot pass up. The real question is whether he will be on the board still when the Cardinals make their pick.

If he is, it likely is a no-brainer.

Cardinals had virtual meeting with Day 3 LB prospect Mykal Walker

For Fresno State, he had 182 total tackles, 6.5 sacks and 22.5 tackles for loss in two seasons.

The Arizona Cardinals could target a linebacker in the NFL draft. In fact, we have a list of names who could be in play with each one of their six selections in the draft this week.

That list does not include this latest name the Cardinals have been in contact with.

According to Draft Wire’s Justin Melo, the Cardinals are one of many teams to have had a virtual meeting with Fresno State linebacker Mykal Walker.

Walker measured in at the NFL combine at 6-3 and 230 pounds. He has pretty good speed, running the 40 in 4.65 seconds. He also had a 33-inch vertical leap, a 10-2 broad jump and 7.09-second three-cone.

Walker began his collegiate career at Azusa Pacific, where he had 102 tackles, 11.5 for a loss as a freshman. He transferred to Fresno State and redshirted 2017.

For Fresno State, he had 182 total tackles, 6.5 sacks and 22.5 tackles for loss in two seasons. He also broke up 10 passes, forced three fumbles and recovered three.

He is expected to be a Day 3 pick and could be in play for the Cardinals in the sixth or seventh rounds.

Boise State DL David Moa could bring ‘4th-and-1 mentality’ to Cardinals

Boise State DL David Moa has interest from the Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals have been in contact with scores of NFL draft prospects. They have needs on the defensive line. One player they have been in contact with multiple times is Boise State defensive lineman David Moa.

He will be a late Day 3 pick or possibly a rookie free agent.

The Cardinals first spoke with him at the Hula Bowl and also has been in contact with him in the last couple of weeks, letting him know he “one of the guys they’re talking about,” Moa told me in an interview this week.

He has also had contact with the Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens.

Moa spent six years at Boise State. He is 6-foot-3 and nearly 300 pounds. He got an extra season after applying for a medical redshirt. He suffered an Achilles injury in 2018 that caused him to lose almost his entire senior year.

His best season was in 2016 as a redshirt sophomore. He earned first-team All-Mountain West honors with 30 tackles, 8.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss.

He played as an undersized nose tackle that season.

“At that time, our nose tackle had transferred to the University of Arizona, so the nose tackle position was open and that was when they threw me in there,” he told me. “Going into the season, I weighed about 265. I just think that not a lot of teams expected my speed at the nose tackle position. It’s definitely what I used the most.”

After that season, he played more 3-technique. In 2017 and 2019, he combined for two sacks and 10 tackles for loss.

He believes he has a trait that sets him apart from others in the draft.

“One thing I do have that I think separates me from some of the defensive tackles in this year’s draft is that 4th-and-1 mentality,” he said. “No team in the nation was put in as many 4th-and-1 situations, and we had the most 4th-and-1 stops. I believe that’s something I have and I know some teams can use that mentality. It doesn’t matter if it’s 1st-and-10 or 3rd-and-12, I’m always going to have that mentality to get things done and do my job the best I can do.”

Coming back for a sixth season, he was named a team captain and earned the moniker “Papa Moa” because of his age and experience. He was a leader on the team.

“They used to have me host recruits,” he said. “My favorite thing was looking at a recruit’s face when I told him what year I came in.”

He is fully recovered from his Achilles tear from 2018. He believes he has the versatility to play “all across the line.”

He believes he has a chance to be drafted as high as the sixth round but where he is drafted doesn’t matter to him as long as he can get a “foot in the door.”

The Cardinals have one pick each in the sixth and seventh rounds. He could be a name that gets called or even among the roughly 18 undrafted free agents the Cardinals sign after the draft.

Cardinals land Derrick Brown, more defensive help in 4-round Draft Wire mock draft

They go with defensive players in three of their four picks in the first four rounds of the draft.

The NFL draft is only two days away and Draft Wire managing editor has a four-round mock draft to digest as the final hours tick away before the actual fun begins.

What does he see happening with the Arizona Cardinals?

With three of the four picks the Cardinals have in the first four round, he has them going with defensive players.

Here are his picks for the Cardinals.

Round 1: Auburn DL Derrick Brown

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The Cardinals do need impact players on the defensive line. They land Brown, who could be a Week 1 starter.

Yes, offensive tackle is a need, and the Cards need to do everything they can to help Kyler Murray succeed. But that also means giving him a strong defense, and this team desperately needs a difference-maker in the middle to replace what they’ve been missing since Calais Campbell’s departure. Brown is a ridiculous athlete for his size, and a disruptive force up front.

Brown is a very safe pick because of the effort with which he plays. He will make an impact on the Cardinals’ run defense. However, the question is whether he will ever be a guy they count on in sub packages. He is a great guy and loves football, but should the Cardinals look for more production with the No. 8 pick?

Team Record: 5-10-1

TEAM NEEDS

Offensive tackle

The Cardinals signed D.J. Humphries to a new three-year deal, solidifying the left tackle spot. However, the right side still needs to be prioritized despite Marcus Gilbert signing to a one-year extension. His past few seasons have been showered with injuries as he’s missed an average of 12 games over the past three seasons.

Defensive line

The Cardinals added Jordan Phillips in free agency, pairing him alongside Corey Peters, Zach Allen. Jonathan Bullard, Trevon Coley, Michael Dogbe, Miles Brown and Lyndon Johnson. However, the talent on the interior part of the defensive line is still thin and could benefit from another premiere defensive tackle. Adding another solid pass-rusher is something needed to get some help for Chandler Jones.

Cornerback

The Cardinals didn’t add any cornerbacks early in free agency. Robert Alford is projected to play outside cornerback opposite Patrick Peterson in 2020, but the veteran broke his leg in training camp and missed the 2019 season, drawing some concern with his durability. Byron Murphy is slotted to play nickel cornerback, so getting inside-out versatility is essential.

TOP TARGETS

Derrick Brown | DT | Auburn

Leki Fotu | DT | Utah

Darrell Taylor | EDGE | Tennessee

Bradlee Anae | EDGE | Utah

Andrew Thomas | OT | Georgia

Matt Peart | OT | UConn

Javaris Davis | CB | Auburn

Cameron Dantzler | CB | Mississippi State

Peter Kings’ mock draft has defensive player falling to Cardinals

See how this mock draft plays out in the first round.

It is draft week which means there will be a few final mock drafts. NBC Sports’ Peter King published his final mock draft and for Arizona Cardinals, there is a surprise.

The Los Angeles Chargers go with an offensive lineman instead of a quarterback or Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons and then the Carolina Panthers select Auburn defensive lineman Derrick Brown. Simmons falls in the Cardinals’ lap.

I’ve never before labeled a player “defensive player.” Simmons has played strong safety, cornerback, slot corner, inside linebacker and outside linebacker, and he’s likely going to be a hybrid safety/linebacker/edge player in the NFL. Could be an instinctive pass-rusher too, which the Cardinals lack in a big way; he had 23 pressures on 70 pass-rushes. Now, the Cards have other needs, and Simmons doesn’t have a singular position. But he was a great and instinctive college player.

I believe GM Steve Keim just might look at this pick and remember the 2007 draft. Keim, the director of college scouting in Arizona at the time, reportedly wanted Adrian Peterson when the Cards picked at number five in the first round. But the Arizona pick ended up being a tackle, Levi Brown, and Peterson came off the board two slots later, to Minnesota. Brown was an abject disaster with Arizona. Peterson is, well, the best back of the past 15 years. I’ve always seen Keim as a pick-the-best-player guy. And with the multiple defensive gifts of Simmons, he’d qualify as that if there at eight.

The Cardinals could go with Simmons, one of the two remaining top tackles in Jedrick Wills or Mekhi Becton, or they could go with a receiver.

Given the choices, Simmons would probably be the selection.

He would have an interesting role on the Cardinals defense. He has no real place in the starting lineup, except maybe at safety to start over Jalen Thompson. However, he still could get playing time and would actually be best suited that way, at least as a rookie because he could play some off the edge as a pass rusher. He could come in and play in the box, blitz from the inside or line up and cover. He could, in a part-time role, do what he did at Clemson while the Cardinals figure out the best way to utilize him on the field in 2021.

Selecting Simmons would mean having to address the offensive line and receiver later on in the draft without a second-round pick, but to get an impact player like Simmons would make it worth it.

How will RB David Johnson joining the Texans affect fantasy football in 2020?

Running back David Johnson joining the Houston Texans improves his stock value in fantasy football for 2020.

It was just a short time ago Houston Texans running back David Johnson was all the hype in the fantasy football community.

In the 2017 offseason, after Johnson tallied 2,110 scrimmage yards and 20 total touchdowns in 2016 to earn his only All-Pro to date, the former 2015 third-round pick from Northern Iowa was slated to go No. 1 overall in many a fantasy football draft.

Now, not so much.

Johnson has since rushed for 1,308 yards and scored a total of nine touchdowns. This is in large part because the former Arizona Cardinal has battle availability issues ranging from staying healthy to being phased out of coach Kliff Kingsbury’s offense.

With a fresh start with a new team and a new coach, Johnson is looking to reboot his career. Not only would his career be back on track at 28 years old, but his fantasy football value would be primed for a renaissance as well.

Last season Texans running back Carlos Hyde rushed for 1,070 yards for the first time in his six-year career. While Hyde is not as an elite player in terms of the speed and skill sets that Johnson possesses, it still says a lot about the scheme the Texans and coach Bill O’Brien ran in 2019.

Johnson’s fantasy outlook should be equal if not greater than Hyde’s. With better speed and pass-catching abilities than Hyde there is no reason Johnson shouldn’t have over 1,000 rushing yards and north of 500 receiving yards this season.

Johnson isn’t going to command the same No. 1 overall spot that he did in fantasy football drafts three years ago. However, he is a good candidate for a sleeper who becomes a sure RB1 in people’s lineups throughout the season. And unlike the Cardinals, Johnson will also play in an offense with a quarterback in Deshaun Watson that will help take the pressure off the running back so he can be one of many weapons as opposed to the lone artillery in the offense.
