All of Ohio State football’s historical, unanimous First Team All-Americans

The Ohio State football program has had a slew of unanimous First-Team All-Americans. Here is a chronological list of all of them by year.

It’s a select group. Every once in a while a player comes along in the Ohio State football program that makes it as a unanimous First-Team All-American. To do it, a player must be named First-Team by the Associated Press, AFCA, FWAA, The Sporting News, and Walter Camp. That’s right, all of them.

The Buckeyes are near the top when it comes to a historical number of players making it as a unanimous First-Team All-American, third behind just Alabama and Notre Dame. All told, OSU has had a unanimous All-American a whopping 33 times, just one behind Notre Dame, and six behind the Crimson Tide. Arch rival Michigan has 25 unanimous selections total.

So who are they? Here is a complete historical list of all the unanimous First-Team All-Americans at Ohio State by era.

Every Ohio State football player in the College Football Hall of Fame

Ohio State has some of the most iconic players in college football history. Here is a list of Buckeyes in the College Football Hall of Fame.

It’s the pinnacle of any sports career — making it into the Hall of Fame. With Ohio State being one of the best college programs of all time, you can bet that the Buckeyes have had their fair share of players and coaches that have been enshrined in Atlanta.

With the news of the latest College Football Hall of Fame ballot including former OSU players James Laurinaitis and Mike Doss, we thought it’d be fun to take a walk down memory lane and remember all the former Ohio State players that can already be referred to as HOF members.

Get ready, because there is a bunch of them — 24 to be exact. And while that pales in comparison to Notre Dame’s 44, it is still the fourth most of any program in the history of the sport. The other two ahead of the Buckeyes besides the Irish? USC is second with 30, and yes — Michigan — is third with 25 players having been inducted.

Here are all 23 players that wore the scarlet and gray and eventually made their way to the College Football Hall of Fame.

Over the last few decades, Wisconsin football has built a legacy of excellence at the running back position and has produced some of the best running backs in college football history. Five of these outstanding backs are represented in the 10 in career rushing yards in Big Ten Conference history.

Although the top 10 in career rushing yards in Big Ten history features five Wisconsin running backs, there are numerous other dominant players including legends like Michigan State’s Lorenzo White, Ohio State‘s Archie Griffin and Indiana’s Anthony Thompson.

This list includes several Heisman winners as well as numerous Doak Walker Award winners and represents some of the very best in not only the history of the Big Ten but in college football.

Reflecting on all of Ohio State football’s Heisman winners through the years

Ohio State football is tied with Notre Dame and Oklahoma for the most historical Heisman winners. We reflect on all seven.

If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it more times than Michigan fans would like to hear. There aren’t too many programs that can hold a candle to the beast known as Ohio State football.

From all-time wins (second), all-time winning percentage (first), players drafted into the NFL (third), and NFL draft first-rounders (first), there’s not too many teams that can measure up.

One of those things the Buckeye program can also boast about is its historical place in churning out Heisman winners. In fact, no other program has won more bronze statues than the one sitting on the banks of the Olentangy. All in all, Ohio State has taken home seven total Heisman trophies and we’re here to reflect on all of those for you.

We’re going down this journey because the Buckeyes have what might be the leading candidate for the award once again in 2020, none other than Justin Fields. Right now, only Notre Dame and Oklahoma sit atop the list in a tie with OSU for the most trophies, and if the Buckeye gunslinger wins it this time around, it’ll be pretty lonely at the top. Just like it should be.

Here is a look at all seven seasons in which an Ohio State player has won the Heisman trophy.

Forgive us for the ones we simply couldn’t or don’t have the ability to post photos of because of the age.

First up … He put Ohio State football on the map

Archie Griffin selected as the No. 4 all-time player in college football history by ESPN

ESPN recognized former Ohio State running back and legend Archie Griffin as the fourth-best college football player of all-time.

There’s only one college football player that’s won the Heisman Trophy twice, and he’s a former Ohio State player. Of course you know the answer to that trivia question — Archie Griffin, No. 45 who played his entire career under Woody Hayes in Columbus.

Being that he’s the only college player to accomplish that feat, you’d think that he’d be pretty high up any list of greatest of all-time. Sure enough, ESPN has named Griffin the fourth-best college football player in the 150-year history of the game.

The top 11 of all-time was unveiled during halftime of the national championship game between LSU and Clemson. And you had to have a chill watching Griffin take his place among greats like Red Grange, Herschel Walker, Barry Sanders, and Jim Brown on the podium.

Here’s a look at Griffin along with the others recognized tonight as some of the best of the best in college football lore.

But here’s what a lot of folks don’t know; Griffin is an even better person than he was player. He will always be cemented as one of the best to ever play the game.

Here are the rest of the eleven that also took center stage tonight.

At least four Buckeyes named finalists for College Football Awards

Four Ohio State Buckeyes have been named finalists for major college football awards to be handed out in a few weeks.

Four members of the Ohio State football team have been named as finalists for a total of five major college football awards this year. Chase Young, even with his two-game suspension, is a finalist for both the Chuck Bednarik Award (best defensive player) and the Maxwell Award (best overall player).

Three other Buckeyes are finalists for their respective awards. Justin Fields is one of the three finalists for the Davey O’Brien Award for best quarterback. Former Buckeye Joe Burrow is another, along with Jalen Hurts.

Jeff Okudah is a finalist for the Jim Thorpe award for the best defensive back, while J.K. Dobbins is up for the Doak Walker Award for best running back.

A lot can still happen in the final two weeks, but Young will most likely win the Bednarik Award. Burrow will probably win the Davey O’Brien Award, and Chuba Hubbard of Oklahoma State seems to be the favorite for the Doak Walker Award.

There will, of course, be plenty more awards and trophies given out at the end of the season–including the Heisman Trophy. The nine pictured in the tweet above above are some of the biggest. The last Buckeye to win one of these awards was when Malcolm Jenkins won the Jim Thorpe Award in 2008. (Pat Elflein and Billy Price did win the Dave Rimington Trophy for best center in 2016 and 2017, though.)

The last time the Buckeyes won more than one of these awards was in 1995, when Eddie George won the Doak Walker and Maxwell Awards, while Terry Glenn earned the Biletnikoff. Winning three might be tough this year, but the Buckeyes should take multiple pieces of hardware home in a few weeks.
