Caleb Williams sent a simple message to Heisman legend Archie Griffin

Only one man has ever won the Heisman Trophy twice. Caleb Williams will have a chance to become the second man in college football history to win the stiff-arm trophy a second time.

At the 2022 Heisman ceremony in New York, Caleb Williams said something very simple to Archie Griffin of Ohio State, who captured the award in 1974 and 1975:

“I’ll be back. See you soon.”

That’s what Williams said he told Griffin when interviewed by Ted Robinson and Yogi Roth of Pac-12 Network during the broadcast of USC football’s spring game on Saturday in the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Caleb led a three-play opening touchdown drive for USC, and then took the rest of the day off. This day belonged to Miller Moss and Malachi Nelson, Caleb’s backups. They needed the live reps. Caleb is fully ready for the season, a journey in which he will try to make college football history and join Griffin on the Heisman mountaintop.

Archie Griffin played against USC in multiple Rose Bowl games. Trojan fans know him well. Caleb Williams would love to join Griffin in Heisman history, but what matters most is to reach the College Football Playoff semifinals and, at the very least, capture the Pac-12 title before moving to the Big Ten (Griffin’s conference) next year.

Watch: Ohio State legend Archie Griffin scores touchdown in spring game

The Buckeye legend scores again! #GoBucks

The only two-time Heisman Trophy winner hails from [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag], legend [autotag]Archie Griffin[/autotag].

The College Football Hall of Famer who was the former president and CEO of OSU’s alumni association received a unique opportunity during the Scarlet and Gray game: carrying the ball.

Griffin took a handoff and went down the right sideline and ended up scoring a touchdown for the Scarlet squad. The points counted and a large contingent of current Buckeyes went over to congratulate the legend.

It was a special moment for Griffin and the Buckeyes as they honored him during the spring game. Check out his touchdown run below.

Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud believes he could have won two Heisman Trophies

We all will wonder what could have been. #GoBucks

There weren’t too many blemishes on Ohio State quarterback [autotag]C.J. Stroud[/autotag]’s résumé during his two starting seasons for the Buckeyes. Many will look back and say his two losses to Michigan were enough to write his story.

What if Ohio State had won those two games? Stroud thinks if he could have led his team to victories in the final games of the regular season, Buckeye legend [autotag]Archie Griffin[/autotag] would have had some company.

Today, Stroud told reporters at the [autotag]NFL combine[/autotag] that if he had defeated our rivals, he very well could have won two Heisman Trophies and joined Griffin as the only player to win the prestigious award twice.

Stroud very well could be right, but that is obviously not how each of the last two seasons ended. His numbers stack up with his competition in both years and the rivalry win could have put him over the edge with voters each time. Unfortunately, we are stuck playing the what-if game.

Ohio State football’s top 10 most unbreakable offensive records

What would you name as the most unbreakable Ohio State football record on the offensive side of the ball? #GoBucks

  1. Ohio State football. It’s on the shortlist of the greatest college programs of all time. Look up historical stats and records when it comes to team and individual awards, and the one draped in scarlet and gray can be found anywhere and everywhere in the game.

But what about when we examine the OSU football program against itself? There are many records etched into the program’s history. Some seem pretty achievable, while others have stood the test of time and seem as if they may never be broken, especially with the style of play shifting to a more wide-open game.

We decided to go through the Ohio State football record books and ranked the top 10 most unbreakable offensive records on the banks of the Olentangy.

Here is our list of the top 10 most unbreakable Ohio State football records from the offensive side of the ball.

Who’s more likely to win the Heisman: Bryce Young or Will Anderson?

Which Alabama player is most likely to win the Heisman in 2022?

The Heisman trophy is the greatest award that a college football player can achieve. This year Alabama Football’s [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag] and [autotag]Will Anderson[/autotag] will both be in the conversation for this prestigious award. However, for either of them to win would be historic in their own way.

Young would be only the second player in the history of the award to win it in back-to-back years, Archie Griffin of Ohio State won them in 1974 and 1975. Alabama will be prime contenders for the national title this year, and with an arsenal of offensive weapons surrounding him, Young will be breaking records along the way.

On the other hand, Anderson could be the first defensive player to win the award since Charles Woodson of Michigan did in 1997. Woodson is the only primarily defensive player to have ever won the award as well. During Anderson’s sophomore campaign, he won the SEC Defensive Player of the Year award and lead the nation in sacks (17.5) and tackles for loss (34.5).

Both players are set to have record-breaking years, but I think Bryce Young is more likely to repeat and win the award than Will Anderson is. Anderson would probably have to break the NCAA sack record or something heroic like that for serious contention, while Young needs to repeat what he has already done.

Who do you think is going to take home the Heisman trophy this season?

Ohio State football face of the position: Running Back

When you think of the running back position at Ohio State historically, which player comes to mind? Vote! #GoBucks

It’s the doldrums of almost summer and you are most likely stuck between queueing up last year’s Rose Bowl victory over Utah on the DVR for the umpteenth time, reading rankings and listicles that include Ohio State, and yearning for the start of the college football season.

Sounds like a perfect time to kick off a series we are embarking upon here at Buckeyes Wire. We call it the “face of the position” and it’s really exactly as it sounds. When you think of a position group at Ohio State, who do you think of? From quarterback to linebacker, to placekicker and beyond, OSU has some of the most iconic and historical college football players that have taken their place among the best in the game.

However, one player stands out above all else when you shroud them behind the colors of scarlet and gray, and that’s where we are going to ask for your assistance.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be highlighting players that are in the running for the face of a position at Ohio State and asking for your vote in a Twitter poll to have one player identified as the one you think immediately at that position.

We’ve already looked at the quarterback position, and now we’re moving on to running back. It’s a position that’s often been considered the Cadillac group in the history of Ohio State.

We’ll keep voting up for five days, and at the end of it, we’ll reveal the winner of each. Make sure you scroll to the bottom to cast your vote from the nominees and write in a candidate if you think of another player.

ESPN lists five Ohio State running backs in its top 100 of the last 60 years

Can you guess the five that made it? #GoBucks

The running back position used to be the so-called glamour position of college football. And while that has exponentially switched to the quarterback position over the last couple of decades, some of the all-time greatest names in the history of the game did their damage on the ground toting the rock.

At Ohio State, the running back position is littered with guys that were some of the best of the best in the game historically. As such, you would expect any list that comes out targeting the best running backs the game has seen to have a few wearing scarlet and gray — right?

Well yes, it seems. In fact, ESPN recently published a list of the top 100 running backs over the last 60 years (subscription required), and Ohio State had five former players appearing. We’re going to go through them for you here to get discussion and debate going.

Let’s start it off with the guys later in the list and work our way towards the top.

Archie Griffin’s grandson set to walk-on at Ohio State

Another Griffin will be headed to Ohio State to play football. #GoBucks

The only two-time Heisman winner’s grandson is set to join the Ohio State football program as a preferred walk-on.

Lima (OH) senior defensive back Diante Griffin announced his agreement to accept the offer from OSU via his Twitter account on Sunday. You know the last name of course. He is the grandson of the legendary legacy college football icon Archie Griffin and son of Andre who played running back at Ohio State from 1998-2001.

“First and foremost, I would like to thank God for putting me in the position that I am in today,” Griffin said in a statement released on Twitter. “I want to thank all of my coaches and teammates, throughout all sports, for all of the hours and work that we have put in.

“Most of all, I want to thank my family for their everlasting and second to none love and support I receive daily. My brother is who I do it for, my mother is my biggest supporter and critic and my father is who taught me everything I know. I love this game of football very much and I’m extremely blessed to continue that love on the next level.

“My Dad, my Papa Dave, my Papa Archie and my Uncle Adam have all been my biggest inspirations when it comes to this game and they all have this one thing in common. With that being said I am blessed and excited to announce that for these next years of my life, I will be accepting a walk-on opportunity to continue my academic and athletic career at The Ohio State University.”

The Griffins have been a staple at Ohio State for years. From Archie and his brothers Ray and Duncan, to Archie’s sons Andre and Adam, to his nephew Kevin, it seems like there’s always a Griffin either on the sidelines in Columbus or walking the banks of the Olentangy getting ready to join the fray.

Congrats to a legacy prospect for keeping the family name in the program. We’ll be watching to see how things go for Diante.

WATCH: Archie Griffin reveals the record he’s most proud of from his career at Ohio State

Can you guess what record Archie Griffin is most proud of during his time at Ohio State?

If you were trying to identify a face of the Ohio State football program from a historical perspective, there’s a certain two-time Heisman winner that would be on the shortlist of shortlists. That, of course, is former running back Archie Griffin who is still around today as an all-time ambassador for OSU.

The accolades were plenty. Besides the two bronze statues, Griffin’s teams did a lot of winning on the field as well, with four Big Ten titles, four Rose Bowls, and a 40-5-1 overall record during that time.

If you know anything about the Columbus native, it’s that he’s a team guy who is quick to direct praise from himself to others, and that’s exactly what he did when appearing in an interview with the Big Ten Network over the weekend.

With all of those records, stats, and awards, many might wonder what Griffin is the proudest of. Good thing then that Dave Revsine asked the Buckeye great that very question. Turns out, he’s most proud of his 31-straight 100-yard rushing games, but not for the reason you’d think. Griffin mentioned it’s a model of consistency, but he’s more proud of it because it speaks volumes for how talented the guys blocking for him were during that time.

Yep. There’s no surprise there. Always the gentlemen, and always humble and caring, there aren’t too many others as kind and thoughtful as the only guy to ever win the most prestigious individual award in all of sports.

History of Heisman Trophy winners at Ohio State

Remembering the seven Heisman Trophies an Ohio State player has taken home. #GoBucks

There are few programs that have the history Ohio State football has when it comes to Heisman Trophy winners. In fact, the Buckeyes are tied for first with seven Heisman Trophies. They join Oklahoma and Notre Dame. OSU also has the only two-time Heisman winner, running back Archie Griffin.

That’s before we even go down the path of how many Buckeye players have been invited to New York as a finalist.

With the latest Heisman on the doorstep of being awarded this weekend, and with Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud one of four finalists included in all the fun in New York, we thought we’d remind you about the seven times OSU took home arguably the greatest individual award in all of American sports.

Here are the seven times (and counting) an Ohio State player has won the Heisman Trophy along with career stats thanks to OhioStateBuckeyes.com.
