As for the rest of the Big 12, two other teams made the top 25. Oklahoma (No. 3) is the highest-ranked conference team and Oklahoma State (No. 11) also makes a major jump. Iowa State drops out of the poll after losing at home to Louisiana.

For the first time, no Big Ten or Pac-12 teams were in the poll. Both conferences have postponed their seasons, possibly coming back in the spring. Four teams ranked ahead of Texas in the preseason poll are now unranked.

Is Auburn overrated in the preseason AP Top 25 rankings? CBS Sports thinks so

CBS Sports thinks the Tigers are overrated at No. 11 in the preseason AP poll.

Preseason polls, whether you love them or hate them, have officially arrived. This year’s preseason AP Top 25 poll ranks the Auburn Tigers at No. 11 and Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports dislikes this.

Why? Because Fornelli once declared Texas A&M as overrated going into this football season, but then he contradicted himself by telling the world that Texas A&M is actually a darkhorse this upcoming season.

So now he’s here to make things right.

Before I finish typing this I have to laugh. Here is the only reason Fornelli cites why he believes Auburn is overrated:

He has more faith in Kellen Mond than Bo Nix.

Nix’s accuracy throwing the ball last season was a real concern to me, and I’m not sure those problems can get ironed out over an unusual offseason that did not include spring practice. Chad Morris is taking over the offense, and while Morris is a creative thinker who knows how to use his personnel, he’s also a coach who likes to throw the ball.

With all due respect to Kellen Mond, this is a lazy comparison that should not even be made. The lack of practice is a concern, but that affects everybody.

Hey Tom, look up Seth Williams, Anthony Schwartz, Eli Stove, Caylin Newton, JJ Pegues, and John Samuel Shenker.

Come back to us then.

Six Big Ten teams make first AP Top-25 of the 2020 College Football season

There were six Big Ten teams featured in the first AP Poll of the 2020 college football season. Michigan State was not one of those.

[jwplayer FAgnJF5e]

The Big Ten has officially postponed their season, but many fans of Big Ten schools who were projected to have big football seasons will still need to endure some more heartbreak as the first AP Top-25 ranking of the 2020 college football season dropped on Monday and six Big Ten schools were featured. For those wondering, Michigan State was not on the list..

The Big Ten teams who made the Top-25 were:

  • No. 2 Ohio State
  • No. 7 Penn State
  • No. 12 Wisconsin
  • No. 16 Michigan
  • No. 19 Minnesota
  • No. 24 Iowa

Ohio State was one of the heavy favorites to win the National Championship, which is a big reason why their fans and players were so adamant about wanting to play, and not postpone, the 2020 season. Buckeyes starting QB Justin Fields was one of the most vocal players in the country about the decision, even going so far as to start a petition to reinstate the season.

2020 AP Top 25 Poll

3. The AP Poll ranked teams that aren’t playing

It’s going to be the year the AP ranked teams that aren’t doing the whole college football thing.

The AP voters got their rankings in before the Big Ten and Pac-12 decided to postpone their respective seasons, but unlike the Coaches Poll that came out before the conferences went dark, the AP didn’t release its top 25 until a few weeks after.

There was time to adjust.

It’s just not that hard to take the rankings as created by the voters and take out the teams that aren’t playing a 2020 fall season. It took me less than ten minutes to come up with the revised rankings.

If teams aren’t actually playing college football, then what’s the point of putting them in a ranking for a season? The Kansas City Chiefs are playing just as much college football in the fall of 2020 as Ohio State and Oregon are.

This was an easy way for the AP Top 25 Poll to shine a light on programs that normally would struggle to get close to the preseason top 25.

Appalachian State and Memphis would’ve been in. How much would it have mattered to a place like Arizona State, or Louisville, or Kentucky to make a preseason top 25 of teams actually playing?

And now what do you do? What, you honored Ohio State by giving it a preseason No. 2 ranking? All that does is mock the fan base with the Christmas present they don’t get to open.

But there’s a reason for all of this …

Maybe the AP has this right. Maybe there won’t be a season after all, all the teams will cancel before it all gets going, and the preseason top 25 is a representative snapshot of what the season was supposed to be like.

Just call it an awkward moment in this year when everyone is trying to adjust on the fly.

NEXT: Who is, technically, overrated in the AP Top 25 Poll?

Texas named sleeper team who can make College Football Playoff

Five teams have made the CFP after beginning the season outside the top 10. 247Sports believes Texas can be the next team to do so.

Since the College Football Playoff was introduced in 2014, five teams who ranked outside the preseason AP top 10 made the final four. The 2019 playoff ended a four-year streak, with LSU, Clemson, Ohio State, and Oklahoma all ranking within the top six.

Texas will be looking to revive that streak, beginning the 2020 season outside of the top 10, coming in at No. 14.

Related: AP Poll: Texas lands at No. 14 in preseason rankings

247Sports believes the Longhorns can do just that, naming them as one of the outside top 10 teams that are capable of crashing the CFB Playoff. They laid out criteria to qualify and Texas met all five.

New (or newish) coaches, strong quarterback play, an easy(ish) schedule, offensive, defensive balance, close wins, and luck.

NO. 14 TEXAS LONGHORNS

No lack of new coaches here. Tom Herman replaced his offensive AND defensive coordinator this offseason, bringing in Mike Yurcich from Ohio State and Chris Ash from Rutgers. With four-year starter Sam Ehlinger under center, the offense should be plenty productive. Texas needs a defense that finished 98th last season in yards allowed per play to make a leap. Ash will bring in a 4-3 scheme that fits the roster’s personnel better, and there are some pieces (Joseph Ossai, Caden Sterns) that are legitimate stars. With a little injury luck – Texas was missing five starters midway through the season – and improved play from the secondary, it’s easy to envision the defense taking a major leap.

The schedule does stack up well for the Longhorns. They shed LSU from their non-conference schedule and will catch Oklahoma early in the year when suspensions and injuries might still be an issue.

A lot will need to go right – A LOT – but this Texas team has the bones of a playoff contender if the pieces fall into place.

When the Big 12 released their revised 2020 schedule, the Longhorns’ conference season got easier. Mainly because there are be no back to back away games on the calendar. Texas will play at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium every other week.

Related: Texas Football: Seven thoughts on Longhorns’ revised 2020 schedule

The biggest two obstacles of the season will come from the state of Oklahoma. Of course, the annual Red River Shootout is always a toss-up between the Longhorns and Sooners. This year’s game will be worth more than usual as both teams will be ranked inside of the top 10, barring an early slip-up.

Oklahoma State will poise the second real hurdle for Texas when they travel to Stillwater on Halloween. The Cowboys were predicted to finish second in the Big 12 preseason media poll. The Longhorns have poor recent history on the road against Oklahoma State, losing their last two games.

As 247Sports says, “a lot will need to go right,” in order for Texas to make its first-ever College Football Playoff.

With the leadership of Sam Ehlinger and the renovation of the defense with Chris Ash, this is the best chance Tom Herman has had in his four years.

AP Poll Top 25 Poll: What It Should Be Without Big Ten, Pac-12

With the Big Ten and Pac-12 canceling/postponing their respective seasons, what should the AP be now?

With the Big Ten and Pac-12 canceling/postponing their respective seasons, what should the AP be now?

For some reason, the AP wasn’t able to adjust and do its preseason rankings correctly – it included teams that aren’t even playing this year.

Here’s what it should be, based on schools still expected to play college football in 2020.
