Iowa Hawkeyes up to No. 21 in AP Top 25 College Football Poll

The Iowa Hawkeyes have moved up to No. 21 in the Week 2 version of the AP Top 25 College Football Poll.

Another Week 2 poll, another Week 2 climb for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Just as they sit in both the ESPN College Football power rankings and the US LBM Coaches Poll, the Iowa Hawkeyes are No. 21 in the most recent AP Top 25 College Football Poll.

The Hawkeyes’ 40-0 showing against Illinois State in Week 1 is enough to jolt them up four spots in the polls. It is the third-largest jump of any team ranked in the Week 2 AP Top 25.

The top five of the AP features No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Alabama and No. 5 Notre Dame. Rounding out the top 25 behind Iowa are No. 22 Louisville, No. 23 Georgia Tech, No. 24 North Carolina State, and No. 25 Clemson, who slid a poll-worst 11 spots after suffering a blowout loss at the hands of Georgia.

The Big Ten is represented well in this week’s poll with Ohio State at No. 2, Oregon at No. 7, Penn State at No. 8, Michigan at No. 10, USC at No. 13 and Iowa at No. 21.

Iowa’s upcoming opponent, the Iowa State Cyclones, are receiving votes in this week’s poll, just as they did in the US LBM Coaches Poll.

A win against the Cyclones this weekend could be enough to push the Hawkeyes near the top 15 if they handle business in a dominant fashion. A win in any fashion should send the Hawkeyes inside the top 20 teams.

Iowa kicks off Week 2 inside Kinnick Stadium at 2:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Sept. 7 against the Iowa State Cyclones in the Cy-Hawk Rivalry.

You won’t believe where Brett McMurphy ranked Ohio State in his AP Top 25 ballot after Week 10

One of the things we like to follow on this Ohio State homer site is where polls and analysts rank the Buckeyes after the latest results on the college football field each week.

We are obviously closely tied to the US LBM Coaches Poll with it being USA TODAY affiliated and all, but we also take a peek from time-to-time at the AP Top 25 poll, what Fox analyst Joel Klatt says, what Kirk Herbstreit thinks, and yes, even more when it makes sense.

Well, there’s one we couldn’t pass up this week and it’s from an old friend of Buckeye Nation. Brett McMurphy has some history with Ohio State fans (that we will not get into here), and it’s not a love affair, but one that many Buckeye fans cringe at.

However, he is an AP poll voter, and he just let everyone know how he voted in the poll after Week 10. You might be very, very surprised where he ranked OSU.

McMurphy actually believes Ohio State is the … wait for it … No. 1 team in the country. What? Yes, that’s right. The guy that has thrown several haymakers to the OSU program over the years has the Buckeyes at No. 1 followed by Georgia, Florida State, Michigan, Washington, Oregon, Texas, Alabama, Ole Miss and Penn State in his top 10.

Here’s a little Buckeye high-five to McMurphy for ranking the Wolverines at No. 4 as well. Maybe, just maybe, there’s hope for this world we live in when we see things like this, eh?

Ohio State football checks in near the top of preseason AP poll

Last week we gained our first look at the 2023 USA TODAY Sports AFCA preseason Coaches Poll, and Ohio State landed in a bit of a surprising spot.

On Monday, the Associated Press preseason college football poll was  released, and the Buckeyes landed about where you would expect, among the top three in the country.

OSU is replacing its starting quarterback and three offensive linemen, but  depth and talent abounds across the rest of the roster with a more veteran defense, and skill position players to burn at wide receiver and running back. So, as there is with any season, there are question marks, but the players are on hand to hopefully provide some answers.

Here’s a look at the top 10 of the preseason AP Top 25 that is dominated by the same programs: Georgia, Alabama, Clemson, and Michigan.

The AP rankings have been a part of the fabric of college football since 1936.

So, according to the final AP rankings, how do the programs rank all-time, by decade, and by era? Which ones were the best over the second half of the 1930s?

Here’s the drill. Take all the AP final rankings and use our CFN scoring system – it’s not hard. The AP national champion gets 25 points, the No. 2 team 24, No. 3 23, and so on down to the bottom.

Interestingly enough, Notre Dame didn’t win a national title over the four years the AP ranked teams in the 1930s, but it managed to come out on top of the rankings to be the team of the decade.

Michigan only won one AP national championship in the 1940s – Notre Dame won four, Army two, and Minnesota two – but the consistency mattered. Michigan was in the top nine of every AP poll of the decade.

Nebraska started the decade off with two national titles, Alabama ended with two national championships, and Notre Dame managed two of its own. But it was Oklahoma that turned into the star of the 1970s with back-to-back national titles with two second-place finishes and three third-place runs.

Alabama won three AP national championships and was in three other AP top tens to become the program of the 1960s. This was a quirky decade for the AP Poll – it was only a final top 10 from 1961 to 1967.

Oklahoma was 1950s college football. It won three national titles, went on a huge winning streak, and rocked the AP top 20 rankings for the decade.

Miami turned into the team of the 1980s with its three national championships and the swagger and style to go with them, but Nebraska had the most overall success in the AP poll. There wasn’t a national title, but the program was in the fight year after year.
