Wisconsin basketball ascends latest AP Poll after 8-0 start to 2024-25 slate

Wisconsin basketball ascends latest AP Poll after 8-0 start to 2024-25 slate

Wisconsin basketball landed at No. 11 in the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll on Monday.

After being ranked No. 15 in the poll’s Week 5 installation, Wisconsin earned 903 points in this week’s update to claim the No. 11 spot in the hierarchy. UConn, which held the No. 2 position, and Houston, which boasted the No. 6 spot in Week 4, each fell out of the top 10 to elevate the Badgers.

Purdue (No. 8) is the only Big Ten squad ranked higher than Wisconsin on this week’s list. Oregon (No. 12) and Illinois (No. 23) are the two other Big Ten teams to make the top 25.

For context, UW received 666 points in Week 4 after securing wins over UT Rio Grande Valley, UCF and Pittsburgh from Nov. 18-24. Wisconsin’s Greenbrier Tip-Off-clinching win over Pitt, a team now ranked No. 18 in the poll, and 103-88 win over Arizona appear to hold some extra weight for voters.

Meltdowns from other squads also help the Badgers’ case. The Indiana Hoosiers dropped two straight to Louisville and No. 7 Gonzaga to drop out of the rankings, No. 20 North Carolina lost to both No. 2 Auburn and Michigan State, and No. 17 Houston lost to No. 10 Alabama and Notre Dame.

Wisconsin sensation John Tonje deserves a bulk of the credit for Wisconsin’s scorching start. The 6-foot-5 wing is averaging 22.9 points per game off 52.7% from the floor, over 42% from deep and nearly 95% from the charity stripe.

As a team, UW is averaging nearly 85.3 points per game off 46.8% from the field, 35.9% from beyond the arc and a blistering 86.4% from the free throw line.

Wisconsin’s next game is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. CT vs. Michigan at the Kohl Center. The Badgers will then travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to face rival Marquette, the current No. 5-ranked team in the sport.

Wisconsin basketball scales latest AP Poll after Greenbrier Tip-Off triumph

Wisconsin basketball landed at No. 15 in the latest AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll on Monday.

After being ranked No. 19 in the poll’s Week 3 installation, Wisconsin earned 666 points in this week’s update to leapfrog Cincinnati and Arizona to claim the No., 15 spot in the hierarchy.

Just two Big Ten teams, Indiana (No. 14) and Purdue (No. 13), rank higher than Wisconsin on this week’s list.

For context, UW received 370 points in Week 3 after securing a signature win over Arizona, which held the No. 9 position at the time of the victory. Wisconsin’s wins over UT Rio Grande Valley, UCF and Pittsburgh have reassured voters of the team’s status as one of college basketball’s best teams thus far.

Wisconsin’s win over Pittsburgh put an exclamation on that impressive start. Backed by 33 points from star wing John Tonje, UW rallied back from a 14-point deficit to vanquish Pittsburgh on Nov. 24 to secure the program’s third November non-conference tournament title since 2021.

As they did in Week 3, Wisconsin also rocketed up the latest KenPom ranking and ESPN’s latest BPI. After being ranked No. 40 in the KenPom list before the Greenbrier Tip-Off, the Badgers are up 14 spots in KenPom to No. 26 overall, with the No. 12-rated offense and No. 72 defense.

ESPN’s latest BPI update has the Badgers at No. 27 overall with a projected final record of 21.8-9.2.

Tonje, who is playing like one of the best talents in all of college basketball, is averaging a stellar 23.0 points per game of 54.3% from the floor, over 40% from deep and over 95% fro the line.

As a team, UW is averaging nearly 87 points per game off 47.9% from the field, 36.3% from beyond the arc and a blistering 86.5% from the free throw line.

Wisconsin’s next game is at home against Chicago State on Nov. 30.

Texas Longhorns move up in Week 2’s AP Poll, but how high?

After dominating the Michigan Wolverines at the Big House, the Texas Longhorns jumped Ohio State into No. 2 in the newest AP Poll.

There was a big shakeup in the US LBM Coaches Poll for Week 2. But the AP Poll had even more changes after wild second week of the season.

Fresh off thumping Big Blue in Ann Arbor, the Texas Longhorns jumped the Ohio State Buckeyes and are now No. 2 in the ranking. The Michigan Wolverines fell seven spots, all the way to No. 17.

The biggest fall in the rankings was the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who were stunned at home by Northern Illinois. The Irish plummeted 13 spots to No. 18. NIU entered the poll this week at No. 25.

The Oregon Ducks, who had a hard time with Boise State, fell two spots to No. 9.

Texas Longhorns begin season ranked No. 4 in initial AP Poll

The first AP Poll of the season is out and Texas is ranked No. 4 to begin the highly-anticipated 2024 campaign.

The first AP Poll of the season is out and the Longhorns are ranked No. 4 to begin the highly-anticipated 2024 campaign. This is the first time Texas has debuted in the AP preseason Top 5 since 2009, when the Horns lost in the BCS Championship game against Alabama at the Rose Bowl.

The top seven teams in the AP Poll mirrors the top seven in the US LBM Coaches Poll released last week.

Georgia, Ohio State and Oregon rank ahead of Texas in the initial poll. The Bulldogs received 46 first place votes, the Buckeyes got 15 first place votes and the Ducks received 1 first place votes. Texas landed zero first place votes.

As the “super conference” era begins, the expanded SEC and Big Ten dominate the rankings with four teams apiece in the Top 10. Only four conferences are represented in the preseason rankings overall. The SEC leads the conference race with nine teams in the Top 25. The Big Ten has six representatives. The Big 12 lands five in the poll, while the ACC has four.

Texas rivals Oklahoma and Texas A&M also made the list at No. 16 and No. 20 respectively.

Five teams from the preseason AP Top 25 are on the Longhorns’ schedule:

9/7 at No. 9 Michigan

10/12 vs. No. 16 Oklahoma (in Dallas)

10/19 vs. No. 1 Georgia

11/20 at No. 20 Texas A&M

Texas finished the 2023 season ranked No. 3 in the AP Poll after losing the College Football Playoff Semifinal vs. Washington. The Longhorns 2024 season begins on 8/31 vs. Colorado State.

Up next is another difficult week starting off with a trip to arch-rival Oklahoma, who is playing much better basketball of late. Texas will then welcome in No. 11 Texas Tech to Austin for a massive rematch.

A 2-0 week would be an excellent boost for Texas’ NCAA tournament resume. ESPN has the Horns on the brink of a No. 4 seed as it stands today.

Big 12 basketball power rankings heading into conference play

Where does each Big 12 team rank ahead of conference play?

The Big 12 is arguably the best conference in college basketball top to bottom.

The conference has five teams ranked inside the AP Poll’s Top 25 rankings with two others barely missing the cut.

The Big 12 and the Pac-12 are the only two conferences with three top-10 teams. No. 1 Baylor looks fantastic again after winning their first national title a year ago. No. 6 Kansas reloaded well in the offseason and No. 8 Iowa State has been one of the bigger surprises of the season.

No. 17 Texas and No. 25 Texas Tech round out the rest of the Big 12 schools in the top 25. Texas Tech took down No. 14 Tennessee in overtime earlier in the season to jump into the rankings and has not lost since.

Oklahoma and West Virginia are on the outside looking in but have looked very good at times this season.

With conference play starting up this week, here is a look at our updated Big 12 basketball power rankings:

The Longhorns have yet to play up to their preseason expectations but remain in a good position nationally with Big 12 conference play approaching.

The Big 12 is once again one of the top conferences in college basketball with five teams ranked and two more inside the top 30.

LSU men’s and women’s basketball ranked in latest AP Poll

Both the men’s and women’s teams climb in the latest AP top 25 polls.

Both the LSU men’s and women’s teams are ranked once again and climbing in the AP Polls. The two teams are a combined 20-1 heading into Monday.

The LSU men’s basketball climbed in both the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll and the AP Poll. Last week saw the Tigers at No. 19 but now find themselves at No. 17. However, this time the Texas Longhorns are ahead of the Bayou Bengals, unlike how the coaches see it. Just 27 points separate the two teams. The Kentucky Wildcats are the lowest-ranked SEC team in the poll at No. 20.

The conference has five ranked teams and only Alabama is in the top 10, barely as they were ranked No. 10 this week. The Tigers will face the No. 12 ranked Auburn Tigers on Dec. 29.

Texas Basketball: Horns fall to No. 8 in latest AP Poll

After the Gonzaga loss, Texas falls three spots in the AP Top 25 Poll.

Texas opened the season with a dominant win over Houston Baptist before losing by double-digits on the road against No. 1 Gonzaga.

The Gonzaga matchup was an opportunity for Texas to prove to the country they have arrived as national championship contenders. Chris Beard’s squad is not quite at championship level yet, but playing against elite competition is the best way to get there.

Despite the loss, the Horns only fell three spots to No. 8 in the AP Poll’s updated Top 25.

Texas is joined by Kansas (No. 3) and defending champion Baylor (No. 9) as Big 12 schools ranked inside the top ten. Texas Tech and Oklahoma State are among schools reviving votes.

Many expected Texas to need some time to gel as a team. Beard rebuilt the roster with seven transfers who all played as the first or second scoring option at their previous schools. Texas’ offensive flow and overall chemistry will improve as the season goes along.

Texas will look to rebound this week at home against Northern Colorado and San Jose State.
