Cardinals announce signing of 2 D-linemen

The add Christian Ringo and Antwaun Woods to the defensive line room.

The Arizona Cardinals had three defensive linemen in for a workout on Thursday. They ended up signing two of them.

The first we knew of. It was reported Thursday night that the Cardinals signed former Colts and Cowboys defensive tackle Antwaun Woods to a one-year deal. He will wear No. 92.

He wasn’t the only signing. They also signed defensive tackle Christian Ringo, who was one of the players in for a workout.

Ringo is 6-1 and 300 lbs. He has been in the league since 2015 when he was drafted in the sixth round of the 2015 draft by the Green Bay Packers out of Louisiana-Lafayette.

After bouncing between four teams from 2016-2018, he did not play an NFL game until last season with the New Orleans Saints. He appeared in 14 games, starting four, and had 26 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

He will wear No. 70.

To make room for both players, the Cardinals released defensive lineman Matt Dickerson and tight end David Wells.

Cardinals add veteran nose tackle, sign Antwaun Woods

Woods has been in the league since 2016 and played most recently for the Indianapolis Colts.

The Arizona Cardinals brought in a trio of defensive tackles for workouts on Thursday and have reportedly signed one of the players.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and per the player’s agent Drew Rosenhaus, the Cardinals signed veteran nose tackle Antwaun Woods to a one-year contract.

Woods is 6-1, 318-lb nose tackle who has been in the league since 2016. He entered the league as an undrafted rookie out of USC.

He has played for the Titans, Cowboys and, last year, for the Colts.

He has appeared in 47 games in his career, starting 32. He has 88 career tackles and 2.5 career sacks.

The Cardinals did not have any veteran depth at nose tackle. Rashard Lawrence is expected to start but the Cardinals have no proven depth behind him.

Corey Peters has been that player since 2015 but remains unsigned.

When the Cardinals announce the signing, they will need to make a corresponding move to keep the roster at the 90-man limit.

Colts sign OT Greg Senat, DT Antwaun Woods to practice squad

Colts added OT Greg Senat and DT Antwaun Woods to the practice squad and placed S Ibraheim Campbell on IR.

The Indianapolis Colts signed offensive tackle Greg Senat and defensive tackle Antwaun Woods to the practice squad and placed safety Ibrahiem Campbell on the injured reserve list, the team announced Tuesday.

The Colts worked out Senat on Sunday while enjoying the extra day off before the road matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. Eric Fisher has struggled at left tackle while Braden Smith hasn’t played since Week 1.

Woods was released from the active roster on Sunday when the Colts elevated quarterback Brett Hundley, a move they had to make in order for Hundley to be eligible as the backup behind starter Carson Wentz.

Campbell was elevated from the practice squad for the Monday night game but suffered knee and ankle injuries during the loss. He will miss at least the next three games.

Colts sign DT Antwaun Woods to the practice squad

Colts signed DT Antwaun Woods to the practice squad on Tuesday.

The Indianapolis Colts signed defensive tackle Antwaun Woods to the practice squad and released defensive tackle Andrew Brown from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Woods initially made the 53-man roster but was released on Monday when the Colts activated left tackle Eric Fisher from the reserve/COVID-19 list. He signed with the Colts during the offseason as a part of the depth competition on the interior defensive line.

The Colts now have DeForest Buckner, Grover Stewart, Chris Williams and Taylor Stallworth as the primary defensive tackles on the roster.

Woods joins Kameron Cline as the only defensive tackles on the practice squad.

Colts activate LT Eric Fisher from COVID-19 list

Colts activated LT Eric Fisher from the reserve/COVID-19 list on Monday.

The Indianapolis Colts activated left tackle Eric Fisher from the reserve/COVID-19 list and released defensive tackle Antwaun Woods, the team announced Monday.

Fisher was a positive test 10 days ago and remained on the reserve list throughout the roster cuts. However, getting him back to the active roster, the Colts had to make a corresponding move.

With 11 defensive linemen on the 53-man roster, it makes sense the Colts made a move at that position.

It isn’t yet clear if Fisher will be ready to go for Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks. He is still working his way back from a torn Achilles in January but being on the active roster does seem encouraging for his timeline to return to game action.

This will certainly be something to monitor over the coming weeks, but Fisher is now officially on the active roster.

Colts injury updates: QB Carson Wentz returning to limited practice

Colts QB Carson Wentz is expected to return to practice on a limited basis this week.

Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich gave some updates on several injuries that have hit the roster in recent weeks, including Carson Wentz’s return from foot surgery.

It seems the Colts are getting encouraging news when it comes to Wentz’s timeline and prognosis. Despite undergoing surgery three weeks ago, the 28-year-old quarterback is expected to return to practice this week on a limited basis.

The same goes for center Ryan Kelly (elbow) and left guard Quenton Nelson (foot), both of which have missed the majority of training camp and both preseason games due to their respective injuries.

“You’ll see him out there on the practice field this week. He’ll be out there tomorrow. He’ll be out there tomorrow taking some things,” Reich told reporters Sunday. “He’ll be out there, he’ll be limited. He’ll be out there. It’ll be limited, he’ll be limited but he will be participating – as will (Ryan) Kelly and as well Quenton Nelson.”

This is certainly encouraging for the Colts to see three of their key starters returning to the field even if it is in a limited capacity. The hope is that all three will be ready for the Week 1 opener against the Seattle Seahawks, but it remains to be seen how that will go.

Reich also mentioned that defensive back Andre Chachere suffered a concussion on the last play of the game against the Minnesota Vikings while defensive tackle Antwaun Woods suffered a hamstring injury during the game.

Instant analysis of Colts signing DT Antwaun Woods

How Antwaun Woods fits with the Colts.

The Indianapolis Colts added some depth to the interior defensive line by signing former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Antwaun Woods to a one-year deal on Tuesday.

Recently waived by the Dallas Cowboys, Woods worked mostly at the one-technique on their front as depth piece. He’s likely to do the same with the Colts given the ties that Matt Eberflus has to his former team.

How Woods impacts the depth chart

The Colts have solid pieces in place on the interior and will have a massive competition for the depth roles at the one-technique behind starter Grover Stewart, who signed a three-year extension midway through the 2020 regular season.

Woods will be competing with Kameron Cline, Chris Williams and Taylor Stallworth, among others, for the backup one-technique role. In 2020, that role belonged to Stallworth, who played roughly 25% of the snaps behind Stewart.

If Woods winds up getting that role, that’s the kind of playing time that can be expected.

A solid run defender

Woods would be working primarily at the one-technique. His pass-rushing most likely won’t make an impact, but the Colts will want him to simply focus on plugging holes against the run.

According to Pro Football Focus, Woods has 44 run stops on 741 run-defending snaps since 2018. If the Colts are looking to upgrade their depth behind Stewart, Woods seems to be a solid option.

 Conclusion

Woods will have to compete for his role on the team with a crowded room behind Stewart but if he can prove to be a better run defender than the rest of the room, he has a shot to make the roster.

The Indianapolis Colts are set to sign former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Antwaun Woods to a one-year deal, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Woods visited the Colts on Monday and despite their depth on the interior defensive line, general manager Chris Ballard continues to add talent to the group ahead of the offseason workouts.

Woods was waived by the Cowboys last week after their overhaul of the defensive line this offseason, which has featured six new additions to the unit.

Woods went undrafted in 2016 and wound up signing with the Tennessee Titans where he played one game. He missed the 2017 season due to injury and signed with the Cowboys during the 2018 season.

In his three seasons with the Cowboys, Woods played 39 games (32 starts) recording 83 tackles (33 solo), 2.5 sacks, 4.0 tackles for loss and eight quarterback hits.

The Colts have some talent on the interior defensive line. With All-Pro DeForest Buckner at the three-technique and Grover Stewart plugging lanes at the one-technique, the Colts have some strong competition for depth.

Woods will be working in the room alongside Tyquan Lewis, Taylor Stallworth, Chris Williams, Andrew Brown and Kameron Cline.

Ex-Cowboys DT Antwaun Woods visiting Colts

Colts bring in a DT for a visit.

Former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Antwaun Woods is taking a free-agent visit with the Indianapolis Colts on Monday.

Woods was waived by the Cowboys last week after their overhaul of the defensive line this offseason, which has featured six new additions to the unit.

The Colts are bringing him in for a visit, and the news was first reported by Luke Diamond of ForTheColture and confirmed by Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The Colts have a pretty stout interior led by All-Pro DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart, but Chris Ballard is always looking for new pieces to add to the room.
