CB Antonio Hamilton unlikely to return from NFI in Week 5

Arizona Cardinals cornerback Antonio Hamilton is progressing well in his rehab, but it doesn’t sound like he’ll be ready for next Sunday’s matchup against the Eagles.

The Arizona Cardinals had a freak accident in the cornerback room when projected starter Antonio Hamilton suffered serious burns in a cooking incident.

Hamilton fortunately avoided any major long-term health complications but was placed on the NFI, putting him out at least the first four games of the season.

Following Sunday’s game with the Carolina Panthers, Hamilton is technically eligible to return by rule. However, Kliff Kingsbury didn’t sound overly optimistic that he would be available for Week 5’s contest with the Philadelphia Eagles.

“He’s moving around good,” he said Wednesday after practice. “Next week maybe a little aggressive, but we’re hopeful. I think we’ve got to get him out there to see what he’s retained as far as the football stuff, see how he moves around and make sure he is comfortable, but he looks good in his in his rehab.”

Hamilton posted videos on social media of him going through defensive back drills and looked to be in good shape. The Cardinals could use Hamilton back on the field sooner rather than later, as he was the projected No. 2 cornerback before his injury.

Having Hamilton in the fold allows the Cardinals to move Byron Murphy around in the slot and feel comfortable with their two outside corners in Hamilton and Marco Wilson.

The Cardinals could be looking at serious reinforcements in the following weeks with the return of DeAndre Hopkins, Rondale Moore and Hamilton.

CB Antonio Hamilton to miss at least 4 games after cooking accident

The Cardinals place their recently named No. 2 cornerback on NFI after he got hurt in a cooking accident. He will miss at least four games.

Arizona Cardinals cornerback Antonio won the No. 2 starting cornerback job in training camp but will now miss at least the first four games of the season. The Cardinals are placing him on the non-football injury list, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.

He apparently suffered an injury related to a cooking accident at his home.

After the Cardinals’ second preseason game, he missed practice in Glendale and did not make the trip to Nashville for the team’s joint practice and final preseason game when he had a doctor’s appointment.

Moving him to non-football injury list will open a roster spot. He must miss at least four games, so the first week he will be eligible to return is in Week 5 when the Cardinals host the Philadelphia Eagles.

It is unfortunate this happened. A journeyman who has played mostly special teams in the NFL, he finally broke through and won a job, only to now not be able to play.

While he is out, second-year cornerback Marco Wilson is expected to start opposite Byron Murphy and the No. 3 job will likely be newly acquired Traynon Mullen Jr.

Cardinals could possibly be thin at CB in Week 1

Antonio Hamilton’s untimely absence makes his availability for the season opener a question mark.

The Arizona Cardinals appeared to have figured out their cornerback rotation for when the season begins. However, plans might have to change.

Antonio Hamilton, who was in line to win the second starting cornerback job opposite Byron Murphy, now has some sort of injury or illness.

Last week, he did not practice in Arizona when he had a doctor’s appointment, according to head coach Kliff Kingsbury. He also did not practice in Nashville and sat out of the preseason finale, although he likely would not have played anyway.

Hamilton could miss the season opener, according to Kingsbury.

He told team reporter Paul Calvisi that Hamilton’s situation was “an unexpected situation and makes the numbers look really thin looking at Week 1 possibly.”

Kingsbury would not say what the issue was, indicating that it would show up on the injury report leading up to the season opener.

If Hamilton can’t play in Week 1, it will test a secondary with a team that has one of the most potent passing attacks in the league.

CB Antonio Hamilton out dealing with undisclosed issue

Hamilton missed practice Tuesday and Wednesday after having a doctor’s appointment. Kliff Kingsbury refused to elaborate.

The Arizona Cardinals are seemingly thin at cornerback and are a little thinner at the position. Cornerback Antonio Hamilton, recently revealed as being in the lead for the No. 2 cornerback job behind Byron Murphy, was not at practice Tuesday or Wednesday.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury would not say exactly what the issue is.

On Tuesday, he told reporters Hamilton had a doctor’s appointment.

On Wednesday in Tennessee, Hamilton was also absent from practice. When asked about his absence, Kingsbury again would not elaborate.

“He’s still being evaluated,” he said, according to AZCardinals.com’s Darren Urban. “We’ll let you know Week 1 when we have to (on the injury report).”

Kingsbury was not concerned about the absence.

The Cardinals have two more full weeks after this week before their season opener.

It is concerning to have another cornerback unavailable, but if he doesn’t end up missing practice time in Week 1, it won’t matter much.

Antonio Hamilton ahead of Marco Wilson for No. 2 CB job

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury said Hamilton “has really taken over that No. 2 spot for now.”

One position where the starting jobs are not set in stone yet is at cornerback. There are three important roles with only one player — Byron Murphy — with a sure role.

Murphy is the No. 1 cornerback who will play every down and will slide inside to play the slot often, if not all the time the Cardinals play a nickel defense.

The second and third cornerback spots are more up for grabs but one player is pulling ahead.

As reported by multiple media members Friday, head coach Kliff Kingsbury indicated that Antonio Hamilton has taken a hold on the No. 2 cornerback job.

Hamilton has been a journeyman for his career, mostly making an impact on special teams. He played effectively last season filling for injured cornerbacks after Robert Alford and Marco Wilson got hurt.

Now he is on pace to be an every-down player opposite Murphy.

If this keeps up, Wilson, the second-year player the Cardinals drafted in the fourth round in 2021, would likely end up being the third cornerback, playing the role Alford had last season and that the team envisioned Jeff Gladney would have when they signed him, only to have him tragically die in a car accident.

The six-foot, 188-pound Hamilton had 38 tackles and four pass breakups for the Cardinals in 312 defensive snaps, which were a career high.

POLL: Who will win Cardinals’ No. 3 CB job?

Right now, it is a battle between Antonio Hamilton, Josh Jackson, Breon Borders and young players. Who do you think will win the job?

The Arizona Cardinals will open training camp in a little more than a week and the position battles will begin. A few spots in the playing rotation are legitimately up for grabs. One is at cornerback.

Byron Murphy and Marco Wilson are the Cardinals’ top two guys but their third cornerback to play in their nickel package is not certain.

The three most likely guys to win the job are Antonio Hamilton, Breon Borders and Josh Jackson.

Hamilton played pretty well in limited action last season when called upon to fill in when players were injured. He is more of a special teams player but can fill in playing in the slot. If he plays, it means Byron Murphy would stay on the boundary full-time.

Jackson was signed by the Cardinals during minicamp. He has experience starting outside for the Packers and enters his fifth NFL season. He played only nine defensive snaps for the Chiefs last season.

Borders played one game for the Cardinals last season and struggled. He has bounced around the league and has a handful of starts in his career.

The rest of the guys on the roster are young. Seventh-round pick Christian Matthew is in the mix but played at a small school at Valdosta State. Darrell Baker is an undrafted rookie. Nate Brooks spent last season on the practice squad after being an undrafted rookie. Jace Whittaker has played mostly special teams in two seasons with the Cardinals, bouncing back and forth from the roster to the practice squad.

Who do you think will win the battle? Will they sign another player like Robert Alford to return and play?

Vote in the poll and give your thoughts in the comments below the article.

Cardinals CB Antonio Hamilton salary, contract details, cap hit

CB Antonio Hamilton was re-signed to a one-year deal. $500,000 of his salary is guaranteed and the Cardinals get cap relief from the deal.

One of the more recent moves the Arizona Cardinals made was re-sign cornerback Antonio Hamilton to a one-year contract. Hamilton has been in the league since 2016 and joined the Cardinals last year.

He was signed to Arizona’s practice squad and then later signed to the active roster. He played 208 special teams snaps and, because of injuries, ended up getting playing time on defense.

He appeared in all 17 games last season and even started twice. He played 312 defensive snaps and finished the season with 38 tackles and four pass breakups. He was tied for second on the team with nine special teams tackles.

Over the Cap has his contract details. We go over the numbers below.

Antonio Hamilton contract details

Hamilton’s one-year deal is for a total of almost $1.19 million.

His 2022 salary will be the league minimum of $1.035 million, but the Cardinals have fully guaranteed $500,000 of that, making it likely he will make the final roster.

He receives a signing bonus of $152,500.

Salary cap implications

Hamilton’s contract is worth almost $1.19 million total. His contract qualifies for the veteran benefit for cap purposes. His cap hit will be a little less than $1.04 million. The Cardinals get cap relief of $140,000 as a result.

Cardinals re-sign CB Antonio Hamilton to one-year deal

After playing in every game for the Cardinals in 2021, he comes back on a one-year deal.

The Arizona Cardinals added a familiar face to their group of cornerbacks. They announced the re-signing of Antonio Hamilton.

Hamilton was signed to the practice squad last year before the season after he was cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was signed to the active roster later and played in every game, starting twice.

He had 38 tackles and four pass breakups, playing 312 defensive snaps, 29% of the Cardinals’ defensive snaps. He also added 208 special teams snaps and was tied for second on the team with nine special teams tackles.

He has been in the league since 2016, playing two seasons for the Raiders, two for the Giants and one for the Chiefs.

The way the roster is set up, he is in line for a role as the team’s fourth or fifth cornerback, specializing in special teams play but giving the team inside/outside versatility if needed for depth.

Kliff Kingsbury praises cornerbacks for play against 49ers

“Those guys competed their tails off and really helped us win that football game. You can’t say enough good things about them being ready to roll and prepared when their opportunity arose.”

The Arizona Cardinals did not have their two top cornerbacks on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. Byron Murphy and Marco Wilson both missed the game with rib injuries.

That meant the Cardinals had to test their depth with Robert Alford playing nearly every snap along with Antonio Hamilton and Jace Whittaker.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury heaped praise on the group both after the game and again on Monday when he spoke to reporters.

“(I) was really, really proud of Jace Whittaker, Antonio Hamilton and even Rob Alford, who’s not a young guy, but has been a veteran with the most action he’s seen in over two years,” he said. “Those guys competed their tails off and really helped us win that football game. You can’t say enough good things about them being ready to roll and prepared when their opportunity arose.”

The Cardinals have not yet allowed a 100-yard receiver this season. They held 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel, who was leading the NFL in receiving yards, to only 58, and they did it with a 2020 undrafted rookie, a guy they signed off the streets a few weeks ago and someone who had not played a game in two seasons.

Against the Cleveland Browns this week, ideally the Cardinals can have back both Murphy and Wilson, or at least one of the two.

However, if not, then they will rely on these three scrappy competitors against in Week 6.
