Washington signs 8 players to reserve/future contacts

Washington signs eight players to reserve/future contracts Monday.

The offseason is finally here. One day after the Washington Football Team completed the 2021 NFL season, they began looking ahead to 2022.

Washington signed eight players to reserve/future contracts Tuesday, including a pair of former draft picks who’ve spent considerable time on the main roster. Here is the complete list:

  • G Zack Bailey
  • C/G Beau Benzschawel
  • G Deion Calhoun
  •  DT Tyler Clark
  • WR Antonio Gandy-Golden
  • WR Kelvin Harmon
  • G Nolan Laufenberg
  • WR Marken Michel

The most notable names from the list are Harmon and Gandy-Golden. Harmon was a sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft. He spent the 2019 season on Washington’s roster, catching 30 passes for 365 yards. He missed all of 2020 with a knee injury. Harmon was released over the summer before re-signing with Washington’s practice squad.

Gandy-Golden was a fourth-round pick in 2020 and appeared in six games. In 2021, Gandy-Golden spent the entire season between Washington’s practice squad and active roster.

Benzschawel spent all of 2021 on Washington’s practice squad.

We’ll keep you posted on any future signings.

Washington releases WR Antonio Gandy-Golden

Washington made several roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game against the Eagles, including the release of a former fourth-round pick.

In preparation for Sunday’s Week 17 game against Philadelphia, the Washington Football Team made several roster moves Saturday, including releasing 2020 fourth-round draft choice WR Antonio Gandy-Golden.

Washington believed they had obtained a receiver with size and one who could be a real threat in the red zone, when they drafted the 6-foot-4 Gandy-Golden out of Liberty University.

However, AGG in 2020 was targeted only seven times for one reception, and in this 2021 season, the former Liberty Flames receiver appeared in only four games (weeks 5-8) He only saw action on 8, 3, 6 and 3 snaps and was not targeted a single time. AGG is the first WFT draft choice from the 2020 draft to be released.

The club also announced offensive line coach John Matsko will miss Sunday’s game due to COVID-19 protocols and assistant offensive line coach Travelle Wharton will replace Matsko.

They also elevated G Deion Calhoun and P Ryan Winslow from the practice squad.

The other roster moves made Saturday:

Washington inactive players vs. Seahawks

Washington’s inactive list does not include Curtis Samuel. Some good news for the WFT.

The Washington Football Team announced their Week 12 inactive list for the Monday Night Football game against the Seattle Seahawks from FedEx Field, and it contained some good news.

First, the inactives: Wide receivers Dax Milne and Antonio Gandy-Golden, cornerback Corn Elder, center Tyler Larsen, defensive end Bunmi Rotimi and tight end Ricky Seals-Jones.

A notable name missing from the inactive list is wide receiver Curtis Samuel. Samuel, who has missed all but two games this season with a groin injury, will play vs. Seattle, although he will be on a “pitch count” per head coach Ron Rivera.

With Samuel expected to play, quarterback Taylor Heinicke will finally have his full complement of weapons. Tight end Logan Thomas will also play, after being activated from injured reserve earlier on Monday.

Washington has won two consecutive games and could move into the No. 7 — and final — playoff spot in the NFC with a win over the Seahawks. Seattle enters Monday night’s game on a two-game losing streak.

Washington inactive players vs. Buccaneers

Here are Washington’s inactives for Week 10.

The Washington Football Team announced their inactive list for the Week 10 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from FedEx Field.

Wide receivers Curtis Samuel and Antonio Gandy-Golden, and cornerbacks Corn Elder and Benjamin St-Juste are Washington’s inactives.

This is the seventh game Samuel has missed in 2021, due to an injured groin. Samuel recently had a second opinion on the injury but head coach Ron Rivera intends to exhaust all options before placing Samuel on season-ending injured reserve.

St-Juste was added to the injury list on Thursday which, at the time, was described as an illness. On Friday, it was revealed that St-Juste was in concussion protocol and would miss Week 10. The rookie from Minnesota had been playing well as of late.

Gandy-Golden has spent the season between the practice squad and the active roster. Elder was signed off Carolina’s practice squad on Oct. 13 to provide cornerback depth after injuries to Torry McTyer and Darryl Roberts.

Washington elevates WR Antonio Gandy-Golden from practice squad

Washington elevated Antonio Gandy-Golden from the practice squad on Saturday.

The Washington Football Team could be down three wide receivers on Sunday when they host the New Orleans Saints at FedEx Field. On Friday, Dyami Brown and Cam Sims were ruled out after suffering injuries in last week’s win at Atlanta.

Curtis Samuel is also questionable for the game, and if anyone has followed the saga of his injured groin, you can’t feel too comfortable about his status for Sunday.

So, in preparation for Sunday, Washington elevated second-year wide receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden from the practice squad. That means Washington will have Terry McLaurin, Samuel, Adam Humphries, Dax Milne and Gandy-Golden at wide receiver against the Saints — if Samuel plays.

Gandy-Golden, a fourth-round pick in 2020, played in six games as a rookie and caught one pass. He was released over the summer and quickly re-signed with Washington’s practice squad.

Washington announces 15 players signed to the practice squad

Washington announced 15 players have signed to the practice squad. All are familiar names.

The Washington Football Team announced their official 53-man roster on Tuesday. Washington had to release some talented players to get down to its final 53, including former draft choices.

So, on Wednesday, it was no surprise when the Football Team announced their practice squad that it was comprised of many of the players who were recently released. In fact, all 15 members of Washington’s first 2021 practice squad are players who were with Washington over the summer.

Players like wide receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden, a fourth-round pick in 2020. Head coach Ron Rivera described how tough it was to release Gandy-Golden on Tuesday. Now, he’s back.

Running back Peyton Barber, who was Washington’s short-yardage back in 2020, is also back.

Washington can sign 16 players to its practice squad, yet announced just 15 players on Wednesday. Washington could opt to fill that spot later.

Here are the 15 players who signed with Washington’s practice squad on Wednesday.

  • RB Peyton Barber
  • OL Beau Benzschawel
  • DE William Bradley-King
  • WR Antonio Gandy-Golden
  • C Keith Ismael
  • CB Danny Johnson
  • LB Jordan Kunaszyk
  • G Wes Martin
  • LB Jared Norris
  • S Jeremy Reaves
  • DE Bunmi Rotimi
  • T David Steinmetz
  • DT Daniel Wise
  • DT Gabe Wright
  • C Jon Toth

5 most surprising players cut by Washington

While there were no major shockers on Tuesday, here are five moves that could be considered the most surprising.

The Washington Football Team released 27 players over the last two days to meet the league-mandated 53-man roster by Tuesday afternoon.

For the most part, there were no surprises. On Monday, Washington released 10 players, none of which were a surprise. However, on Tuesday, the Football Team released five players who were a bit of a surprise.

The bigger surprises may be Washington keeping just four linebackers on the initial 53-man roster than the actual players released.

Here are five players whose releases could be considered the most surprising on Tuesday.

Peyton Barber, Antonio Gandy-Golden & Jimmy Moreland among Washington’s cuts on Tuesday

The release of Jimmy Moreland is the most surprising of the bunch.

The Washington Football Team continues to release players as it looks to trim the roster to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

Washington released 10 players on Monday, none of which were a surprise.

On Tuesday, one of Washington’s first cuts was third-year cornerback Jimmy Moreland. It was a bit of a surprise. A seventh-round pick out of James Madison in 2019, Moreland played in 30 games for Washington over the past two seasons.

He was one of Washington’s top three corners in 2020.

The additions of William Jackson III and Benjamin St-Juste and the emergence of Torry McTyer made Moreland expendable in the end. Also, the versatility of Bobby McCain, Kendall Fuller and Kam Curl helped make Washington’s decision easier.

Veteran running back Peyton Barber was Washington’s short-yardage back in 2020. Washington’s starting running back, Antonio Gibson, should handle those duties in 2021. The emergence of undrafted rookie Jaret Patterson proved too much for Barber.

Gandy-Golden, a fourth-round pick in 2020, was a victim of the numbers game at wide receiver. He had a strong preseason and many, myself included, thought he’d done enough to earn a spot. He would be an ideal candidate for the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Make sure to follow our continuing coverage of all of Washington’s roster moves as it works to trim the roster to 53 players.

Last-minute news and notes before Washington’s preseason finale

Some last-minute news and notes before Washington’s preseason finale against the Ravens.

The Washington Football Team will be without their top two quarterbacks against the Baltimore Ravens in the preseason finale.  Head coach Ron Rivera will not play Ryan Fitzpatrick and Taylor Heinicke, instead going with Kyle Allen and Steven Montez.

Apparently, Washington will be without most of its starters.

Here are all of Washington’s starters, per Rhiannon Walker of The Athletic.

One item of note is Peyton Barber starting at running back. You’d think this would be a time for the coaching staff to evaluate rookie Jaret Patterson further.

Is this the latest sign that Patterson’s spot is secure?

Washington is going with Antonio Gandy-Golden, Dax Milne and DeAndre Carter at wide receiver. These three are all fighting for the final one — or two — spots on the roster at receiver.

Another interesting spot is at defensive end. William Bradley-King and Daniel Wise will get the first crack at impressing the coaching staff. Shaka Toney should also see plenty of time, too.

Washington and Baltimore kick off at 6 p.m. EDT.

Washington’s offensive snap counts from Week 2 preseason win over Bengals

Here is a look at the snap counts for every player on Washington’s offense.

The Washington Football Team picked up its first preseason win on Friday with a 17-13 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

With Washington down one point in the fourth quarter, rookie running back Jaret Patterson scored from one yard out to give Washington its decisive points.

Washington quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick played one quarter, completing seven of 13 passes for 96 yards. As a team, Washington had 70 offensive plays in its win over the Bengals.

So, who led the Football Team in snaps?

We look at the snap count for every player on offense, broken down by position groups.
