Marcel Reed, 4-star QB flips commitment from Ole Miss to Texas A&M

The Aggies land another big-time recruit.

Chaos is the operative for the recruiting world this week as yet another blue chip quarterback has flipped his commitment. On Monday, Montgomery Bell Academy (Tenn.) Senior Marcel Reed decommitted from Ole Miss.

Hours later, Reed announced that he has committed to Texas A&M.

Reed (6-foot-1, 175 pounds) is a four-star recruit who’s ranked No. 18 at quarterback and 297 overall in the class of 2023. He had 20 other offers to choose from, including just about every other school in the SEC.

As a passer, Reed finished his Senior season with 2,198 yards, a 58.8% completion rate, 27 touchdowns, six interceptions and a 113.7 QB rate. Reed is also an exceptional rushing threat. On the ground he posted another 944 yards and 15 touchdowns on 146 carries (6.5 yards per attempt).

It’s a significant acquisition for the Aggies, who have suffered a string of decommitments in recent weeks – most notably No. 1 linebacker Anthony Hill, who’s now committed to Texas.

After adding Reed Texas A&M is now ranked No. 17 in the nation in the 2023 recruiting cycle. Meanwhile, Ole Miss has fallen to No. 27.

Where Texas’ 2023 recruiting class ranks after Anthony Hill’s commitment

Anthony Hill vaults Texas four spots higher in the On3 consensus recruiting rankings.

When the Texas A&M Aggies originally earned five-star linebacker Anthony Hill’s commitment, I wrote A&M landed a haymaker on Texas. In flipping Hill from the Aggies, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian landed a knockout punch.

The win on the recruiting trail skyrocketed the Longhorns up the recruiting rankings and gave Texas yet another impact player for the 2023 class.

The Longhorns now have the No. 3 recruiting class in the On3 consensus. The consensus combines the rankings from all four major recruiting websites.

Texas has eight Top 100 players committed according to On3. Among the Longhorns’ Top 100 players are the No. 1 quarterback, No. 1 running back, No. 1 linebacker, two elite wide receivers, the No. 5 cornerback, the No. 3 safety and an elite pass rusher.

Here’s a look at the top 10 recruiting classes in the country for the 2023 cycle.

BOOM: Five-star LB Anthony Hill commits to Texas

The nation’s top linebacker is a Texas Longhorn.

Five-star linebacker Anthony Hill announced his commitment to Texas on Thursday night.

The nation’s top linebacker prospect committed to the Longhorns over the likes of Alabama, Miami and Texas A&M. Hill pushes Texas’ recruiting class to No. 3 overall in the 2023 cycle.

The Denton Ryan product has a chance to make an early impact on Texas’ defense. Hill has the prototypical frame and athleticism to excel at the college level. He has been one of the best players at the Texas 6A level for the last three seasons.

247Sports recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks compares Hill to New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis.

Athletic, physical, violent off-ball linebacker who occasionally steps to the line of scrimmage. Long-term positional home has been in question in the past, but functional athleticism and playmaking ability are not. Senior season displayed improved in-space competency as a big-bodied traditional off-ball ‘backer who could likely stay there in the long term.

Texas now has four five-stars in its 2023 recruiting class, more than any team in the country.

Texas Football: Looking at why it’s quiet on the recruiting front

Texas is looking to hold onto elite recruits while adding elite talent like Anthony Hill.

Things are fairly quiet in recruiting on the Forty Acres right now. It’s not hard to deduce why the Longhorns aren’t making a ton of noise. Texas is all in on keeping its class intact and bringing in five-star linebacker Anthony Hill.

The Longhorns would love to sign elite receivers DeAndre Moore and Ja’Kobe Lane and I don’t mean to diminish their efforts there. However, Texas has a chance to fill a need at linebacker with what would be its best talent at the position since Derrick Johnson.

The 2023 class is already stacked with players who could make an impact and perhaps even start right away. Arch Manning, Cedric Baxter, Johntay Cook and Ryan Niblett should have Texas fans on the edge of their seats when they take the field.

On the defensive side, Texas has excellent recruits on every level. That said, Hill could be the piece that sets the Longhorns’ defensive class over the top.

Here’s a look at highlights from a few guys Texas already has in the boat.

Texas Football: Good news is on the horizon

Let’s look at good news happening on the Forty Acres.

It’s only Tuesday, but it’s already been a long week on the Forty Acres. Even so, good news is on its way.

Last week, Texas recruiting operations coordinator Tyler Johnson hinted at some positivity coming the Longhorns’ way. More than that, the Longhorns enter a highly important week of recruiting in which Steve Sarkisian is likely to make inroads towards a top recruiting class.

This week Sarkisian will be making in home visits to some of the major recruits the team is after for 2022. We’ve already mentioned he will look to strengthen his bond with Anthony Hill and the Hill family on Thursday. The Longhorns’ head coach’s authenticity should make the visit a positive one.

This weekend, Texas hosts big-time targets including portal cornerback Gavin Holmes.

Here’s a look at potential good news coming for Texas.

Top uncommitted prospects left in the 2023 recruiting class

Who are the top uncommitted players in the nation?

Recruiting is beginning to heat up as we approach the early signing period on Dec. 21. Programs across the country are doing everything in their power to close out the cycle on a good note.

Alabama sits on top of the team rankings at the moment, followed by the likes of Georgia, Notre Dame and Texas. The race for the No. 1 spot is going to come down to the final whistle.

While the majority of the top 300 prospects have already made up their mind on where they will play college football, multiple star players remain uncommitted.

Players are taking last-minute visits, meeting with coaches and monitoring the transfer portal to figure out where they want to go. Recruiting is the backbone of college football and the decisions of these prospects directly impact the future of the game.

Here is a look at the 10 highest-rated uncommitted recruits in the 2023 cycle according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Five-star Anthony Hill will host Steve Sarkisian for in-home visit Thursday

Here are some highlights of the gifted athlete.

The 2023 recruiting cycle is heating up for the Texas Longhorns and college football teams across the country. Steve Sarkisian’s staff is looking to close one of its most important recruits, Anthony Hill.

News surfaced that Sarkisian would make a visit to the Denton Ryan linebacker’s home. The success of the visit could go a long way in bringing the unique talent to Austin.

Hill is a linebacker of a different caliber than Texas has seen in recent years. Malik Jefferson certainly received his fair share of hype before making an immediate impact. Albeit, even Jefferson might not match the talent of Texas’ top LB target for 2023.

The Denton native once narrowed his choices to Texas and Texas A&M before committing to the Aggies. Since then, he’s given his decision second thoughts.

Hill decommitted from A&M not long ago. In the days since, Texas has been seen as a favorite to win the recruitment.
