5 & 4 Possibles: Cowboys have FAs in spades, who they should book in 2020

An examination of the 2020 free agency period for the Dallas Cowboys with five to keep, five to go and five to pursue.

The tidal wave of change brought in by the hiring of head coach Mike McCarthy has engulfed the Dallas Cowboys franchise and once the waters recede and the situation calms, the team and the organization will likely have a very different look.  The effect is already evident on the coaching staff, where it appears only a select few, including OC Kellen Moore, have survived the sweeping alterations.

Soon, the roster will undergo the same transformation once the 2020 league year starts as the front office will look towards getting the team’s top free agents inked to new deals.  This activity will make for some tough decisions for both Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones, despite the club’s expected cap space of close to $90 million dollars.

The Cowboys have an incredible 24 unrestricted free agents and another five either restricted or exclusive rights players to mull over.  They will not keep all and may not even keep many as the new staff may have its own outlook on the talent and where they want to start remodeling to flesh out their version of the team.

Here are 5 suggestions for the team to keep.

Some of the keepers are very easy to identify.

QB Dak Prescott and WR Amari Cooper are not going anywhere.  Despite the anxiety that was created by the fact McCarthy had yet to speak to Prescott after a week on the job, he will be a Cowboy one way or another.  Whether it is a blockbuster long-term deal or franchise tag, he will be leading the team into the season.  Cooper is slightly less of a sure bet, but it is still very likely he gets a deal of some kind as well.  The cost to acquire him for less than two seasons of production is simply too much to bear, especially given how weak the 2019 draft class was without a first round pick.

That leaves three more.

Cobb’s history and relationship with McCarthy will likely be a deciding factor.  At a fairly modest price tag of $5-7 million and some juice still left in his legs, he could come back on a short term deal fitting a player of his age.  His familiarity with the offensive design will be invaluable as the staff installs their scheme that will feel very different to many, including the quarterback.

Capable swing tackles are a valuable commodity in this league for all teams, but more especially the Cowboys.  With Tyron Smith sitting out three games per season over the past four campaigns, a veteran who can step in and not be a huge liability is priceless.  Dallas has an option on his contract they can exercise and they would be wise to do so.

CB Anthony Brown

Bringing back Brown may not be the most glamorous commitment but it may be the most practical given the decisions that will have to be made.  Brown will be rebounding from a triceps injury and should be relatively easy to sign back to return and provide a veteran buffer as the Cowboys go after youth at the position in April.

Other possibilities: DT Kerry Hyder, K Kai Forbath, LB Joe Thomas, CB C.J. Goodwin

Cowboys fill roster void with WR-turned-CB instead of promoting Olumba

The Cowboys chose to go off roster in plugging the void left by Brown, and they’re bringing in a good athlete with a chance to snare balls.

The Dallas Cowboys have a new member of their secondary, inking Deante Burton to a contract that will make him a member of the 53-man roster for at minimum the next three weeks. The move was necessary after the team had to place slot corner Anthony Brown on injured reserve following an arm injury suffered in the club’s Week 11 victory over the Detroit Lions.

Brown required surgery, ending his season. While Jourdan Lewis had already usurped Brown in the starting lineup, the loss of Brown thins out the depth at the cornerback position. The team has been working with five corners on the roster for much of the season, and now has the same number after claiming the 6-foot-2, 200-pound corner off of the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad.

To this point of his career, Burton has not been a return man in the NFL, but did so in high school and had several big special teams plays in college at Kansas State. Dallas has struggled on special teams in multiple facets, so this acquisition could potentially be part of an attempt to solve that fraction of the season’s equation.

Coming from a practice squad, the Cowboys are required to keep Burton on their active roster for a minimum of three weeks, which means he’ll have a tryout with the team through at least the club’s December 5 road matchup against the Chicago Bears.

Earlier in the year, the club lost fifth-round pick Michael Jackson in a similar move when the Lions snagged the University of Miami product.

UDFA Chris Westry is on injured reserve, but the club saw Burton as a better fit than current practice squader Donovan Olumba, who was impressive in his preseason work but failed to make the team’s opening roster.

Behind starters Byron Jones and Chidobe Awuzie, Lewis is the only CB currently getting defense snaps. C.J. Goodwin has been a core special teams player for the Cowboys, but rarely sees the field on defense. He has just 20 snaps (2.9%) as opposed to 181 on teams (66.8%).

As for Burton, he was originally a UDFA of the Atlanta Falcons, joining the league in 2017 out of Kansas State, where he was a wide receiver.

During his time on the Falcons’ practice squad, he made the transition to defense. Perhaps the Cowboys are hoping his experience on offense could lead him to making better plays on the ball than the club has gotten. Dallas only has four interceptions through 10 games.

The 25-year-old has spent time with the Packers, Falcons for a second stint, and Texans before being on the Colts practice squad this year. He has three games under his belt and five total tackles, all of which came against the Philadelphia Eagles in one game each for the Falcons and Texans.

He also appeared in the playoff game for Houston, logging five special teams snaps.

Anthony Brown’s season is over, Cowboys CB to have surgery

An injury update on Dallas Cowboys cornerback Anthony Brown and offensive tackle La’el Collins.

In the fourth quarter of the Dallas Cowboys victory over the Detroit Lions, things started to head south on the injury front. Multiple injuries cascaded down on the club in the matter of a few plays and while DeMarcus Lawrence and Xavier Woods were able to continue, not everyone was so fortunate.

Among the players who didn’t return to the game were CB Anthony Brown and RT La’el Collins. Jason Garrett gave an update on the health of two of his key contributors, and while there’s a little bit of good, there’s also plenty of bad.

Brown will have season ending surgery on his triceps while Collins will be monitored throughout the week and is hopeful to be available for Sunday’s big matchup.

Although it seems the team averted disaster with Collins, this could very well be the end of the road in Dallas for Brown.

In recent weeks, he’s watched his playing time dwindle at the hands of fellow CB Jourdan Lewis. Regardless, the timing of the injury is unfortunate in multiple ways. For the player, it can devalue the best shot at landing a life-changing contract in the offseason. For the team, it loses depth at a position that can never have enough of it.

A 2016 sixth-round pick out of Purdue, Brown worked his way onto the field as the team’s slot corner in Week 3 of his rookie season. He held it down admirably, working his way into the hearts of coaching staff and fans alike. Throughout his career Brown tallied four interceptions and three forced fumbles.
