Michael B. Jordan recreated his iconic “Hey, Auntie” Black Panther moment with Angela Bassett at the Oscars

One of the absolute best moments.

Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors took to the stage Sunday night to present the Oscar for Best Cinematography. As they strode to the microphone, Jordan — who starred with Angela Bassett in both Black Panther and the sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever — looked to his co-star and hit her with one of his iconic quotes.

“Hey, Auntie.”

Majors followed it with a, “We love you,” to the iconic actress as she sat in the front row in a stunning purple dress. Bassett was one of the favorites to take home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but Everything Everywhere All At Once‘s Jamie Lee Curtis heard her name called instead.

I’m sure she appreciated the love from two wonderful actors.

Oscars 2023: How many Oscars have Marvel movies won?

The MCU doesn’t have the greatest history when it comes to the Oscars

Over the last decade and a half or so, Marvel has evolved from a company that produces comic books and storylines to an absolute cinematic powerhouse. It’s the most popular movie franchise in the world at this point, with four of the top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time.

So it’d be reasonable for someone to think that, with Marvel being this enormous, the franchise would have to have at least a handful of academy awards from the Oscars at this point.

However, that actually isn’t the case. The MCU hasn’t won many Oscars awards at all. In fact, the only wins the MCU does have from the Academy have come in the last few years and none of them have to do with on-screen performances.

In total, the MCU has been nominated for academy awards 26 different times, including 5 for this upcoming Oscars.

However, the franchise only has a total of three wins from those nominations, all coming from 2018’s Black Panther. The movie took home awards for best production design, best costume design and best original score at the 2019 Oscars.

Things could change this year. Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther 2 has Angela Bassett up for Best Supporting Actress after her performance as Ramonda in the film. Her dazzling performance is the MCU’s best hope for an on-screen Academy Award.

We’ll see how things go, though.

Angela Bassett’s awards history at the Oscars

Has Angela Bassett ever won an Oscar? We’ve got the answer.

Angela Bassett has spent much of her career turning in beloved performances across film and television.

Could an Academy Award be next?

Bassett is nominated for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and could take home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

After being nominated in Best Actress for playing music legend Tina Turner in 1993’s What’s Love Got to Do with It, Bassett could take home her first Academy Award during Sunday’s broadcast.

Bassett has won two Golden Globes in her career for What’s Love Got to Do with It and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She won a Screen Actors Guild ensemble award for Black Panther in 2019.

She’s also been nominated for a host of Emmys and a BAFTA award.

Bassett winning an Oscar would also make her the first person to ever win an Academy Award for acting in a Marvel movie. Lots of history could be made if Bassett wins the gold on Sunday.

Jamie Lee Curtis had a delightful reaction to winning Best Supporting Actress at SAG Awards

Jamie Lee Curtis might now be an Oscar winner next month.

The Screen Actors Guild threw a fascinating wrench into awards season on Sunday night with its Best Supporting Actress category.

While Black Panther: Wakanda Forever actress Angela Bassett looked poised to cement her status as frontrunner for the Oscar, Everything Everywhere All at Once co-star and industry veteran Jamie Lee Curtis stunned with the victory.

It was her first Screen Actors Guild honor. The win also might be the indicator that Curtis will walk away with her first Oscar.

Since 2009, SAG’s Supporting Actress category has overlapped with the Oscars all but once. In 2018, Emily Blunt won for A Quiet Place in a category where eventual Oscar winner Regina King wasn’t nominated.

Curtis’ reaction to winning the award and ensuing speech were absolutely priceless.

While nothing is settled in stone for March’s Oscar ceremony, the momentum has shifted Curtis’ way and may stay there.

If Bassett still winds up taking home the Academy Award, she’d be the first-ever actress to win for a Marvel film. However, right now, it’s all coming up Laurie Strode.

10 key takeaways from the 95th Oscar nominations, including Top Gun’s surprising misses

Breaking down the 2023 Academy Awards nomination’s surprises, snubs, favorites and more.

The 95th Academy Award nominations have made their way to the forefront of the culture conversation as of Tuesday morning.

While some of the awards love was expected (Top Gun: Maverick! Everything Everywhere All at Once!), other beams of approval came with a bit of a surprise (All Quiet on the Western Front! To Leslie?!).

After Oscar winner Riz Ahmed and Girls alum Allison Williams revealed this year’s slate of nominees, it became clear that some films are in perfect positioning for easy awards. Others, however, will remain in the dark as campaigning continues on for the little gold men.

In a post-pandemic Academy landscape, anything is possible, and no race is settled.

Let’s look at 10 key takeaways from this year’s nominations and what they mean for the 95th ceremony and the Oscars as a whole.

The show itself will take place on Sunday, March 12.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: Where to stream, how to watch

How to watch Academy Award nominee Angela Bassett in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

For the first time ever, a movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe earned an Academy Award nomination in an acting category, thanks to Angela Bassett’s stunning performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever earned five total nominations this year, including for Visual Effects, Original Song (“Lift Me Up”), Costume Design and Makeup and Hairstyling, along with Bassett’s Best Supporting Actress nom.

Bassett is up against Hong Chau in The Whale, Kerry Condon in The Banshees of Inisherin, Stephanie Hsu in Everything Everywhere All at Once and Jamie Lee Curtis in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
