ESPN projects Michael Mayer as most likely pick for Saints at No. 29

An ESPN analytical model projects Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer as the most likely pick for the New Orleans Saints at No. 29 in the 2023 draft:

Everyone seems to have a take on the 2023 NFL draft, and now the computers are getting involved. According to this ESPN analytical model, the likeliest pick for the New Orleans Saints at No. 29 is Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer. Here is how ESPN describes its model:

The underlying model is based on prospect grades from Scouts Inc, expert mock drafts, and team needs along with a few other factors. The Predictor considers these factors in proportion to how accurate they have been in the past.

Mayer would make a lot of sense for the Saints, even if he doesn’t boast an elite Relative Athletic Score and would expect Juwan Johnson to remain ahead of him on the depth chart. He’s one of the best blocking tight ends in this draft class with experience handling a wide variety of assignments, but he’s also a serious receiving threat who posted some of college football’s best numbers on contested catches. He could help the Saints in multiple phases offensively.

ESPN’s model approximates a 48% chance of Mayer being available when the Saints are on the clock, and a 7% chance that New Orleans would actually pick him. But he isn’t their only option. Here are the other names to watch according to ESPN’s mathematicians:

Dan Campbell’s in-game decisions and clock management ranked in the top 3

Campbell’s decision on 4th downs, clock management and play calls ranked 3rd of all coaches in added win probability in 2022

Dan Campbell took a lot of heat from fans for some of his in-game decisions and clock management during the 2022 season. Most analytics backed Campbell and his questionable choices, however.

The Lions coach based much of his methodology on analytics and data analysis, notably on when to go for it on fourth down and in managing the clock at the end of halves. Not surprisingly, Campbell’s decisions earned the Lions tremendous value in the “win probability added” metric.

Per analytics site SumerSports, Campbell’s in-game choices gave the Lions the third-most win probability added over expectation. Only Nick Sirianni of the Eagles and Sean McDermott of the Bills augmented their teams’ chances of winning with in-game coaching decisions more than Campbell did for Detroit.

As noted in a follow-up tweet, the calculations here are only about the in-game decisions on timeouts, fourth downs and play calls. It doesn’t deal with talent and perceived achievement relative to the talent on the team.

The decisions didn’t always work for Campbell, but that’s where the talent on the team and execution come into play.

Comparing Pac-12 preseason win-loss projections to final records in 2022

How did each Pac-12 team do according to preseason projections? We went back to see if ESPN analytics got it right.

I’d be the last one to say I understand all of these analytics that have come into the sports world in the last five seasons. I barely passed trigonometry when I was in high school.

So when ESPN says its Football Power Index, “measures a team’s true strength on a net point scale; expected point margin vs. opponent on a neutral field,” they might as well be speaking Romulan. All we need to know is who’s favored and why. Of course, the end result is important as well.

Before the season started, ESPN’s FPI basically laid out who was going to be good and who was going to stink it up. They mostly got it right, but there are a few cases where the team performed better than expected.

Here is how each Pac-12 team was projected to finish and how they actually fared at the end of the season.

Myles Garrett is really good, in case you need more evidence

In case you need more evidence that Myles Garrett has been one of the best players in the league this year, here you go!

Myles Garrett has been with the Cleveland Browns for so long now, what he does on a week-to-week basis has begun to look mundane. He did it again in the Monday Night Football win over the Cincinnati Bengals as well, racking up another 1.5 sacks, including another spectacular spin move sack.

ESPN’s Seth Walder continues to bring insightful data to the forefront as well, as he charts pass rush win rate and double team rate of every edge rusher. And there are only two at the top: Dallas Cowboys’ Micah Parsons and Garrett. Leading the league in double-team rate, Garrett still sits second in the league in win rate, just behind Parsons. There is nobody even close to them at the top.

As he gets set to take on Terron Armstead and the Miami Dolphins after the bye week, the Browns will need another superhuman effort from Garrett to help keep their season afloat.

Browns LT Jedrick Wills leads all tackles in Pass Block Win Rate

The Browns have seen significant improvements out of Jedrick Wills in 2022

Left tackle Jedrick Wills has been the subject of much discourse over his two-and-a-half years with the Cleveland Browns thus far. After being selected 10th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, many expected Wills to be a stalwart left tackle with no struggles in his game.

Despite being an adequate and capable player, many have called for him to be replaced. This year, however, Wills is among the best left tackles in football, and even falls at the top of the leaderboard in Pass Block Win Rate according to ESPN. Sitting with a 97 percent win rate, Wills stands atop Rashawn Slater (who is currently on Injured Reserve), Tristan Wirfs, Lane Johnson, and Laremy Tunsil.

Jedrick Wills Cleveland Browns

To add even more intrigue, right tackle Jack Conklin sits ninth on the list as well. The Browns have had their issues this season, but their pass protection up front has been the least of their worries.

Myles Garrett faces more double teams than any other edge rusher

Myles Garrett DOES impact games for the Cleveland Browns and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Through all of the defensive dysfunction shown by the Cleveland Browns, even Myles Garrett has been caught in the crossfire by media personalities and fans alike. Some individuals do not think Garrett is doing enough for this football team despite returning to the field just one week after getting into a significant car accident.

Just read the replies to this tweet by Jon Ledyard as there are plenty complaining about Garrett:

“He doesn’t impact games.”
“No sacks since Week 2 is unacceptable.”
“He is overrated.”
“The Browns need to trade him before his value sinks.”

These are all things that have been found on the internet despite Garrett already racking up 20 pressures in just four games, as he is dominating offensive tackles each week. His tape and the data that spills out based on that tape continue to tell a different story each week. Too many people are too concerned about reading box scores rather than turning on the actual tape.

In reality, Garrett is seeing the highest rate of double teams of any pass rusher in the NFL and is still winning his reps at the rate of the top pass rushers in the league. Yet when there is no threat from the interior, opposing guards do not even have to glance opposite of Garrett, as the star pass rusher is getting chipped and blanketed every pass rush snap.

Sacks are the sexy stat but are never a reliable metric for evaluating defensive linemen. Instead, look at how often Justin Herbert was flushed out of the pocket a week ago, the number of times he is getting pressure on opposing quarterbacks, and more importantly, how often the two men next to him are getting any penetration at all.

When those box score blinders come off, reality sets in. And the reality is that Myles Garrett could not be doing anything more for this team than he is already doing.

Quite frankly, what more could you want out of Garrett?

Know thy Enemy: How do the Browns stack up vs. Chargers?

As the Browns look to rebound, how do they stack up against the Los Angeles Chargers?

For the second straight season, the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Chargers are set to square off. This time, however, the Chargers are going to be the team traveling across the country to meet the Browns at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Both teams come into the game with a record of 2-2, as the Chargers are coming in off of a win over the Houston Texans. The Browns will be looking to stay in the mix over the next seven games after falling to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 4.

Here we will take a look at how the Chargers look in all phases of the game, and how the Browns match up with them. Spoilers: I tend to think this game is going to be much tighter than many imagine.

Despite outcry, Browns offense is excellent on 4th down conversions

Despite the outcry, the Cleveland Browns offense has been excellent on 4th down conversions

Whether it is liked by the fanbase or not, the Cleveland Browns are not going to stop going for it on 4th down. And they have good reason to stick with their process because they are quite good at it and they know it. The players love it, the analytics guys within the organization love it, and the 4th down attempts are not going to slow down.

Thus far in 2022, the Browns are tied for sixth in the NFL in 4th down conversions, executing on 66.67 percent of their attempts. On nine attempts this season, the Browns have converted six of them. This is a big step up from a year ago (gazes at the quarterback in Carolina), as the Browns converted just 41 percent of their attempts in 2021.

Using a full season’s worth of data a year ago, only the New England Patriots tallied a higher mark than what the Browns are currently toating through the first four games of the season. The average 4th down conversion rate a year ago was just under 52 percent as well. Over the past two seasons, the Browns are a total of 7-of-13 in the opposition’s redzone on 4th down as well.

This is a bet the Browns are willing to make every single time.

“We’re an aggressive offense. Stuff like that excites me. We’re not afraid to put it all on the line.” -TE David Njoku (via Mary Kay Cabot)

This is in their nature, their identity. They are a process-driven team, and Stefanski has said as much. The Browns are not going to compromise on that as it has been a staple of the Stefanski era thus far.

And they have no reason to despite a failed attempt on their opening drive against the Falcons.

Browns offense still top-five in Expected Points Added despite down game

The Browns still have an offense that remains near the top of the league.

This NFL season has been wild. And as a result, three teams starting bridge quarterbacks find themselves in the top-five in offensive efficiency (particularly Expected Points Added). One of those teams is the Cleveland Browns, who currently sit with the fourth-highest offensive EPA in the entire league.

The showing against the Atlanta Falcons was certainly a step down offensively from what they were able to accomplish against the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers, but they were still able to run the ball at will. At a minimum, the Browns’ passing offense has been serviceable as quarterback Jacoby Brissett has played at an acceptable level.

His play is going to be volatile, but the Browns’ offense continues to do enough to put the team in position to win football games.
