Notre Dame falls in final Amway Coaches Poll

The final Amway Coaches Poll sees Notre Dame drop, but still have end up with a very high ranking.

With the bowl season officially concluding last night and Alabama being crowned champion once again for the sixth time in the last 12 years, the coaches had a chance to examine what they saw. The final Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports saw the Irish drop one spot from No. 4 to No. 5.

It was obvious that the loss to Alabama made in impact on them, but in reality it shouldn’t have. Although Notre Dame only managed to score 14 points against the eventual national champions, they held them to their lowest point total of the season, 31.

Throughout the season, Brian Kelly’s team never fell out of the top 10, with their highest rating being No. 2 and lowest was No. 10. A final record of 10-2 showed they were one of the best teams in the country.

Alabama rightfully received every single 1st place vote, while their combatants in the title game, Ohio State finished second. Clemson was third and Texas A&M rounded out the top 5.

Here is the final Amway Coaches Poll with the ACC teams in bold and the last rankings in parenthesis.

Notre Dame firmly behind No. 1 Alabama in latest Amway Coaches Poll

The latest Amway Coaches Poll sees a little movement inside the Top 10, but plenty later on.

Notre Dame concluded their first regular season as a conference member by going undefeated in the ACC, expelling all the chatter about how the Irish would do if they had to go through a conference schedule. The win 45-21 win against Syracuse might seem like a blowout, but the first half left plenty to be desired out of the remaining No. 2 team in the country according to the latest Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports

In a week after the Irish gained ground in votes to No. 1 Alabama, they stayed exactly the same as last weeks poll.

Around the ACC, No. 3 Clemson struggled early against Virginia Tech, but eventually took over in the second half like the Irish did and won 45-10. They remained at No. 3 while No. 10 Miami, FL blasted Duke 48-0 and No. 17 North Carolina did the same to Western Carolina 49-9.

In other movement around the Top 25, No. 8 BYU lost to No. 14 Coastal Carolina, 22-17 in a thriller. Indiana got a huge win over No. 16 Wisconsin, one week after losing their star quarterback Michael Penix for the season, confirming the Hoosiers No. 11 ranking. Four more upsets, No. 15 Marshall,  No. 18 Oklahoma State, No. 20 Oregon and No. 23 Washington all lost to unranked opponents.

Notre Dame inches closer to No. 1 Alabama in latest Amway Coaches Poll

The updated Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports doesn’t see much change inside the top 10.

Notre Dame headed to Chapel Hill in what many called a trap game against former No. 23 North Carolina. That’s exactly what it wasn’t, as the Irish continued their impressive run of play, staying undefeated in winning 31-17 over the Tar Heels.

That win was enough to catch some attention in the latest Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports as the Irish didn’t move up, but garnered more votes than they did last week.

Around the ACC, No. 4 Clemson saw the return of all-world quarterback Trevor Lawrence and blew out Pittsburgh, 52-17. Miami, FL, the No. 9 team,  the only other conference team ranked inside the Amway Coaches Poll.

Nationally, No. 13 Northwestern was upended in East Lansing, falling the Michigan State 29-20, giving them their first loss of the year. Iowa State, ranked No. 15, continues it’s impressive run as they defeated No. 21Texas in Memorial Stadium, 23-20. Oregon State upended No. 11 Oregon in their unnamed rivalry game, 41-38 on Friday night. No. 1 Alabama blew out their rivals No. 19 Auburn, 42-13, with head coach Nick Saban watching from home as he tested positive for COVID-19 this week.

Former No. 3 Ohio State dropped one spot after having their game against Illinois canceled due to a spread of COVID-19 this week. It was Clemson’s gain here, as they now hold the same ranking in the College Football Playoff rankings.

Here is the updated Coaches Poll, with ACC teams in bold and last weeks ranking in parenthesis.

Notre Dame still sitting pretty in latest Amway Coaches Poll

Even with a bye week, Notre Dame doesn’t lose ground on No. 1 Alabama.

It was a week where there wasn’t much movement at all inside the top 10, just Indiana fell out after falling to Ohio State in a thrilling 45-38 loss, although they didn’t fall far, just two spots to No. 12.

The top 5 teams remained the same, Alabama still No. 1 with the Irish, Ohio State, Clemson and Florida rounding out to the top 5. The biggest riser this week was Northwestern, as they defeated Wisconsin at home and they look like they’re they favorites to win the Big Ten West.

The Badgers and Oklahoma State both took big hits to their rankings, they each fell 8 spots after their respective losses.

Around the ACC, North Carolina State defeated formerly No. 22 Liberty, as the loss knocked them out of the Coaches Poll entirely. That was it for the conference’s ranked games, as No. 4 Clemson vs. Florida State and No. 9 Miami, FL vs. Georgia Tech were both postponed this weekend. No. 23 North Carolina, like Notre Dame, had a bye this weekend.

Florida Gators sit, slip a spot in Week 8 of Amway Coaches Poll

Florida Gators football lost some ground in one of the latest polls after another COVID-19 bye weekend and the Big Ten starting its season.

[jwplayer GHlwpr8W-er0jUifI]

Another week of college football is in the books and with the Big Ten joining the national action this week, the sports world continues to move on without the Florida Gators, who sat on the sidelines for the second Saturday in a row after a COVID-19 outbreak shut the team down.

The latest Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports for Week 8 was published on Sunday with the Gators remaining in the top 10, but moving one spot down in the rankings to No. 9 after the Texas A&M Aggies leapfrogged into the eighth spot with a 28-14 win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

The Clemson Tigers maintained their dominance in the poll, retaining the top spot for the eighth-straight week this fall while the Alabama Crimson Tide retained their second-place perch for the same length of time. The Ohio State Buckeyes move from fifth to third after a shellacking of the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the first week of Big Ten play, leaving the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Georgia Bulldogs to close out the top 5, respectively.

The Southeastern Conference features four of the top 10 teams in the nation this week — which also represents the league’s total number of member schools in the Coaches Poll top 25. The Auburn Tigers, Arkansas Razorbacks, Missouri Tigers and Tennessee Volunteers all received votes but remain on the outside looking in.

Here are the complete poll results from Week 8.

Good news for the Florida Gators in latest Amway Coaches Poll

Florida’s game vs LSU was postponed but UF still managed to hop up a spot in the latest Amway Coaches Poll while many of the SEC saw a slide

The Florida Gators got some good news on Sunday despite sitting the weekend out — and next weekend as well — due to a coronavirus outbreak on the team. According to the latest update to the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports, UF moved up one spot from No. 9 to No. 8 after college football’s Week 7 action.

Three other Southeastern Conference teams sit in the latest top-10, including Texas A&M, who jumped two spots to take the No. 9 position right behind the Gators. Despite a loss to the second-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, the Georgia Bulldogs dropped only one notch to No. 4 — switching places with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish — giving the SEC two of the top-4 teams in the nation.

However, this past weekend was otherwise a tumultuous one for the conference’s middle-of-the-pack teams, with the Auburn Tigers and the Tennessee Volunteers dropping from No. 14 and No. 17, respectively, out of the polls, leaving the league with only the four aforementioned member schools in the top-25.

The complete rankings from Week 7 of college football play are posted below.
