Lions, Dan Campbell honor Oxford HS after victory over the Vikings

The Detroit Lions and coach Dan Campbell honor the Oxford HS victims after Sunday’s victory over the Vikings

The Detroit Lions players quickly rewarded head coach Dan Campbell with the game ball after his first coaching win on Sunday. But Campbell had a better idea for the ball. He dedicated the win and the game ball to the Detroit suburb of Oxford, which suffered a terrible mass shooting at the high school this week.

Campbell made sure to honor the victims and the Oxford community at the beginning of his postgame press conference.

“I want us to not forget these names,” Campbell said, as he read the names of the students and teacher who were shot on Monday. That list began with the four students who were killed: Madisyn Baldwin, Hana St. Juliana, Justin Shilling, and Tate Myre.

“For all those—they’ll never be forgotten, they’re in our hearts and our prayers, and all the families—not to mention all those that were affected by all of this,” Campbell said. “The classmates, the brothers and sisters, the cousins, the teachers—everybody.”

The Lions wore special decals on their helmets honoring Oxford. The head coach of the football team at the high school, Zach Line, played under Campbell as a fullback in New Orleans.

Quarterback Jared Goff and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, the two who connected on the game-winning touchdown pass as time expired in Detroit’s win over Minnesota, also began their postgame press conferences by dedicating the win to Oxford.

“I’ll try not to get emotional but—you know, sometimes special things happen in special circumstances,” Goff said. “I think you saw yesterday what Michigan did against Iowa and then us today getting our first win in what is it, 12, 13 weeks. You never hope for a tragedy like this, but you hope to be a light for those people and a positive thing that they can have fun watching today. I hope that they were all watching today and were able to enjoy that win, and we can take their minds off it for whatever it may be, three hours. I think anytime we can do that, it’s a lot bigger than our sport, it’s a lot bigger than us. I think that today is one of those special circumstances that we were able to rise to the occasion and make something special happen.”

St. Brown echoed the sentiment,

“Before I start, I just want to give a shoutout to the Oxford Community. You know it’s been a tough, tough week for everyone. But to go out there and get our first win, at home, I think was just a blessing in disguise. I mean, I think it was the best way to end this week I feel like.”

Tight end Brock Wright also paid respect to Oxford in his postgame presser. Wright, an undrafted rookie from Notre Dame, scored his first career touchdown in the first half of the 29-27 win.

“It’s so special for us to be able to do this. Obviously, we heard about the tragic events the other day and knew that we’d be able to do a little bit of something, try and bring a little bit of joy to the families today. And so being a part of that means a lot to me and means a lot to the rest of the team as well. So, just happy we could get a win for them and our thoughts and prayers go out to the families at this time, of course.”

Well done, Lions.

Play of the game: Amon-Ra St. Brown secures the first win for Lions

Rookie WR Amon-Ra St. Brown makes the play of the game to lead the Lions to victory

In true Detroit Lions fashion, the team was able to just barely come out victorious on a last-second touchdown.

This rollercoaster of a game featured several huge plays on both offense and defense that would have been worthy of the ‘Play of the Game’ title if this were any other day for the Lions. Of course, with four seconds left on the clock, one play would decide whether the 0-10-1 Lions would walk away with their first victory or go on another week being winless.

It’s fourth-and-two. Down four points. Four seconds left. 11 yards to go. Jared Goff is 8-of-13 for 72 yards on this drive and it’s a no-brainer that they’ll attempt another pass here.

The Lions come out in the shotgun formation with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Kalif Raymond, and T.J. Hockenson in trips on one side and Josh Reynolds as the sole receiver on the other. Jamaal Williams is in the backfield.

The ball is snapped. Williams initially moves into pass protection before cutting out for a short comeback route behind the line of scrimmage. All four receivers run vertical routes deep and just try to get separation.

Reynolds and Hockenson are each met with double coverage. Raymond gets jammed up by the Vikings defender and fails to get open. The rookie St. Brown makes a smart move and sits on the route, faking out the two defensive backs and giving him some room to make a play.

With two seconds left on the clock, Jared Goff gets the ball out, intended for St. Brown. The rookie’s heads-up play opened up some space between him and the Viking defenders couldn’t close in on time. Touchdown!

St. Brown is immediately swarmed by teammates as the entire sideline rushes onto the field to celebrate the rookie’s remarkable catch that handed the Lions their first win of the season.

As this is both his first career touchdown and first win as a professional football player, this will surely be something St. Brown will remember for the rest of his life.

Detroit Lions vs. Minnesota Vikings: Everything we know

Breaking down the keys to victory, stats, stars and more from the Lions 29-27 win over the Vikings

For the first time since Week 13 of the 2020 season, the Detroit Lions have won a game. It took until Week 13 of 2021, but the Lions finally secured the first victory of the Dan Campbell era as the team’s head coach with a 29-27 win thanks to a go-ahead touchdown on the last play of the game.

The thrilling comeback erased what was otherwise a forgettable second half for Detroit. The Lions raced out to a 20-6 halftime lead behind strong play from both QB Jared Goff and the young defense. Minnesota turned the tables in the second half and surged into a late 27-23 lead with under 90 seconds to play, but the Lions triumphantly answered the challenge.

Lions pull off the comeback, score last-second TD to beat the Vikings

Lions rookie WR Amon-Ra St. Brown’s defensive play made first win of season possible

It took a defensive play for the Lions to get their first win of the season. The defensive play came from Detroit receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.

It took a lot longer than anybody in Detroit wanted, but the Lions managed to pull away with their first win of the 2021 season on Sunday when Jared Goff hit rookie receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown for an 11-yard touchdown pass with no time left on the clock, and the Vikings fell, 29-27.

It was entirely appropriate that St. Brown, the brother of Packers receiver Equanimeous St. Brown, had the game-winning touchdown catch, because were it not for his efforts a few plays before on the deciding drive, Goff would have thrown an easy pick to Minnesota cornerback Bashaud Breeland.

On the play, which happened with 22 seconds left in the game from the Minnesota-yard line, Goff missed a late backside blitz from safety Harrison Smith, who pressured Goff into throwing up a duck into the end zone, Only St. Brown’s efforts to essentially track and play the ball like a defender would saved the drive, and eventually, the win.

Thrilling radio call as Lions win first game on last-second touchdown pass

The Detroit Lions with a miraculous victory over the Minnesota Vikings

The Detroit Lions did everything they could to give away a game Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. And in the end, they couldn’t.

Dan Campbell has his first win as an NFL head coach in an improbable fashion.

The Lions blew a 20-6 halftime lead, fell behind by four, only to have Jared Goff hit Amon-Ra St. Brown with an 11-yard touchdown pass on the final play to give Detroit a 29-27 victory.

The radio calls were, um, different from each side.

The celebration was on as Detroit went from 0-10-1 to 1-10-1 and still was in position for the No. 1 pick in 2022.

Twitter had its say, of course:

This is sort of a fair turnabout as the Lions lost to the Vikings in their first meeting on a 54-yard field goal by Greg Joseph as time ran out.

Lions Wire fantasy football weekly: 2021 Week 13 preview

Breaking down the Week 13 fantasy football options

Timeout. Timeout. Oh wait, that would be a penalty that might cost you a win in the NFL but we need a double timeout to discuss some very impactful fantasy football injuries.

Last week the following players were injured which probably cost many fantasy owners a win: Christian McCaffrey (RB Panthers), Dalvin Cook (RB Vikings), D’Andre Swift (RB Lions), and others.

The fantasy playoffs are around the corner and these injuries have created a sense of pause and panic across all fantasy leagues. The backups for those injured running backs and other depth players will determine fantasy championships these next few weeks.

Lions vs Vikings fantasy focus

Speaking of timeouts, injuries, and depth that brings up this matchup where the Minnesota Vikings are traveling to Detroit to face the Lions. No D’Andre Swift and no Dalvin Cook will be a severe blow to each team.

The Vikings seem to have the offensive firepower to make up for that loss of Cook at running back, but it doesn’t appear the Lions have those same replacement quality players on their side. Who can account for this loss best will go a long way to determining who wins this matchup.

Fantasy players to focus on in this matchup for the Lions would be Jamaal Williams (RB), T.J. Hockenson (TE), Josh Reynolds (WR), and Amon Ra St. Brown (WR). The Vikings key fantasy players will feature Justin Jefferson (WR), Alexander Mattison (RB), and Adam Thielen (WR).

Expect this one to be a potentially lopsided game in favor of the Vikings. Detroit is still searching for their first win and they would love to get that in front of the home fans at Ford Field. Jared Goff will have to play better than he ever has as quarterback for the Lions to help them find a win. These teams are familiar and the outcome might again be familiar on Sunday when this one is all said and done.

Bottom Line

There are no timeouts in fantasy football. There also are no substitutions when one of your top players gets hurt early in the game. You have to fight through it in fantasy football and hope some of your other players help with that next fantasy player up type mentality.

When a top NFL player goes down for a team, they have to scramble to look for a replacement or hope that the next man on the depth chart can compensate for the loss. The Detroit Lions will have to do that by hoping Jamaal Williams can carry the load while D’Andre Swift is out.

How will you replace your top players that are hurt headed into the fantasy playoffs? First, look at your current roster and see if you have a suitable replacement on your depth chart. If not, you are going to have to scramble to try to find someone that can help you overcome. No timeouts, no way to avoid injuries, but there still are many ways to win both in the NFL and in the fantasy football playoffs.

Lions rookie report for the Week 12 loss to the Chicago Bears

How did Penei Sewell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jerry Jacobs and the other Lions rookies fare in the Thanksgiving loss to Chicago

While this season is likely to go down as one of the worst in franchise history, Detroit Lions fans can find solace in the fact that the 2021 rookie class is performing well.

The offensive line featured two rookie starters, first-round pick Penei Sewell and undrafted free agent Tommy Kraemer. While Sewell has still not allowed a sack in six games, he did break a different streak. The rookie, who has not committed a penalty in over a month, had a false start and two holding calls against him that severely impacted the offense’s momentum.

Kraemer looked decent in his first career start. Filling in for an injured Halapoulivaati Vaitai at right guard, the rookie excelled at creating holes in the run game and didn’t allow a sack. Unfortunately, he wasn’t immune to whatever was causing the offensive line to commit so many penalties, as he was flagged for holding twice against Chicago.

Wide receiver Amon-St. Brown emerged as the true number-one guy for Detroit. The rookie from USC took the field for all but one of the Lions’ offensive snaps and caught all four of the passes that came his way. He flashed his versatility as well as he was used plenty as a slot receiver while also lining up on the outside at times.

On defense, both Alim McNeill and Levi Onwuzurike saw the field for about a third of the team’s snaps. Onwuzurike recorded his first career sack, but neither rookie lineman created much pressure up front. Their defense against the run was formidable, however. The two combined for five tackles, one going for a loss.

Linebacker Derrick Barnes had a very up-and-down day. Barnes had a very limited role on defense and failed to make much of an impact when he was on the field. He made one very impressive play late in the game where he made a tackle for loss, but followed that up on the next snap by messing up the coverage and allowing a first-down from tight end Cole Kmet.

In the secondary, Jerry Jacobs never came off the field on defense and came away with five tackles and one very nice pass breakup. He has been a pleasant surprise as a starter at cornerback over the past few games for the Lions.

[listicle id=69653]

Kicker Riley Patterson suited up for his first NFL game and was perfect, making two of two extra point attempts. The Lions never took the opportunity to try a field goal, but Patterson did hit one from as far as 60 yards during pre-game warmups.

Rookies Jermar Jefferson, Ryan McCollum and Mark Gilbert all took snaps in this game but had very little to contribute.

D’Andre Swift, Penei Sewell earn top PFF grades in Lions loss to the Browns

D’Andre Swift, Penei Sewell earn the top PFF grades in Lions loss to the Browns in Week 11

It might seem odd that Pro Football Focus graded six Detroit Lions offensive players better than anyone on the Detroit defense in the Week 11 loss to the Cleveland Browns. The Lions lost 13-10 and didn’t crack 100 passing yards in the latest loss, after all. But the grading highlights the relative importance of context.

The Lions run game performed quite well for the second game in a row. And while the defense did a fair job, poor offensive play from Baker Mayfield and the Browns offense was more culpable in why Cleveland only scored 13 than the Lions defense.

PFF took a shine to the Lions toughness, run game and blocking. RB D’Andre Swift earned the top grade at 83.1 overall, a figure bolstered by an 86.1 run grade.

The rest of the top-graded Lions from Week 11:

  • RT Penei Sewell – 81.1
  • WR Amon-Ra St Brown – 75.3
  • TE Brock Wright – 71.3
  • C Evan Brown – 69.6
  • TE T.J. Hockenson – 69.4

They all graded out better than the top defensive player, LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin, who earned a 68.6 overall grade.

At the other end of the spectrum, these were the five lowest-graded Lions:

  • LB Alex Anzalone – 29.0
  • LB Derrick Barnes – 29.7
  • S Tracy Walker – 38.0
  • CB Amani Oruwariye – 43.8
  • QB Tim Boyle – 44.6

Lions Wire fantasy football weekly: 2021 Week 11 preview

Our Derek Okrie breaks down the week in fantasy football and the Browns vs. Lions matchups

The focus is always to win in fantasy football. We all know that you are going to take some losses at times too, but have you ever experienced that fantasy football matchup which goes down to the final play and then it ends in a tie?

Lions at Browns fantasy focus

The Detroit Lions played very hard last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but when the game clock expired in overtime and the battle ended the scoreboard reflected a tied score for both teams. The Lions don’t have the same hope that a fantasy football player might have where that tie could be broken days later due to a minor statistical correction or adjustment. The Lions didn’t win, they didn’t lose, they tied.

As odd as that feeling is to tie, they have to rebound against a beat-up Cleveland Browns team this week. D’Andre Swift was a fantasy football monster last week with 130 rushing yards. He will be needed again facing a tough Browns defense.

The fantasy issue continues to be the passing game for the Lions. T.J. Hockenson put up a goose egg in every receiving category on Sunday and only got one target his way during the entire game plus overtime. He has to find a way to be more dynamic and impactful across the board.

The big question marks on this game in regards to injuries lie with the Browns. Baker Mayfield (QB), Nick Chubb (RB), Kareem Hunt (RB), and Jarvis Landry (WR) are all dealing with injuries or COVID and their participation or lack thereof could have a tremendous impact on this game.

Two teams that are often laughed at by the rest of the NFL face off this week in Cleveland. Based on the injuries and uncertainties, put most of your fantasy players on the bench in this one and avoid this matchup as much as you can.

  • TB: Tom Brady (QB), Chris Godwin (WR)

Bottom Line

Most trade deadlines in fantasy leagues have passed, so you have who you have as your main players on your route to a fantasy football championship. You still need to work that waiver wire until the final week though to improve depth and manage the substantial amount of injuries that happen each and every week.

Patrick Mahomes (QB Chiefs), Christian McCaffrey (RB Panthers), and Saquon Barkley (RB Giants) will all be back on the field this week after rebounding from subpar play or injury. Watching the elite players play the game they love is alway fun aspect to enjoy when it comes to fantasy football.

Oh yeah, and one more thing.

Every true competition should have a winner and a loser. We can’t have a tie at the end. It doesn’t seem right and it doesn’t feel right. That seems like something more suited for European Futbol and not the NFL Football that we all love. It is never something to be happy about when you get a tie in a crucial fantasy football matchup in your league, but the Lions will take it though based on how their season has gone and all things considered.

Lions vs. Steelers: Best and worst PFF grades from Week 10

Here are this week’s PFF best and worst performances for the Detroit Lions week 10 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers

It wasn’t exactly the performance the Detroit Lions were hoping for coming out their bye. Still, after one of the most unappealing, uncompetitive games you will ever watch, the Lions mustered out a 16-16 tie against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

If there was ever a game where neither team deserved to claim victory, it was most certainly this one where each team was doing everything in their power to lose this week. The Lions offense became predictable real quick, and once the Steelers were able to solve that issue, it was all over for them. On the flip side of the defense, they did put in a solid effort, but when you are facing Mason Rudolph on the other side, it can be difficult to judge how well the players are performing.

The performances speak for themselves, and with the latest PFF grades from this matchup, it almost lines up with how you would anticipate from this week.
