Social media reacts to Commanders’ embarrassing performance thus far vs. Bears

Social media has been much more entertaining than the on-field product.

The Washington Commanders have had some stinkers over the years. However, their first-half performance against the Chicago Bears on Thursday Night Football could be among the worst in franchise history.

The Bears rolled up 307 yards of total offense against the Commanders in the first half en route to a 27-3 lead. Remember when the defense was supposed to be a team strength?

Let’s add some context here as to why this first half has been so abysmal for the Commanders: The Bears haven’t won a game since Oct. 2022.

While the game itself was dreadful, social media was a lot more interesting. Let’s look at some of the best reactions regarding Washington’s ugly first half.

Bears blowing out Commanders 27-3 at halftime

What an embarrassing display of football.

The Chicago Bears are embarrassing the Washington Commanders 27-3 at halftime of their Week 5 game on Thursday Night Football.

The Bears jumped out to an early lead when quarterback Justin Fields connected with wide receiver D.J. Moore on a 20-yard touchdown pass.

Washington went three-and-out on both of its first two possessions while the Bears kept scoring touchdowns. Fields found Moore for another touchdown, this time from 11 yards out, to give Chicago a 17-0 lead.

The Commanders didn’t pick up their first first down until early in the second quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, it looked like the Commanders may finally strike, but quarterback Sam Howell missed a wide-open Dyami Brown in the end zone. Washington settled for a 51-yard field goal from Joey Slye.

The Bears kicked another field to go up 20-3. Howell was intercepted on the next possession, and Fields later found tight end Cole Kmet for his third touchdown pass of the night to give Chicago a 27-3 lead.

The Commanders have allowed 307 total yards in the first half. Fields has completed 12 of 20 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns. Chicago rushed for 122 yards, averaging almost seven yards per attempt.

Meanwhile, Howell completed nine of 13 passes for 71 yards with an interception. Terry McLaurin has one catch for three yards.

Washington will open the second half with the football.

WATCH: Commanders vs. Bears Thursday night preview from NFL.com

The Commanders or the Bears? NFL.com weighs in.

The NFL announced a Thursday night game between the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders for the second consecutive season. While these are two of the more historic NFL franchises, neither team has been overly successful in recent years.

Last season’s Thursday night game was ugly, with the Commanders pulling away with a 12-7 win.

Washington (2-2) is coming off a 34-31 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Meanwhile, the Bears (0-4) remain winless after blowing a 21-point lead to the Denver Broncos.

What happens this time around?

NFL.com previewed this Sunday’s matchup.

NFL Week 5 picks: Who the experts are taking in Commanders vs. Bears

The Commanders don’t often respond well as overwhelming favorites. Will this be different?

Can the Washington Commanders (2-2) snap a two-game losing streak on Thursday Night Football against the Chicago Bears (0-4)?

Both teams head into Thursday night looking to bounce back from disappointing losses. The Commanders fell in overtime to one of the NFL’s best teams, the Philadelphia Eagles, while the Bears blew a 21-point second-half lead in a loss to the Denver Broncos.

This is a rematch of the Week 6 version of Thursday Night Football from one year ago. That game was more known for Washington head coach Ron Rivera’s postgame rant than the action on the field. The action on the field resulted in a 12-7 Commanders’ victory.

A lot has changed since that time, something Rivera acknowledged this week.

So, who wins? Rivera’s current team, or the franchise in which he played all nine of his NFL seasons?

The experts have spoken, and 95% of the experts are riding with the Commanders on Thursday night, according to NFL Pickwatch.

This is a different feeling for Washington, who is often on the other side of these predictions. In past years, the Commanders were disappointed when they were big favorites.

Will that happen again on Thursday?

Is this a trap game for the Commanders? It may be too early to call this a trap game, but this game will be a lot closer than most believe.

How to watch Commanders vs. Bears: Time, TV and streaming options for Week 5

All the info you need to watch or listen to the Commanders’ Week 5 game vs. the Bears.

The Washington Commanders try to snap a two-game losing streak on Thursday Night Football against the visiting Chicago Bears.

Washington is coming off a heartbreaking 34-31 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Bears are coming off a heartbreaker of their own, blowing a 28-7 lead before falling to the Denver Broncos 31-28.

These two historic NFL franchises met on Thursday Night Football last season in one of the ugliest prime-time games of the season. Washington prevailed, 12-7, in what would be quarterback Carson Wentz’s second-to-last start for the Commanders. Taylor Heinicke would take over under center the following week, and the Commanders would go on a run to get into playoff contention before falling apart late.

A lot has changed for Washington since that time. For one, the Commanders have a new ownership group, led by managing partner Josh Harris, that includes NBA legend Magic Johnson.

Here is everything you need to know to watch, listen to, or stream the Week 5 battle between the Commanders and the Bears.

Al Michaels wondered why TNF still showed shots of San Francisco because it’s so far away

Technically, the 49ers don’t play in San Francisco, so he’s got a point!

They’re called the San Francisco 49ers, but they don’t actually play within the city limits of San Francisco. Their stadium resides in Santa Clara, California, which is approximately 43 miles south of The Golden City. At this point, though, it just makes more sense — semantically, anyway — to call them the San Francisco 49ers. After all, the Dallas Cowboys play in Arlington, but no one questions that.

Al Michaels might not agree with this sentiment.

As Thursday’s broadcast of the 49ers’ home matchup with the New York Giants returned from commercial late in the game, it showed a bunch of lovely aerial shots of San Francisco. Here, Michaels veered off script and openly questioned why they were still showing San Francisco because it’s “44 miles away.”

Folks, technically, he’s not wrong!

As a person who doesn’t love when the NFL moves teams out of cities that adored them into overpriced suburban stadiums, I’m all for this. I would love for more announcers like Michaels to call out this weird discrepancy. If only more broadcasters broke Football Guy character and told it like it is under these circumstances.
