Wearing their Sunday best: Saints announce first uniform combo of 2020

The New Orleans Saints will wear black home jerseys and matching black pants in their Week 1 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Make sure to follow the dress code, even if you’re watching from home: the New Orleans Saints announced that they will be wearing black home jerseys with matching black pants in their Sunday kickoff against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, going with their most-common uniform combination from the 2019 season.

The Saints went 5-2 in the black-on-black look a year ago, so they’ll be hoping to recapture some of that same success in their season opener. Superstitious fans put a lot of faith in these sort of things, so here is how the win-loss record shook out for each combo in 2019:

  1. “Color Rush” alternates: 3-0 (1.000)
  2. White jerseys, white pants: 5-1 (.833)
  3. Black jerseys, black pants: 5-2 (.714)
  4. Black jerseys, gold pants: 0-1 (.000)

And for the curious: here are the total win-loss records for each uniform combination worn back to 2006 (except for the funky gold jerseys worn during a 2002 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, which Cameron Jordan wants to try out):

  1. White jerseys, white pants: 5-1 (.833)
  2. “Color Rush” alternates: 6-2 (.750)
  3. “Black and Gold” throwbacks: 2-1 (.667)
  4. Black jerseys, gold pants: 23-13 (.639)
  5. White jerseys, black pants: 38-25 (.603)
  6. Black jerseys, black pants: 41-27 (.603)
  7. White jerseys, gold pants: 31-24 (.564)

Alabama football: Ranking the top 5 uniform concepts

The Alabama jerseys have stayed the same for a while, but what could they look like if they changed? We rank the top 5 concepts we’ve seen.

Alabama football has worn the same uniforms, with slight variations over time, for decades. The Crimson Tide has worn white helmets in the 1960s, which included a houndstooth design in the jersey. But that idea only lasted for one game.

Head coach Nick Saban even chimed in on the idea of changing jerseys during a 2019 press conference.

“I don’t think the coach should change uniforms. I don’t think the coach should change the color of the helmets. I just don’t believe that. Now that doesn’t mean that’s wrong when somebody does that or they think they should do it or whatever.”

So, if the uniforms won’t be facing any drastic changes in the coming years, what’s stopping fans from imagining what any of those changes could look like?

There aren’t too many Alabama uniform concept ideas out there, which is probably a good thing considering Crimson Tide fans love the traditional look. In fact, those who have attempted the new uniforms idea have mostly received negative — and I mean, negative — feedback from fans.

As a result, the options to choose from when creating a “top 5” list were scarce, but we were able to find at least one jersey concept that didn’t have the same typical negative reaction from the masses as others. So with that said, let’s look at several of the changes people have attempted to make.

Next… starting with the helmets

Broncos fans love the alternate helmet Tim Tebow posted on Instagram

Tim Tebow posted a photo wearing an alternate Broncos helmet and fans loved it.

Former Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow posted several photos on his Instagram page on Tuesday showing off some of the alternate helmets he has been signing. The first image featured a white alternate Broncos helmet:

Many fans were quick to comment that they missed Tebow in Denver.

“I miss seeing you wear orange and blue,” @chris_white03 said.

“Come back to Denver,” @jg.lozano26 added.

The Broncos re-shared the photo on their official Instagram page on Thursday, prompting some fans to comment their disapproval of the way Tebow’s time came to an end in Denver.

“Ya’ll don’t appreciate or respect Tebow nearly enough for what he did for us and I don’t like that smh,” @btys said.

“Do you know how good this guy could’ve been if he learned under manning?!” @tonecorleone25 commented.

The Broncos traded Tebow to the New York Jets after the team signed Peyton Manning during free agency in 2012. Tebow last played in the NFL in 2015 and he has been pursuing a professional baseball career since 2016.

Which Saints uniform combination won the most games in 2019?

The New Orleans Saints won all three of their “Color Rush” games in 2019, and debuted a new uniform combination for the Sean Payton era.

[jwplayer 6bf11BGB-ThvAeFxT]

A number of NFL teams are debuting new uniforms this offseason, but they’re all playing catch-up to the New Orleans Saints. The Saints have one of the league’s best color palettes, embodied with a crisp set of uniforms and iconic jerseys. It’s a great compliment to the city’s character, which was reflected in a recent ranking of NFL kits.

But which uniform combination benefited the Saints the most in 2019? Here’s the full breakdown, ranked by winning percentage:

  1. “Color Rush” alternates: 3-0 (1.000)
  2. White jerseys, white pants: 5-1 (.833)
  3. Black jerseys, black pants: 5-2 (.714)
  4. Black jerseys, gold pants: 0-1 (.000)

The Saints finally gave their “Color Rush” specials the performances those terrific jerseys deserve, winning all three contests in which they were worn — including two road games with the Seattle Seahawks and the Atlanta Falcons, and an early-season prime-time matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.

Curiously, the gold pants were limited to a few preseason appearances and Week 2’s disastrous loss to the Los Angeles Rams before getting phased out. The Saints introduced white pants not long after and never went back to the gold trousers, which had been a staple over the last decade. Maybe they’ll continue to be a third-tier option in 2020.

For the curious, here’s the record for each uniform combination used in the Sean Payton era, since 2006 (not including the alternate, kind of hideous gold jerseys worn during a 2002 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, which Cameron Jordan wants to revive):

  • White jerseys, white pants: 5-1 (.833)
  • “Color Rush” alternates: 6-2 (.750)
  • “Black and Gold” throwbacks: 2-1 (.667)
  • Black jerseys, gold pants: 23-13 (.639)
  • White jerseys, black pants: 38-25 (.603)
  • Black jerseys, black pants: 41-27 (.603)
  • White jerseys, gold pants: 31-24 (.564)

Cameron Jordan has a request if Saints join the wave of new NFL uniforms

New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan sees other NFL teams with new uniforms, and he has a humble request: bring back gold jerseys

[jwplayer TJigY8d6-ThvAeFxT]

It almost feels like a different NFL team is announcing new uniform changes each week this offseason. It’s a move the New Orleans Saints could maybe get involved with; we’ve already made our stance clear, advocating for the popular “Color Rush” gold-on-white alternates to be promoted as the team’s full-time away jerseys.

Other suggestions have ranged from reviving the old-school black and gold throwbacks to introducing black helmets instead of gold, as well as seldom-seen logos like the Louisiana Saints patch that once decorated jersey sleeves. But if you were to ask All-Pro Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan to share his take, he has a creative request: bring back the gold jerseys.

Now, Jordan doesn’t want to give up his current threads (he cleared that up in a follow-up tweet, blaming a typo), but he would like to redeem the ill-fated gold jerseys. The Saints last wore them in 2002, during a loss to the Minnesota Vikings, and Jordan would love the opportunity to make up for that defeat while wearing such a unique look. What do you think? Should the Saints take his advice?

Elsewhere – Best Notre Dame Alternate Uniforms Bracket

One Foot Down is doing a fun tournament to decide Notre Dame’s best alternate uniform in recent memory. See my picks here.

Shout-out to the gang over at One Foot Down, the SB Nation Notre Dame blog that does a great job covering/making Fighting Irish news fun on a daily basis.

They’ve come up with their own bracket and are currently in the second round of voting to determine Notre Dame’s best alternate uniform in relatively recent history.  Here’s a link to their site and bracket and below I share what my picks for the bracket will be.

1. ’77 Throwback over 16. ’18 Pinstripe
One is iconic while the other was downright awful.  The one thing I will say is that the Pinstripe jersey wasn’t as bad once you actually saw it on the playing field.  That said, it’s still worthy of this seed, although I’d have the ’16 Shamrock uniforms up there, too.

9. ’15 Shamrock over 8. ’11 Shamrock
It may have been too much green for some but it was at least different and an attempt. Sure the Irish played poorly that night at Fenway Park but that was a better look than the ’11 Shamrock which was just a copy of Bush Push green’s with a funky helmet.

5. ’91 Sugar Bowl over 12. ’14 Shamrock
The white jersey with the green numbers were beautiful and from a memorable upset win which shouldn’t count for anything but too bad, for me it does.  The ’14 Shamrock blues worn in Indianapolis against Purdue were a disaster.  Not quite 16-seed bad but still plenty awful.

4. ’88 Throwback over ’12 Shamrock
Not going to lie, next round is going to be really tough for me to decide in the moment.  The ’88 Throwback might have sounded a bit cheesy but looked awesome while the ’12 Shamrock uniform was as ugly as Miami’s performance the night they were worn.

3. ’13 Shamrock over 14. ’16 Shamrock
The whites at Jerry World in Dallas were beautiful in knocking off Arizona State while the ’16 Shamrock would have been in real discussion for my 16-seed. Easy win for ’13 here.

6. ’05 Bush Push Green over 11. ’18 Senior Night Green
The hunter green was a gorgeous look while the neon green did nothing for me although anytime you beat up Florida State things look good.  ’05 greens easy.

10. ’17 Rockne Tribute over 7. ’98 Gator Bowl
The Rockne Tribute jerseys worn in the Senior Day win over Navy were beautiful even if not that absurd looking. Probably why I liked them so much.  Easy win for an awful seeding by the committee.

2. ’11 Under the Lights over 15. ’02 Green (BC)
Two games that make me vomit, the ’11 Under the Lights at Michigan uniforms were the best thing Adidas ever did during their time with Notre Dame.

Second Round – My Picks:

1. ’77 Throwbacks over 9. ’15 Shamrock
’77 Throwbacks are a powerhouse and were done perfectly, even down to the socks.  Another blowout win for the ’77 Throwback, even if they were only worn in a blowout loss to USC.

5. ’91 Sugar Bowl over 4. ’88 Throwbacks
It was nearly a battle of national championship throwbacks but I couldn’t quite give it to ’88. Maybe it’s the memories of that Sugar Bowl as Mirer doing the gator chop in these is nothing short of awesome to me. Sugar Bowl white’s with green numbers moves on!

3. ’13 Shamrock over ’05 Bush Push Greens
Loved the Bush Push Greens in the moment but they’ve hardly withstood the test of time.  Also have a brutally tough match-up here as those ’13 white uniforms in Dallas were tremendous.

10. ’17 Rockne Tribute over 2. ’11 Under the Lights
Fight me.  The Rockne Tributes were a thing of beauty and the details even on the gold helmet were an excellent example of attention to detail.  Final Four for them!

My Final Four Picks:

1. ’77 Throwbacks over 5. ’91 Sugar Bowl
This was close for me but those ’77 Throwbacks are a one-seed for a reason.  They were just so near perfect even if they’d already been worn three decades earlier.

10. ’17 Rockne Tribute over 3. ’13 Shamrock
I told you how ridiculous it was that the Rockne’s were a 10-seed in the first round.  How do you not love them?  The cleats even looked old school that day!

Finals:
Whew boy, this is a powerhouse match-up for me.  I guess it depends on what you’re feeling at the exact moment because these are my two favorites in the bracket by a fairly wide margin.  I do have to give the edge to the Rockne’s though.  Classic feel while being original gives it the slightest of edges to me.
10. ’17 Rockne Tribute over 1. ’77 Throwbacks

Enjoy their bracket over at OFD and again, following it by clicking here.

UPDATE:  One of my favorites went down in round one but I did go 6-2 in the opening round, still having three of my final four picks remaining!

Another one: Alvin Kamara added to NFC Pro Bowl roster

New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara was chosen as an alternate for the 2020 Pro Bowl, joining ten teammates on the NFC roster.

The New Orleans Saints have again raised their total number of players on the 2020 NFC Pro Bowl roster, this time with running back Alvin Kamara. Kamara’s addition raises the small herd of Saints participating in the all-star game to eleven, which is again a new franchise record. It breaks previous high-water marks of nine and ten selections, each set this year with new alternates called up.

It’s not immediately clear who Kamara is filling in for — Dalvin Cook, Christian McCaffrey, and Ezekiel Elliott were each initially voted in, but none of them have yet publicly backed out. But it’ll be the third career Pro Bowl appearance in as many years for Kamara, who was selected outright in 2017 and chosen as an alternate in 2018. It’s anyone’s guess on what he’ll get into in Orlando; in last year’s game, Kamara convinced the NFC coaching staff to let him line up in a pass-rush package on defense, and very nearly sacked Deshaun Watson.

The full list of Saints participating in this year’s Pro Bowl stands as such, for now:

  • WR Michael Thomas (starter)
  • DE Cameron Jordan (starter)
  • CB Marshon Lattimore (starter)
  • KR Deonte Harris (starter)
  • K Wil Lutz (starter)
  • QB Drew Brees (backup)
  • LT Terron Armstead (backup)
  • TE Jared Cook (alternate)
  • LG Andrus Peat (alternate)
  • RG Larry Warford (alternate)
  • RB Alvin Kamara (alternate)

Jared Cook, Andrus Peat promoted to Pro Bowl as alternates

New Orleans Saints tight end Jared Cook and left guard Andrus Peat were promoted to the NFC roster for the 2020 Pro Bowl, making nine Saints

[jwplayer gDZGKLBo-ThvAeFxT]
The New Orleans Saints announced Friday that two more of their players were selected for the 2020 Pro Bowl, with tight end Jared Cook and left guard Andrus Peat called up to participate in the all-star game as alternates. It’s the second career Pro Bowl appearance for both of them.

Their addition makes for a total of nine players representing New Orleans on the NFC roster, which would be the most in team history if it holds. Some players could choose to sit out of the game; wide receiver Michael Thomas was uncertain about his involvement when asked after the Saints’ playoffs loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

For now, the nine Saints players in the Pro Bowl include:

  • QB Drew Brees
  • WR Michael Thomas
  • OT Terron Armstead
  • DE Cameron Jordan
  • CB Marshon Lattimore
  • K Wil Lutz
  • PR Deonte Harris
  • OG Andrus Peat
  • TE Jared Cook
