Our unedited notes for this week’s pod can be seen below.

1. Latavius Murray unlikely to re-sign?
  • Murray visited the Bills last week and 9News reported that the running back is unlikely to re-sign with the Broncos.
  • That very well might be the case, but I can’t help but think back to the Melvin Gordon situation last spring.
  • When Melvin Gordon was unsigned into April last year, many speculated that he wouldn’t return to Denver. It looked like he was set to sign with the Ravens … then, right before the draft, the Broncos re-signed Gordon.
  • I don’t think Murray will re-sign before the draft, but I haven’t ruled out the possibility of him remaining in Denver.
2. What are the Broncos’ positions of need in the NFL draft?
  • Denver currently has five draft picks, with two in the third round.
  • Here are five remaining positions of need:
  • 1. Cornerback: Damarri Mathis showed last year he’s capable of starting across from Pat Surtain, but I’d love him as a CB3 instead of a CB2.
  • 2. Center: Right now, Lloyd Cushenberry is penciled in as the starter with Kyle Fuller providing competition. Would like more upside at C.
  • 3. Defensive line depth: After losing Dre’Mont Jones and DeShawn Williams, the Broncos did add Zach Allen, but they still need more depth.
  • 4. Offensive line depth: The Broncos could use a backup swing tackle and another interior offensive lineman.
  • 5Third-string RB with upside: Samaje Perine is an excellent insurance back with Javonte Williams facing an uncertain recovery timeline, but the Broncos still need a quality third-string RB (who could be the RB2 early in the season).
  • Bonus: New model of Taysom Hill (such as Jack Colletto) and a returner candidate (perhaps a WR or CB who returns). You can also never have too many pass rushers.
3. Broncos’ in-house free agents still unsigned
  • RB Latavius Murray, DB Kareem Jackson, OT Cam Fleming, TE Eric Tomlinson, OL Dalton Risner, QB Brett Rypien, OT Billy Turner, OL Tom Compton, RB Marlon Mack, RB Marlon Mack, OLB Jonathan Kongbo and CB Darius Phillips are still available.
  • Perhaps Denver will bring one or two of them back after the draft.
Miscellaneous: Sutton note, NFL franchise cost, new helmets and a new stadium
  • The Ravens tried to trade for Courtland Sutton this offseason but Denver turned them down. We don’t need to rehash the WR situation because we discussed it last week, but just a note that the Ravens had interest. They later signed Odell Beckham.
  • After failing to buy the Broncos last offseason, a Josh Harris-led group is expected to buy the Washington Commanders for $6 billion. Denver went for a $4.65 billion price last year. Rob Walton got a “Great Value” buy.
  • The Broncos will debut new alternate helmets with their Color Rush uniforms this season. In a teaser photo, the helmet appears to be white. Denver has also hinted that new uniforms are in the works, but those won’t be ready before 2024 at the earliest.
  • The Broncos have started polling fans about the possibility of a new stadium and — of course — personal seat licenses (PSLs) to help build it. With the richest ownership group in the NFL (by far), the Broncos should not be asking fans to help build a new super stadium.
  • Also, a new stadium would likely include a roof for hosting a Super Bowl. If that happens, it could be retractable, but a roof would likely rule out the possibility of snow games. Don’t love that.
What’s next?
  • The NFL draft is next week! We’ll recap my final Broncos mock draft on next week’s episode.

Ryan and I will return next week to give a final Broncos mock draft right before the NFL draft begins. If you enjoy this podcast, you can check out previous episodes on Apple PodcastsSpotify or on your podcast service of choice. Please consider giving the podcast a positive rating and review!

What will the Broncos’ alternate helmet look like with a full uniform?

This is what the Broncos’ alternate helmet could look like with the team’s Color Rush uniform.

The Denver Broncos announced in a teaser tweet earlier this week that they will break out alternate helmets this season.

In the image released by the team, part of a white helmet is shown. That presumably means the Broncos are getting a mostly-white helmet as their alternate in 2023.

Denver won’t have revised uniforms in time for this season (they might arrive in 2024), but fans who appreciate the “D” logo will be glad to hear that this year’s alternate helmet will be worn with the team’s Color Rush uniform, which previously featured a “D” logo on a blue helmet.

Fans on Twitter were quick to imagine what a white helmet might look like with an all-white Denver uniform. Here’s a mockup design by @TimContic on Twitter:

It also looks sharp with an orange jersey and white pants:

Because the Broncos have to wear their existing Color Rush uniform, though, it will likely look more like this design from @Mr_Boggins on Twitter:

One fan on Reddit, u/JohnMarkParker, posted a full image of what a white helmet could look like with the existing Color Rush uniform:

(JohnMarkParker on Reddit)

JohnMarkParker also created a mockup of the Color Rush uniform with white pants, and he also sent Broncos Wire a photo of what a white helmet would look like with the team’s alternate blue jersey:

If we understand the NFL’s uniform rules correctly, the Broncos will be wearing their white helmets with their existing Color Rush uniforms this fall. Mixing it up with white pants or an all-white uniform would look sharp, but that doesn’t seem to be an option.

We’ll find out for sure when Denver fully announces its alternate helmet and the uniform it will accompany later this offseason.

Broncos tease (white?) alternate helmet for 2023 season

The Broncos have teased a new alternate helmet for the 2023 season, and it appears to be mostly white.

The Denver Broncos will have a new (alternate) helmet this season.

The Broncos teased what appears to be a primarily-white helmet on their official Twitter page on Monday evening with the caption “Coming soon. 👀” The rocky mountains are reflected in the visor of the helmet, which might be a hint that the mountains will be used as a logo (just speculation).

Denver previously teased the possibility of an alternate helmet when they leaked a fake uniform design on April Fools’ Day. The alternate helmet is no joke — it will debut in time for the 2023 season.

Aric DiLalla of the team’s official website tweeted on Monday that teams can wear alternate helmets up to two times a season, and they have to be worn with a Color Rush uniform.

We’ve known since last month that the Broncos were expected to roll out an alternate helmet this season, and we even created a mock design of what a white alternate helmet could look like last year.

Denver also appears to have begun the process of designing new (or at least revamped) uniforms, but those won’t be ready before the 2024 season at the earliest. Stay tuned.

Broncos share funny fake uniform on April Fools’ Day, tease alternate helmet

The Broncos shared a fake new uniform concept (April Fools!) and then teased the very real possibility of new alternate helmets for 2023 👀

The Denver Broncos know their fans are eagerly awaiting updates on the possibility of the team getting new uniforms, and they tapped into that anticipation with a spoof video on April Fools’ Day.

The Broncos shared a video on their official Twitter page on Saturday (April 1) showing a uniform concept “designed” by Miles, their mascot.

“It’s your uniform … but worse,” a voice says in the background. The design featured a tail, Crocs instead of cleats and mismatched socks.

“It’s a no for more,” another voice tells the mascot.

Miles did not take the rejection well, kicking a trash can on his way out:

At the end of the video, the Broncos did reward fans who stuck around with some based-in-reality nuggets.

“Good things take time,” team president Damani Leech says before a staffer chimes in to add, “Wait, but Damani, what about the alternate helmets?” The video then cuts off abruptly.

It’s a clever move from the team because fans in Denver will be left wondering if the alternate helmets are also part of the April Fool’s bit. There’s good news on that front — alternate helmets are expected to debut this fall. Well done, Broncos. Well done.

Broncos expected to wear alternate or throwback helmet in 2023

Broncos are expected to wear an alternate or throwback helmet in 2023, different than the Color Rush helmet, which is just a sticker change.

Last year, the NFL had 13 teams wear alternate or throwback helmets during the 2022 season. The Denver Broncos were not among them (the Color Rush helmet doesn’t count because it’s just a sticker change on the existing helmet).

True alternate (or throwback) helmets are expected to be on the way for the Broncos in time for the 2023 season, according to Andrew Lind of SportsLogos.net.

Wearing an alternate helmet this fall might be a step toward revealing fully revised uniforms in 2024. Denver has teased that new uniforms are being worked on, and fans and graphic designers have been dreaming up potential uniforms for the club’s eventual new look.

The Detroit Lions will also debut alternate helmets in 2023 before revealing overhauled uniforms in 2024, according to the Detroit Free Press. It’s possible that the Broncos could be following a similar timeline.

Broncos Wire put together some mockups of alternate white and orange helmets last year, but what fans probably really want to see is a light blue helmet with the old “D” logo. Denver quarterback Russell Wilson has also made it clear that he’s a big fan of the team’s throwback look.

Wearing a true throwback light blue helmet would allow the Broncos to wear a full throwback uniform that could look like this. Sign us up for that!

Cowboys confirm never-before-worn alternate helmet for Week 17 game vs Titans

The Cowboys will sport both a throwback and an alternate helmet in 2022, thanks to some clever mixing-and-matching by the equipment staff. | From @ToddBrock24f7

One of the most iconic uniforms in the NFL will be getting a second subtle tweak this season, thanks to the league’s revised helmet rule and a clever mix-and-match approach taken by the Cowboys equipment staff.

The team will sport its all-white uniform set for the Week 17 showdown with the Tennessee Titans, the club officially announced on Friday. That game is a Thursday Night Football matchup, so the monochromatic “Color Rush” jersey/pants combo is something that’s been seen previously.

But in 2022, it will be capped off with a never-before-worn alternate helmet, the Cowboys have confirmed.

They showed off the new lid in a video they dropped on social media.

But wait, you may be saying. The Cowboys already revealed the all-white throwback helmet they’ll wear for their Thanksgiving Day game versus the Giants. So how is this new?

It’s all in the details.

The alternate “Arctic Cowboys” helmet features the team’s current star logo, which is outlined with a thin blue-and-white border and has been since the 1964 season. Prior to that, the star was unbordered; that’s the logo that will adorn the Thanksgiving throwbacks.

Also making its debut for the Dec. 29 game is a matching white facemask, marking the first time the Cowboys have ever worn a cage in any color other than gray.

The team’s announcement actually doesn’t come as a total surprise, seeing as how the alternate helmet was leaked back in late July. As squads around the league were unveiling either throwback or alternate looks for the season, the Cowboys showed up on both lists.

Some assumed it was just a mistake by a graphic artist that Dallas was included in both announcements, but a close inspection of the artwork shows the exact differences outlined above. (The throwback version even takes away the “Cowboys” wordmark sticker on the front bumper, though it will grace the alternate helmet. It’s a nice nod to historical accuracy, since those obviously weren’t part of the 1960 headgear.)

The NFL’s relaxing of the one-shell rule this season allowed many teams to invent an all-new color combo, while it permitted a few others to resurrect a look from the past.

By mixing their throwback shell color with their current logo and adding a brand-new facemask, the Cowboys were able to sneakily get two new looks on the ’22 schedule.

Week 17’s clash with the Titans could end up being an important game for both clubs as they prepare to close out their regular seasons. But we already know for sure the Cowboys will be looking sharp for their New Year’s visit to Nashville.
