Celtics Lab 171: On All-Star Week, buyout options, and ditching the interim tag with Gary Gulman

This pod, the Lab linked up with comedian and friend of the pod Gary Gulman to offer our thoughts on the state of the Celtics, how to make All-Star Week better, and even give you a review of a certain Boston-oriented cereal a try.

The Boston Celtics and the NBA have made it to All-Star Week for the 2022-23 season. It is a moment to rest, recalibrate and reflect on accomplishments ahead of the annual exhibition of the league’s very best (or at least most popular) players.

They will do so with a freshly-minted head coach. As of Thursday, there is no longer an “interim” label in front of Joe Mazzulla’s name. He has guided the Celtics to the East’s top record. With solid wins, respectable losses and a surprisingly good add, Mike Muscala, at the trade deadline, Boston can now add a player from the buyout market if they choose.

Celtics to hold meetings about landing 2026 All-Star Game

Boston’s City Council has now called for a meeting about how to go about preparing the city to improve the bid to host the 2026 NBA All-Star Game.

The season has been very successful for the Boston Celtics, but, as all good organizations do, they are looking toward the future. That future involves bringing the All-Star Game back to the city according to new reporting from the Boston Herald’s Sean Phillip Cotter.

City Councilor Brian Worrell has called for a meeting about how to go about preparing the city to improve its bid to host the 2026 NBA All-Star Game.

“This is championship city,” said Worrell. “It’s definitely past due.”

The push to get an All-Star game to Boston comes after the major success Cleveland enjoyed as a result of its hosting the league’s annual exhibition tilt.

Per Worrell, the event generated $141.4 million in direct spending in Cleveland and generated $248.9 million in overall economic impact, making the attraction to Boston evident.

More important is the legacy of the city itself. Winning is a part of Boston’s DNA, and it would be hard to find a more passionate and intense fan base than Boston’s.

This is crucial for so many people and no one deserves it quite as much as the Boston fan base who have been without an all-star game weekend in any sport since 1999. With the support of Governor Maura Healey, the city should be able to field a very competitive bid.

Boston’s Jayson Tatum rises to third in frontcourt fan vote for 2023 NBA All-Star game; Jaylen Brown still fourth in backcourt

The second returns for the 2023 All-Star Game fan voting look like the Celtics will have an All-Star starter.

The second release of fan voting results for the 2023 NBA All-Star game have an improved outlook for the Boston Celtics per The Athletic’s Shams Charania. The team would have one starter if it were the fan vote alone that determined who made the cut for being an All-Star starter and voting ended today.

That of course is not the case. The player and media vote outweighs fan voting 3-to-1.

However, Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum has moved into one of the Eastern Conference’s three frontcourt starter spots with nearly 3.3 million votes. That places Tatum well behind Kevin Durant (4.5 million votes) and Giannis Antetokounmpo (4.4 million votes) and with a small edge over Joel Embiid. Tatum leads Embiid by about 40,000 votes.

The two backcourt spots are a tighter race. Boston star wing Jaylen Brown remains in fourth place with 1.5 million votes, trailing Kyrie Irving (3 million votes), Donovan Mitchell (2.7 million votes) and James Harden, though he is only about 60,000 votes behind Harden.

It seems likely that even with the boost he will likely see from the media and perhaps player votes that Brown will not start unless he begins to pick up votes in a hurry. Tatum ought to, barring a drop-off in fan support in the remaining time left for the fan vote to be completed.

With Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown each coming in fourth in fan voting, will the Boston Celtics field an All-Star starter?

This Thursday afternoon, the league released the results from the first round of 2023 NBA All-Star Game fan voting returns.

On Thursday afternoon, the league released the first results of 2023 NBA All-Star Game fan voting returns. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are among the top vote-getters in the first wave of returns, so it seems likely the Celtics will have at least that many All-Stars this season.

But the fan votes make up of only 50% of the total vote pool for All-Star starter selections. The media and players each contribute a quarter of the overall vote.

In the first wave of fan voting results that were released, Tatum and Brown are fourth in frontcourt and backcourt voting, respectively.

With this in mind, how many Celtics are likely to be starters in the 2023 All-Star Game?

On the most recent episode of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast, the hosts and guest Michael Mulford of Bulls Wire and SI’s Dallas Basketball got into the early expectations for All-Star voting and their projected starters, as well as a look ahead to games against the Dallas Mavericks and Chicago Bulls.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear their views on potential Boston 2023 All-Star starters and what lies ahead this week for the Celtics.

Celtics Lab 163: Previewing Boston’s games with Mavs, Bulls, All-Star starters with Michael Mulford

How the Celtics respond to losses against the Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder may go a long way toward determining whether the Celtics break out of their slump longer term

The Boston Celtics have a key part of their 2022-23 schedule unfolding over the next week with rematches against the Dallas Mavericks and Chicago Bulls on tap.

How the Celtics respond to losses against the Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder may go a long way toward determining whether the Celtics break out of their slump. There is some urgency. A possible battle for first place in the East looms with the Brooklyn Nets on Jan. 12.

To that end, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” linked up with Bulls Wire and Dallas Basketball editor Mike Mulford to talk about Boston’s tilts with the Mavs and Chicago, as well as the state of the MVP and All-Star starter race.

The foursome even touches on a potential Javonte Green reunion with the Celtics should the Bulls look to recoup some assets if their season continues to go sideways.

How can the NBA make All-Star week’s Dunk Contest better?

Once the premier attraction among all of the annual NBA All-Star game special events, the league’s dunk contest has grown a bit stale; can it be revived?

Once the premier attraction among all of the annual NBA All-Star game special events, the league’s dunk contest has grown a bit stale, with a lot of retro dunks being re-attempted by a new generation while few new twists get added to the game.

Controversial scoring in recent years has also not helped the cause of keeping the dunk contest relevant, leading to all sorts of suggestions on how the NBA might breathe new life into one of the historically most important parts of All-Star week festivities. To explore this line of thinking, ESPN’s “Courtside Club” with host Rachel DeMita linked up with NBA host and entrepreneur Christian Crosby.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what the duo have to say on ways to make a hallmark event of a hallmark celebration relevant again in future All-Star events.

WATCH: Celtics star Jayson Tatum talks on his son Deuce’s popularity, parenting in the NBA

Speaking at All-Star media availability, Tatum’s moment in the sun was momentarily overshadowed by his son — not that he minded!

At the rate his fame is growing these days, Boston Celtics All-Star forward Jayson Tatum might not even be the most famous member of his family among Celtics fans. Speaking with the media in the midst of the 2022 NBA All-Star Week festivities, Tatum fielded a number of questions about his son Deuce, a frequent sideline fixture and fan favorite.

“People cheer when they see him and scream his name when he comes to games on the road and here at All-Star,” related the St. Louis native about Deuce. “He has his own personality. The plus of having a kid at 19 is that we’re growing up together.”

Tatum had plenty more to say about his extremely popular son in the interview, much of which was captured in the clip embedded below by Boston Glove Celtics beat reporter Gary Washburn.

Check out the clip to here a sampling of his words about Deuce and parenting in the NBA more generally.

Boston Celtics have won 2nd-most All-Star Week contests in NBA history

And you might be surprised by the only club with more such wins, given the team’s relative age.

In the spirit of the 2022 NBA All-Star Week festivities currently underway in the city of Cleveland, Ohio, our sister site HoopsHype put together an accounting of which team’s representatives at All-Star Week competitions have won the most such contests.

The Dunk Contest, Skills Challenge, and 3-Point Contest may not be the focal point of the annual gathering of NBA stars and rising prospects, but they are an integral part of it, and over the course of the league’s history of having such competitions, the Celtics rank quite high in winning them. Tied for second overall, in fact, with the Chicago Bulls in a dead (but not Miami) heat with them, both franchises only trailing the Heat (prior pun intended, apologies) with a total of 10 such contests won.

Let’s take a look at those won by Boston Celtics over the years.

Shams: NBA to target Mar. 25 for trade deadline, Mar. 10-15 for ASW

The league reportedly hopes for All-Star week to be held from Mar. 10 to 15, and the trade deadline on the 25th of that month.

The NBA will target March 25th for the trade deadline of the 2020-21 season’s calendar, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, pending approval by the league’s board of governors.

The date has particular significance for the Boston Celtics now that they have a massive, $28.5 million trade exception — the NBA’s largest in its seven-decade history — after dealing veteran forward Gordon Hayward to the Charlotte Hornets in November.

While the utility of the exception will extend into the early days of the 2021-22 season, the team’s best shot at finding the sort of talent it wants on its roster for a deep playoff run may be at their peak as teams drop out of the playoff hunt later in the season.

Other important dates relayed by Charania under consideration by the league include holding the All-Star break between March 10 and 15, and a plan to set the latest date a player can be waived while remaining eligible to play in the 2020 NBA Playoffs on April 9.

That will leave teams more than a month to acclimate any late editions to their roster with the regular season set to end on May 16 and the NBA’s second-ever play-in tourney slated to begin two days afterwards.

The postseason is anticipated to run from May 22 to July 22, assuming things go as smoothly as they did in the Disney restart — which may be asking for a lot, given the so-called ‘bubble’ it was held in.

Fingers crossed.

Boston Celtics at the 2020 NBA All-Star Game (photos)

The Boston Celtics have been busy at the 2020 NBA All-Star Weekend, with forward Jayson Tatum, point guard Kemba Walker and two way center Tacko Fall involved in multiple events.

The Boston Celtics have been especially well-represented at the 2020 NBA All-Star weekend in Chicago Illinois.

There are two Celtics competing in Sunday night’s main event, and one — point guard Kemba Walker — will be an All-Star starter. The other, third-year forward Jayson Tatum, is a reserve.

The two will play on opposing team, with the Duke product headed to Team LeBron, and the former UConn standout playing for team Giannis.

Tatum also participated in the Taco Bell Skills Challenge as he tried — but failed — to defend in 2019 win in that event, and fan favorite two way center Tacko Fall came along as well to coach the annual Basketball Without Borders camp.

Fall had an even bigger moment that was unscripted and unplanned, as he served as the obstacle for Orlando Magic’s Aaron Gordon to execute arguably the best dunk of the 2020 NBA Dunk Contest.

Clearing the 7-foot-5 Senegalese center didn’t secure Gordon the win, but it certainly left a memorable mark on the often-criticized exhibition weekend.

Tatum also did some coaching with the NBA Cares Special Olympics Unified Game as well.

So far, it’s been a busy weekend for Boston players in Chicago, and Sunday hasn’t even really started — take a look at the photos below to see all the action Celtics players have been involved in to date.
