Celtics Lab 171: On All-Star Week, buyout options, and ditching the interim tag with Gary Gulman

This pod, the Lab linked up with comedian and friend of the pod Gary Gulman to offer our thoughts on the state of the Celtics, how to make All-Star Week better, and even give you a review of a certain Boston-oriented cereal a try.

The Boston Celtics and the NBA have made it to All-Star Week for the 2022-23 season. It is a moment to rest, recalibrate and reflect on accomplishments ahead of the annual exhibition of the league’s very best (or at least most popular) players.

They will do so with a freshly-minted head coach. As of Thursday, there is no longer an “interim” label in front of Joe Mazzulla’s name. He has guided the Celtics to the East’s top record. With solid wins, respectable losses and a surprisingly good add, Mike Muscala, at the trade deadline, Boston can now add a player from the buyout market if they choose.

Celtics Lab 96: On the 2021-22 Celtics and patience, rooting for Jerry Buss and more with Gary Gulman

In this episode, we took the temperature of this iteration of the Celtics, looked back on the 1980s in Boston, and more with comedian Gary Gulman.

Followers of the Boston Celtics who happen to also be fans of standup comedy are for the most part aware of popular comedian and star of the HBO special “The Great Depresh” Gary Gulman’s love for the team he grew up watching as a native of Peabody, Massachusetts. And Gulman is also a fan of dropping in on Celtics-oriented podcasts while rightly advocating for patience with this up-and-coming roster.

So the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast linked up with Gulman to talk about his prescient analysis of the 2021-22 Boston roster in our most recent episode, touching on everything from how he played the sport along with football in high school (and the latter in college at Boston University) to his outstanding standup and advocacy for mental health.

We even get into the new HBO series “Winning Time” and his inside view of the series as it was developed via his own ties to the cast producing the Los Angeles Lakers-centric docu-series given its unignorable ties to the Celtics in the 1980s.
