AP’s first-team All-America includes three Alabama players

AP All-American first-team led by three Alabama defenders

With only bowl games left in the 2023 college football season, the year is sadly nearly done. After the Army-Navy game, we are at that point in the winter where our attention has shifted to the awards and accolades before playoffs get underway.

The first of the major awards was announced on Saturday night as LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels was recognized as the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner after guiding the Tigers to a 9-3 record and finishing second in the SEC West. As great as Daniels was, the Tide defense was one of the few teams to keep him in check during a 42-28 victory in Tuscaloosa this season.

The Tide’s defense was so sensational that they had three players named to the AP first-team All-America, all on the defensive side of the ball. Dallas Turner and Kool-Aid McKinstry come as no surprise, but it was Terrion Arnold’s emergence in the secondary that came as a surprise. Arnold led the defense with five interceptions and 11 passes defended and was also good for 61 tackles.

Offensive lineman JC Latham and defensive back Caleb Downs also qualified for the second team while kicker Will Reichard was named to the third team.

All of these accolades are noteworthy, but every single player on Alabama’s roster will tell you that all that matters is the game on Jan. 1 against Michigan in the Rose Bowl.

Armando Bacot named to All-America team

North Carolina Tar Heel Armando Bacot was named to the All-America team.

North Carolina Tar Heel [autotag]Armando Bacot[/autotag] has earned another honor, being named to the third-team All-America.

The honor comes from the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA), which released its annual all-america teams. Bacot is the only Tar Heel and Atlantic Coast Conference player to make one of the teams.

Joining Bacot on the third team are Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis, Iowa’s Kris Murray, Kansas State’s Markquis Nowell and Penn State’s Jalen Pickett.

The season might not have ended the way Bacot had hoped. However, his impact was felt, which has resulted in a boatload of honors since the final whistle sounded. He was named to all-district by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and All-America third team by AP.

Bacot had a remarkable year, breaking Tyler Hansbrough’s record and surpassing Michael Jordan on UNC’s all-time scoring list. Bacot averaged 15.9 points, 10.4 rebounds and one block per game.

No one knows if Bacot will be back, but with his impact on and off the court, it would be nice to see him back for the Tar Heels.

Which Penn State player made the AP preseason All-American team?

One of Penn State’s best players was named an AP All-American ahead of the 2021 college football season.

College football will be played this weekend, including the official Big Ten opener between Nebraska and Illinois. Now that the preseason rankings have been shared and explained, and the watch lists have been released, the preseason accolades continue to roll in for one of Penn State’s top players on the roster in 2021.

Penn State safety Jaquan Brisker was named to the Associated Press preseason All-America second team on Monday. Brisker is the only Nittany Lion player to appear on the AP preseason All-American roster.

Brisker has been rolling in preseason hype this summer as we approach the start of the 2021 season. Brisker was previously named on the watch list for the Bronco Nagurski Trophy, the Jim Thorpe Award, and the Chuck Bednarik Award.

2021 Penn State Nittany Lions Profile Card: Jaquan Brisker

Brisker’s decision to return to Penn State for his super senior season was a big lift to the Penn State secondary. The return of Tariq Castro-Fields at cornerback helps in a big way as well. Brisker has been rated one of the nation’s top 50 players overall by Pro Football Focus, which also included him on their preseason All-America team. Pro Football Focus rates Brisker one of the nation’s top five safeties returning this fall to play college football.

Florida commit Jason Marshall, a five-star cornerback from Palmetto High School in Miami, was featured on this year’s high school All-America list from USA TODAY heading into the 2020 season, landing on the second team.

Marshall, who is the No. 29 player in the 2021 recruiting class and the No. 2 overall cornerback according to the 247Sports Composite, is the highest-rated recruit in Florida’s class.

Here’s USA TODAY’s profile of Marshall.

The No. 2-ranked cornerback in the nation per 247sports, Marshall had 44 tackles, five interceptions and 15 passes defended last season.

Class of 2021

Height/Weight: 6-2/180

College commitment: Florida

If Marshall signs with the Gators, UF coach Dan Mullen will have earned the commitment of a five-star recruit in back-to-back cycles after landing the No. 12 overall player in Gervon Dexter in 2020.

Florida previously hadn’t signed a composite five-star since Martez Ivey and CeCe Jefferson in 2015, the first class under former coach Jim McElwain.

Marshall committed to the Gators over Miami on Aug. 9, and the next day, his Palmetto teammate safety Corey Collier also announced his commitment to Florida. Collier is currently the second-highest rated recruit in Mullen’s 2021 class.

With the likely impending departure of cornerback Marco Wilson after the 2020 season, Marshall could see a chance for early playing time when he joins the Gators in 2021.
