One of the top prospects in the state of Michigan has listed the Spartans in his top 10 list.

Alex VanSumeren — a four-star defensive tackle from Essexville, Mich. — revealed his top 10 schools on Tuesday morning, and Michigan State made the list. The Spartans are joined by Alabama, Clemson, Texas A&M, Penn State, Indiana, Oregon, Arizona, Auburn and Nebraska.

VanSumeren is ranked as the No. 16 defensive tackle and No. 193 overall recruit in the country. He’s also listed as the No. 4 player in the state of Michigan.

Last week, Michigan State was mentioned in an article as one of the programs building a strong relationship with VanSumeren so it makes sense to see the Spartans listed in his top 10. With how things are trending, it appears Michigan State will be in the race for VanSumeren until the end.

Report: Michigan State building ‘good relationship’ with 4-star DT Alex VanSumeren

MSU is reportedly one of a handful of schools that is building a “good relationship” with 2022 four-star defensive tackle Alex VanSumeren.

Michigan State is reportedly one of a handful of schools that is building a “good relationship” with 2022 four-star defensive tackle Alex VanSumeren.

Allen Trieu of 247Sports recently connected with one of Michigan’s top recruits, and VanSumeren made note of a few programs in particular that are building a strong relationship with him, which included the Spartans. Clemson, Alabama and Texas A&M were the other schools mentioned in a tweet from Trieu.

VanSumeren — who is from Essexville, Mich. — is ranked as the No. 15 defensive tackle and No. 224 overall prospect in the class of 2022.

The VanSumeren name may be familiar to Michigan State fans because his older brother Ben VanSumeren is also a Spartan. Ben transferred from Michigan to Michigan State in February, but that apparently won’t affect his young brother’s college decision.

Trieu responded to a question regarding his brother’s recent transfer playing a role in where Alex VanSumeren will end up, and it apparently is “not going to be a deciding factor.”

Alex VanSumeren is a huge priority for the Spartans in the 2022 class, and this will be one prospect fans will need to keep an eye on. Anytime you’re battling the likes of Clemson, Alabama and Texas A&M for a recruit, you know he’s a huge priority and would be a great get for the Spartans.

MSU Football lands former Michigan LB Ben VanSumeren from transfer portal

Former Michigan LB Ben VanSumeren entered the transfer portal after three seasons in Ann Arbor. He will now be heading to Michigan State.

Michigan State has added another new Spartan from the transfer portal, earning the commitment from Ben VanSumeren. VanSumeren will be transferring from in-state rival Michigan.

A member of Michigan’s 2018 recruiting class, from Essexville, Michigan and Garber High School and rated as a high 3-star.

VanSumeren has seen time as a starting linebacker at the SAM position in Ann Arbor, as well as a starting fullback. He will be coming to Michigan State as a linebacker who will excel at supporting in the run game.

VanSumeren’s younger brother, Alex, is also a priority recruit for Mel Tucker’s staff. Alex is a 4-star defensive tackle and is somewhat expected to follow his brother Ben. Let’s see if Mel Tucker can close out that recruitment in the Spartans favor.

Ben VanSumeren will be a great addition to help retool MSU’s defense and is an experienced linebacker, which is a position the Spartans desperately need some depth.

Michigan loses prized 2022 DT commit

Michigan football loses another 2022 pledge, this time in four-star defensive tackle Alex VanSumeren.

[jwplayer 4VY47JmU-XNcErKyb]

With Michigan football’s 2022 recruiting class, it always seems to be two steps forward and one step back. Such is the case, yet again, on Thursday evening.

At one point, Michigan had a commitment from Belleville (MI) four-star safety Myles Rowser — the brother of current cornerback Andre Seldon — before he eventually backed off his pledge. Then, months after he had committed to the 2022 class, four-star linebacker Tyler Martin — former high school teammate of current offensive lineman Zak Zinter — decommitted following Don Brown’s dismissal.

This time, it’s the first commitment of the class and another legacy-type.

2022 Essexville (MI) Garber’s Alex VanSumeren, the four-star defensive tackle and younger brother of current linebacker Ben VanSumeren, announced on Twitter that he’s backing off his verbal commitment and reopening his recruitment.

Michigan still has a defensive tackle pledged in the 2022 class in River Rouge (MI) three-star Davonte Miles.

With VanSumeren out, Michigan is back down to five commitments in 2022.

On Monday, Michigan football got started with the 2022 class in earnest, nabbing an in-state athlete that’s quite familiar with the program.

While there aren’t even rankings for the 2022 recruiting class as of yet, it looks like Essexville (MI) Garber athlete Alex VanSumeren, brother of Wolverines running back Ben VanSumeren is going to be a good one, as he already has offers from Michigan, Kentucky and Central Michigan.

A frequent visitor to campus, the younger VanSumeren has already seen all he’s needed to see apparently, having jumpstarted the 2022 class by pledging his commitment via Twitter on Monday afternoon.

VanSumeren is listed by 247Sports as 6-foot-3, 270-pounds, and primarily plays on the defensive side of the ball on the defensive line interior — but is versatile and can play tight end as well.
