Former UFC headliner ‘Cowboy’ Oliveira knocked out in bareknuckle debut in Russia

The combat sports world can be a fickle mistress, which a former UFC headliner continued to discover Friday.

The combat sports world can be a fickle mistress, which a former UFC headliner continued to discover Friday.

[autotag]Alex Oliveira[/autotag] made his bareknuckle boxing debut at a REN TV Fight Club event in Russia. He was knocked down twice in the first round and suffered a TKO loss to Igor Ionov.

Check out the brutal stoppage below, after which Oliveira appeared to be trying to work his nose back into place.

After a 3-1 start to his UFC career, Oliveira headlined UFC Fight Night 83 against another “Cowboy,” Donald Cerrone. And though he was submitted in the first round, “Cowboy” Oliveira went on a serious 6-1 run after that, including three post-fight bonus awards.

But a first-round submission loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov in October 2020 started a four-fight skid in the UFC, including three stoppage losses, and he was let go in 2022.

The 36-year-old Oliveira has gone 3-4 in MMA fights since then with three first-round TKO wins, but also four stoppage losses. This latest setback is his third straight combat sports loss.

Video: UFC vet Alex Oliveira scores wild knockout of Titan FC 82 opponent with judo throw

At Titan FC 82, Alex Oliveira hit a powerful judo throw that left his opponent lying motionless on the canvas.

It’s not often (if ever) you see an MMA fight finished with a judo toss, but that’s exactly what happened for former UFC welterweight [autotag]Alex Oliveira[/autotag].

At Titan FC 82 at SPENS 02 in Novi Sad, Serbia, Oliveira (25-14-1 MMA) hit a powerful throw on Stefan Sekulic with about 70 seconds remaining in the first round. The bout streamed live Friday evening on UFC Fight Pass.

Sekulic (14-8 MMA) was pressing Oliveira against the cage with double underhooks when Oliveira stepped across with his right leg and hit the judo throw. Sekulic appeared to go out from the impact with the canvas, and Oliveira landed one quick follow-up punch before getting up and walking away from the scene as the referee rushed in to call the fight.

Check out video of the wild finish below (via Twitter):

The finish marked a return to the win column for Oliveira, who dropped his previous outing in April.

While under the UFC banner, “Cowboy” Oliviera shared the octagon with a number of key names including Carlos Condit, Gunnar Nelson, Max Griffin, Shavkat Rakhmonov, Kevin Holland, and Donald Cerrone, among others.

Since exiting the UFC last March after an 11-10 run with the promotion, Oliveira is now 3-2, with each win coming by stoppage in the first round. Win or lose, Oliveira always makes for an exciting fight, and his latest finish is certainly one of the most unique in recent memory.

Alex ‘Cowboy’ Oliveira parts ways with the UFC after 22 appearances

Alex Oliveira’s UFC run is done for the time being after completing the final fight on his contract.

[autotag]Alex Oliveira[/autotag]’s UFC run is done for the time being after completing the final fight on his contract.

Oliveira (22-12-1), who fought 22 times with the promotion an amassed a 11-10 record with on no contest dating back to his octagon debut in March 2015, was informed by UFC brass that he would not be offered a new deal.

MMA Junkie verified the news with a person close to the situation, who requested anonymity.

Oliveira, 34, suffered four consecutive losses to end his UFC tenure, albeit to notable competition in Kevin Holland, Niko Price, Randy Brown and Shavkat Rakhmonov.

The Brazilian defeated notables such as former interim UFC champ Carlos Condit, former Bellator champ Will Brooks, Tim Means, Max Griffin and other under the UFC banner.

Oliveira’s fight with Yancey Medeiros at UFC 218 in December 2017, which he lost by second-round TKO, was the first bout in UFC history to feature two knockdowns for each fighter.

Sources informed MMA Junkie that Oliveira intends to find a new fighting home in short order with the desire to return to competition this year.

UFC 272 results: Kevin Holland stops Alex Oliveira in welterweight return

Kevin Holland had a successful welterweight return with a TKO win over Alex Oliveira at UFC 272.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Kevin Holland[/autotag]’s extra cut down to 170 pounds wasn’t in vain.

The fan favorite fighter was successful in his UFC welterweight debut, picking up a stoppage in over veteran [autotag]Alex Oliveira[/autotag] at Saturday’s UFC 272. Holland (22-7 MMA, 9-4 UFC) defeated Oliveira (22-12-1 MMA, 11-10 UFC) via TKO at the 0:38 mark of Round 2.

The welterweight bout was part of the UFC 272 main card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

As advertised, it was a wild affair from start to finish.

Right off the bat, Holland looked to pressure Oliveira, while the Brazilian focused more on countering him. After an even exchange on the feet and a quick takedown from Oliveira’s part, Holland landed a big combination that wobbled the Brazilian three minutes into the fight.

Holland kept composed and didn’t rush in to look for the finish. Oliveira managed to recover and began working Holland’s legs once again with hard calf kicks. With a few seconds remaining in the round, Oliveira got Holland’s back and looked to threaten with a choke, but ran out of time.

Likely a round down, Holland landed a hard combination and dropped Oliveira to start off the second round. Holland followed Oliveira to the ground and began to pour on shots from top position. Oliveira did everything he could to defend himself, but was overwhelmed by Holland’s volume. After a few seconds of ground-and-pound, the referee had no option but to stop the fight.

[lawrence-related id=2528646,2528486]

Holland got back in the win column after two losses and a no contest in his past three fights. Oliveira finds himself on his worst career skid. “Cowboy” has four consecutive defeats and is 2-7 in his past nine fights. His most recent victory was a decision win over Peter Sobotta in July 2020.

The UFC is back in front of a big arena crowd in Las Vegas this week with a huge grudge match at the top of the bill.

UFC 272 takes place Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Colby Covington[/autotag] (16-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC) takes on former teammate and training partner – as well as former friend and roommate – [autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag] (35-15 MMA, 12-8 UFC) in one of the biggest grudge matches in UFC history. Covington is a heavy -350 favorite at Tipico; the comeback on Masvidal is +255. Our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have Covington with a big 8-3 edge in the picks.

In the co-feature, former lightweight champion [autotag]Rafael dos Anjos[/autotag] (30-13 MMA, 19-11 UFC) takes on short-notice replacement [autotag]Renato Moicano[/autotag] (16-4-1 MMA, 8-4 UFC). Dos Anjos nearly is a 2-1 favorite and, like in the main event, has an 8-3 picks lead.

Also on the main card, featherweight [autotag]Edson Barboza[/autotag] (22-10 MMA, 16-10 UFC) will try to hand [autotag]Bryce Mitchell[/autotag] (14-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) his first loss. Mitchell is the favorite at the betting window at -165, but Barboza put up a total blowout in the picks at 9-2 from our staff members.

The biggest favorite on the main card is [autotag]Kevin Holland[/autotag] (21-7 MMA, 8-4 UFC), who is dropping from middleweight to welterweight for the first time to take on [autotag]Alex Oliveira[/autotag] (22-11-1 MMA, 11-9 UFC). Holland is a -370 favorite and is a near-unanimous choice from our pickers at 10-1.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Greg Hardy[/autotag] (7-4 MMA, 4-4 UFC) meets [autotag]Serghei Spivac[/autotag] (13-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) at heavyweight. Spivac is more than a 2-1 favorite, but he’s involved in our most contentious fight from a picks standpoint with a 7-4 lead.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Covington (65 percent), Dos Anjos (71 percent), Mitchell (58 percent), Holland (82 percent) and Spivac (64 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.
