Steelers vs Raiders injury updates: Game status report for both teams

The Steelers are missing several key players this weekend.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders square off on Sunday and both teams will be doing it without several of their best players. Here is the game-status report for each of the teams.

Steelers

S Damontae Kazee (OUT)

EDGE Nick Herbig (OUT)

EDGE Alex Highsmith (OUT)

DE Demarvin Leal (OUT)

RB/WR Cordarrelle Patterson (OUT)

TE MyCole Pruitt (OUT)

RB Jaylen Warren (Questionable)

Raiders

WR Davante Adams (OUT)

TE Michael Mayer (OUT)

LB Tommy Eichenberg (Questionable)

WR Jakobi Meyers (Questionable)

OT Tab Munford (Questionable)

G Jackson Powers-Johnson (Questionable)

RB Zamir White (Questionable)

S Trey Taylor (Questionable)

With Highsmith, Herbig and Leal out, the Steelers are terribly thin at edge rusher. Based on the depth chart, it will be second-year player Jeremiah Moon getting the start opposite T.J. Watt.

For the offense, a return of running back Jaylen Warren would be huge. With Cordarrelle Patterson out, Najee Harris can’t really be the guy to carry the rushing attack. If Warren on a snap count is better than Just Harris and the occasional Justin Fields run.

Steelers injury updates: Russell Wilson with full workout, Jaylen Warren remains limited

Here is the Steelers Thursday practice report.

There wasn’t much change for the Pittsburgh Steelers in their Thursday practice ahead of the team taking on the Las Vegas Raiders. The biggest change was the limited return of edge rusher Alex Highsmith, who is working his way back from a groin injury.

The Steelers gave multiple veteran starters another day of rest which is great for them but for a struggling team, doesn’t seem prudent. Nevertheless, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, running back Najee Harris, and defensive tackle Cam Heyward all took the day off.

Here is the full Thursday practice report.

No. 3 QB Russell Wilson (Calf) – Full
No. 22 RB Najee Harris (NIR – Resting) – Full
No. 23 S Damontae Kazee (Ankle) – DNP
No. 30 RB Jaylen Warren (Knee) – Limited

Injury report: Nick Herbig exits Week 5 game early with injury

During the Steelers’ Week 5 contest against the Dallas Cowboys, EDGE Nick Herbig exited the contest with an injury, shattering fans’ hearts.

Hearts were crushed in Pittsburgh’s Week 5 contest, as yet another injury was added to the Steelers growing list of banged-up players.  The Steelers’ defense had little time to celebrate T.J. Watt’s 100th career sack, as all eyes would soon be on Nick Herbig heading into the dreaded blue medical tent.

During the third quarter, Herbig could be seen hobbling and limping on the sideline while the Steelers’ medical team began to get him checked out.

With baited breath, Steelers fans were hopeful he would exit the tent and sprint back onto the field—they were instead forced to watch the promising second-year edge rusher walk into the locker room, barely putting any weight on his injured leg. Furthermore, it was then reported that Herbig was questionable to return with a hamstring injury.

All eyes will be on the situation, as Pittsburgh fans will hope the injury is short term because Alex Highsmith, the teams starting edge rusher opposite T.J. Watt, is likely out until Week 7 with a groin injury.

Parsons ruled out in Cowboys vs Steelers final injury report; Diggs, Cooks, LB updates

Several key components from both clubs are going to miss the game and there are a handful of question marks too. | From @KDDrummondNFL

Here’s the good news. They got Ezekiel Elliott and Ryan Flournoy some fluids. The veteran running back and rookie WR set to make his debut in Week 5 vs the Pittsburgh Steelers are no longer a concern after dehydrating on Thursday.

Here’s the bad news. As expected, Micah Parsons and Brandin Cooks have officially been ruled out for the 2-2 Dallas Cowboys. Parsons’ high-ankle sprain was a virtual certainty, as was Cooks knee after an infection developed. There’s no word when either will return but it could be a minute for both. Also, CB Trevon Diggs left practice on Thursday and did not participate on Friday, but head coach Mike McCarthy says that he’s set to play.

Meanwhile, the Steelers will also be without a starting pass rusher and key offensive components.

In the final injury report for the week, Pittsburgh ruled out LB Alex Highsmith, RB Cordarrelle Patterson and RB Jaylen Warren. While they’ll still have T.J. Watt to terrorize the young Dallas offensive line, the Steelers struggling run game is going to be without their No. 2 and No. 3 running backs behind the currently plodding Najee Harris.

Also out for Pittsburgh is TE MyCole Pruitt. Here’s the designations from both teams.

Injury update: Alex Highsmith planning to return in Week 7

Alex Highsmith has been estimated to return in the Week 7 game against the New York Jets. How will this affect Nick Herbig’s involvement?

Everyone stop what you’re doing! The Pittsburgh Steelers finally get some positive injury updates for a change!

As many Steelers fans are well aware, Alex Highsmith reaggravated a groin injury he sustained in the offseason during his team’s Week 3 contest versus the Los Angeles Chargers. This injury seemed to affect the Steelers’ pass rush heavily, struggling in Week 4 to pressure the Colts. This may soon change, however, as reporter Mark Kaboly stated that Highsmith now has an estimated return date.

For Week 7, the Pittsburgh Steelers are eyeing Highsmith to make his long-awaited return against the New York Jets.

While his return leaves some questions, such as whether he will be one hundred percent or if Nick Herbig will still factor into the defensive scheme in some way, Highsmith’s presence will be appreciated nonetheless.

Pittsburgh will need to make do without their star edge rusher for several weeks, starting with their Sunday Night Football matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, on October 6th, at 8:20 PM EST.

Steelers vs. Cowboys: Mike Tomlin rules Alex Highsmith out for Week 5

The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without EDGE Alex Highsmith for a second consecutive week as he battles a groin injury.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said the defense will be without EDGE Alex Highsmith for a second consecutive week.

Highsmith suffered a groin injury, the second of his career, during Pittsburgh’s Week 3 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac reported that Highsmith was expected to miss two to three games.

Highsmith wasn’t the only player missing versus the Indianapolis Colts — the entire defense was missing in action.

In Highsmith’s absence last week, second-year defender Nick Herbig got his first start but exited midway through the game with an ankle injury. DeMarvin Leal came in to fill the void on 22 snaps.

As usual, practice participation will determine whether Herbig will be ready to go versus the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.

Guard James Daniels was also ruled out for Week 5. Daniels suffered an Achilles tear during the Colts loss but has not yet been placed on injured reserve.

Steelers insider updates Alex Highsmith injury timeline

The Pittsburgh Steelers could be without outside linebacker Alex Highsmith for a few games.

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers could be without pass-rusher Alex Highsmith for up to two weeks.

Highsmith suffered a groin injury, the second of his career, during Pittsburgh’s win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Similar to 2023, Highsmith has been off to a slow start, having recorded one sack, a pass defended and 11 tackles in three games.

Expect Nick Herbig to get the bulk of the work, with DeMarvin Leal rotating in.

“I want to be 100%”: Alex Highsmith on return from injury

Alex Highsmith re-aggravated a groin injury in Week 3, and will wait until his body feels completely healed before returning.

While the Pittsburgh Steelers were victorious on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers, they didn’t walk away unscathed.  One of their best players on defense, Alex Highsmith, re-aggravated a groin injury that he had suffered in training camp and was forced out of the Week 3 contest at the end of the first half.

Highsmith was visibly frustrated as he left the medical tent, slamming his helmet down as he walked out.  His anger stems from what many believe could be a lengthy absence, one that Steelers fans hope will be sooner rather than later.  Highsmith stated that during the missed sack on Chargers QB Justin Herbert, something felt “different”.

https://twitter.com/MikeDeFabo/status/1838301968088932509

Highsmith appears to be taking the right approach, one that, while it may take some time, will see him fully healthy and hoping to make a difference when the Steelers make a postseason push.  In the meantime, the edge-rushing duties opposite T.J. Watt are in good hands, as Nick Herbig will look to keep his dominant performances going as the Steelers visit the Colts in Week 4, September 29th at 1:00 PM EST.

Nick Herbig was destructive in Week 3, but is anyone really surprised?

Nick Herbig was the most dominant player on the football field in Week 3.

Pittsburgh Steelers edge Nick Herbig was dominant off the right edge in Week 3. Herbig came in at the end of the first half to relieve Alex Highsmith, who suffered a groin injury against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Some viewers from the Week 3 contest may not truly understand just how destructive Herbig was in the Week 3 victory: 2 sacks, a forced fumble, and three quarterback pressures on just 8 pass-rush snaps.

This shouldn’t surprise Steelers fans, however, as he was just as dominant in the preseason: 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and six quarterback pressures on 22 pass-rush snaps throughout the three preseason games.

T.J. Watt also seems to understand that Herbig destroying defenses is just a norm we need to start accepting.

If Highsmith has to miss time with his groin injury, the edge position opposite Watt is in good hands. Herbig will continue to prove to himself, the coaches, and the fans that he deserves to be on the field as much as possible.

Steelers injury updates: Jaylen Warren pulled by Tomlin

Several Steelers suffered injuries in Sunday’s win over the Chargers.

After the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, head coach Mike Tomlin talked about the myriad of injuries Pittsburgh suffered over the course of the game.

The Steelers lost outside linebacker Alex Highsmith with a groin injury but his replacement Nick Herbig came in and got two sacks. Cornerback Cory Trice Jr. was lost with a hamstring injury and the unit rallied along with the Steelers pass rush to take the heat off the secondary.

Tomlin also noted that wide receiver Van Jefferson got poked in the eye but his vision cleared and he was able to return to the game. Jefferson had no targets or catches on Sunday.

In addition, Tomlin noted that running back Jaylen Warren got benched by Tomlin because of an ongoing injury issue. Warren was replaced by veteran Cordarrelle Patterson who played well down the stretch.

Next week the Steelers take on the Indianapolis Colts on the road.
