State of the Roster: Can 49ers defensive end depth step up?

Our State of the Roster continues with a look at a 49ers defensive end group that’s full of question marks.

With 49ers OTAs in full swing, we’re taking a position-by-position look at the team’s roster to figure out the strengths, weaknesses, potential dark horses to make the team and other nuggets about the players who will be competing for jobs on the 53-man roster.

It’s impossible to say whether the 49ers have enough in their defensive end room entering training camp. Their group of DEs all come with significant question marks as defensive line coach Kris Kocurek aims to work his magic again on underutilized pass rushers still trying to find their way in the NFL.

While San Francisco doesn’t have any sure things at DE behind Nick Bosa, there’s plenty of reason for optimism. Players like Samson Ebukam, Charles Omenihu, Kerry Hyder and Arden Key have all experienced breakout success while playing on the 49ers’ defensive line. There’s a chance the club sees similar results with this year’s DE group (non-Bosa division). That’s what they’re banking on, anyway.

There could be changes coming depending on how the team feels about its DEs once training camp starts, but lets look at what the 90-man roster looks like at that spot heading into camp:

49ers roster moves: TE George Kittle’s practice window opens

The San Francisco 49ers opened TE George Kittle’s practice window in the first step of getting him off Injured Reserve.

The San Francisco 49ers have opened the injured reserve practice window for star tight end George Kittle. He will now have the next three weeks to practice with the team before head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch must decide whether to reinstate him to the active roster or leave him on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

Opening his practice window before Week 15 gives the team some additional breathing room if they don’t make the playoffs. Kittle’s practice window will close when the season ends, so the 21 days will only come into play with a miraculous playoff run by San Francisco.

Kittle fractured his foot in the 49ers Week 7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, but the team has remained hopeful that he could eventually make a return to the field. In 6 games this season, Kittle has hauled in 37 receptions for 474 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The 49ers also signed DL Alex Barrett, CB Briean Boddy-Calhoun, DL Daeshon Hall, OL Aaron Neary and OL Isaiah Williams to the practice squad. Undrafted rookie TE Chase Harrell was let go from the practice squad.

49ers roster moves: DL, DB waived after Week 14 loss

A day after their 23-15 loss to the Washington Football Team, the San Francisco 49ers waived DL Alex Barrett and CB Briean Boddy-Calhoun.

A day after the team’s disapointing 23-15 loss to the Washington Football Team, the San Francisco 49ers have waived defensive lineman Alex Barrett and defensive back Briean Boddy-Calhoun.

Barrett played four defensive snaps on Sunday and registered one of the team’s few quarterback hits. On the season, he has appeared in five games, primarily on special teams and has recorded three tackles. He has spent the majority of the last year on the 49ers practice squad. Prior to this season, his only regular season experience came in a pair of games with the Detroit Lions in 2017.

Boddy-Calahan made his first appearance for the 49ers on Sunday, playing on 16 special teams snaps. Over his career, he has played in 47 games combined with the 49ers, Browns, Colts, and Texans recording 151 tackles, three sacks, and three interceptions.

Both will likely return to the 49ers practice squad after they clear waivers.

49ers drop DE for OL in roster move

The 49ers’ roster got another adjustment when they signed OL Spencer Long and released DE Alex Barrett.

The 49ers on Thursday continued their preseason roster tweaks by officially adding offensive lineman Spencer Long. Long’s agent initially announced the signing over the weekend. Because San Francisco’s roster is already at the maximum 80 players, they released defensive end Alex Barrett in a corresponding move.

Long will take over as a reserve interior lineman after Jake Brendel opted out. He entered the league as a third-round pick of the Washington Football Team in 2014. Long spent four seasons there, one with the Jets and then last season with Buffalo. He’s played in 67 games with 44 starts at guard and center. The 49ers will most likely use him as a backup center in training camp while Weston Richburg rehabs a knee injury he suffered late last season. Ben Garland will work in as the starter.

To make room for long, Barrett was waived for the second time in August. He was initially waived and then re-signed a couple days later. It looked like he might get a chance to compete for a spot on the back end of the roster, but San Francisco is more confident in their depth on the edges after signing former No. 3 overall pick Dion Jordan.

With padded practices set to begin Saturday, there are liable to be more roster moves coming down the line for the 49ers as they gear up for regular-season kickoff Sept. 13 at Levi’s Stadium.

49ers re-sign recently-released defensive lineman

The 49ers re-signed Alex Barrett just days after waiving him.

The 49ers on Sunday added a relatively familiar face to their roster. Defensive lineman Alex Barrett, who was waived Thursday, re-signed with San Francisco per an announcement from the team.

Barrett was waived the same day Leonard Wester was released and Jeff Wilson Jr. went on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

He originally joined the 49ers’ practice squad in late November last season, then re-signed in February before his most recent release. Now Barrett is back with the club to try and earn his way onto the roster. He signed with the Lions as an undrafted rookie in 2017 and spent time on their practice squad. Eventually Barrett went to the San Diego Fleet of the Alliance of American Football and posted a pair of sacks in eight games before the league folded.

Adding Barrett puts the 49ers’ roster at 80 players with Wilson and Richie James Jr. still on the reserve/COVID-19 list. They don’t count toward the roster while they’re on there.

Depth on the defensive line is important for the 49ers, so Barrett will have a real chance to make the club as a rotational piece if he puts together a strong camp. On-field workouts are set to begin in mid-August.
