Nick Bosa closing in on 49ers single-season sack record

Nick Bosa only needs 2.5 sacks the next two weeks to set the 49ers’ single-season franchise record.

Nick Bosa’s outstanding fourth season appears primed to culminate in a Defensive Player of the Year award. He could also bag a 49ers franchise record in the process.

With 17.5 sacks, Bosa leads the NFL and finds himself just 2.0 behind Aldon Smith’s franchise record of 19.5 sacks, which was set in the 2012 season.

If Bosa’s season so far is any indication, he’ll get there and possibly beyond with two games to go. He’s posted at least 1.0 sacks in 12 of the 14 games he’s played, and one of the games he didn’t was Week 5 in Carolina when he left halfway through the game with a groin issue. Bosa had 2.0 or more sacks in four of those contests. There’s a real chance he at least ties the record against the Raiders on Sunday, giving him a full game to try and set the record against the Cardinals in Week 18.

Perhaps the most impressive part of Bosa’s chase for the 49ers’ single-season record is that he won’t necessarily benefit from the 17-game schedule. He was out for San Francisco’s Week 6 game in Atlanta, putting him on track to play 16 games – the same number Smith played when he set the record in 2012.

As for the NFL record — that’s a little further off. Bosa would need 5.5 sacks in two games to break the record of 22.5 set by Michael Strahan in XXXX, and tied by Steelers DE TJ Watt last season. Getting there is not out of the realm of possibilities for the superstar DE, but he’ll start by chasing down Smith for the 49ers’ franchise record before setting his sights on something higher.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says Aldon Smith ‘couldn’t hold up his end’

Following last night’s preseason loss to the Raiders, coach Pete Carroll said the team gave him a chance, but Smith couldn’t hold up his end.

The Seahawks need all the pass rushers they can get. However, sometimes the cost of carrying the wrong kind of personnel is too high. Last week, Seattle released defensive end Aldon Smith, who’s had a troubled career off the field to say the least. While there’s no word on exactly what happened, it reportedly wasn’t for football reasons.

Seahawks vs. Raiders: 4 stories to follow in the first preseason game of 2021

Here are four angles we will be following throughout the game.

The Seahawks kick off their 2021 preseason schedule tomorrow night against the Raiders in Las Vegas. While it won’t count in the standings, there are several important storylines to keep an eye on, as they might impact what happens in the regular season.

Here are four angles we will be following throughout the game.

Cowboys News: Dak looking to dial back stats, Canady and Joseph look to step up at CB

Dak Prescott’s shoulder dominates news as he focuses on Tampa, Maurice Canady and Kelvin Joseph are making moves, Dalton Schultz’s injury. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Dak Prescott may not be leading the Cowboys offense as he continues to rest his right shoulder, but the quarterback is still in the driver’s seat as far as headlines. Prescott maintains that all the hand-wringing over news of a follow-up MRI is baseless and that he’ll be good to go for Tampa Bay on September 9th, but he does admit that he’s had to fall back into the mental-prep mode that got him through his recent ankle rehab. And he’s also decided that if he gets off to the kind of statistical start he did last year, it’s probably bad news for the team.

And what about the guys backing Prescott up? One outlet is openly questioning the wisdom of rolling into the 2021 season with only the committee of Gilbert/Rush/DiNucci behind him. Elsewhere, CeeDee Lamb is focused on development beyond making highlight-reel grabs, and cornerback/rapper Kelvin Joseph is searching for a drop-the-mic moment this preseason. Kellen Moore talks about how he’s hoping to use his stacked offense, Dalton Schultz tweaks an ankle, Maurice Canady is making a strong first impression a year after signing, and a former Cowboys comeback story looks like it’s ending before it even got started in Seattle. Here’s the News and Notes.

Report: Seattle Seahawks release Aldon Smith

Report: Seattle #Seahawks release Aldon Smith:

Amid ongoing legal troubles, defensive end Aldon Smith is set to be released by the Seattle Seahawks. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported the news:

In April, the Seahawks signed Smith to a one-year deal. Days after, the former No. 7 overall pick had a warrant issued for his arrest in Louisiana. Allegedly, Smith was involved in an altercation outside of a local coffee shop.

At this time, there has been no confirmation on the reasoning for Smith’s release, however, the pending legal situation is still looming.

Smith’s release comes after Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said the team intended to give Smith “every opportunity” to succeed.

The 31-year-old has a four-year absence from the NFL and the reasoning was because of prior off-field legal troubles.

After not showing up to spring workouts including mandatory minicamp, Smith first suited up for the Seahawks during training camp. During his first media availability, Smith decline to comment on the ongoing off-field situation.

Smith’s arraignment for the case was recently moved from July to Aug. 24.

Aldon Smith reporting to Seahawks training camp, but for how long?

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Aldon Smith is reporting to training camp, but will he remain on the roster for long with his legal issues?

Jamal Adams has reported to Seahawks training camp in the midst of discussions regarding a potential contract extension, but he is not the only veteran player to report for duty.

Defensive end Aldon Smith, signed by the Seahawks in April, is also ready to go for training camp, per ESPN’s Brady Henderson. A former seventh overall pick, Smith had a somewhat resurgent season with the Cowboys in 2020 after not seeing the field for four years. He could certainly provide some firepower to the Seahawks’ defensive line this upcoming season.

However, Smith’s myriad of legal issues has been well-documented. Smith spent the 2016 and 2017 seasons with the Raiders but did not play a down due to a suspension for a hit-and-run and the organization released him in 2018 for a domestic violence incident. Smith remained a free agent until the 2020 season when Dallas scooped him up and the NFL reinstated him.

This is certainly not the first time Seattle has signed a player with a troubled history, but Smith is particularly controversial. Smith was arrested again this offseason, this time for second-degree felony battery. His arraignment on the new charges has been moved to August, after it was initially scheduled for July 14.

Smith is under a one-year, $1.1 million contract with the Seahawks, which they can shed quite easily, leaving only $137,500 in dead cap if they release him in the event that he is convicted. If he is able to play for 2021, fans can only hope he will make sufficient contributions to the defense.

Seahawks DE Aldon Smith released on bond after turning himself in

Seattle Seahawks DE Aldon Smith has been released on bond after turning himself in pending charges of second-degree battery.

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Aldon Smith, wanted on suspicion of battery, surrendered himself to authorities at the St. Bernard Parish Prison on Tuesday evening.

He was booked on charges of second-degree battery and released on a $25,000 bond.

According to the sheriff’s office, Smith allegedly assaulted an acquaintance Saturday night outside of a coffee shop.

Smith has notified the Seahawks of his charge and the team has already issued a statement, but won’t be commenting further on the matter.

“We are aware of the reports regarding Aldon Smith,” the statement reads. “Aldon notified us and we are gathering more information. We have no further comment at this time.”

The Seahawks signed Smith to a one-year deal for the veteran minimum just last week.

This story is continuing to develop.

Arrest warrant issued for Aldon Smith in Louisiana

Aldon Smith, who recently signed with Seattle Seahawks, has an arrest warrant out in his name in Louisiana.

An arrest warrant has been issued in Louisiana for Aldon Smith, who recently signed with the Seattle Seahawks.

Smith is alleged to have committed second-degree battery in the New Orleans area on Saturday.

The St. Bernard Parish District Attorney’s Office said the incident was captured on camera.

According to a wanted bulletin from the St. Bernard Parish Sherriff that was shared by WDSU, Smith does not have a local address but has relatives in the New Orleans area.

The alleged incident rises to a second-degree battery because the victim was rendered unconscious,  St. Bernard Parish District Attorney Perry Nicosi told ESPN. He said the victim was taken to a hospital but did not have to stay overnight.

“We are aware of the reports regarding Aldon Smith. Aldon notified us and we are gathering more information. We have no further comment at this time,” the Seahawks said in a statement.

Smith, 31, signed a one-year deal with the Seahawks on April 15. He played for the Dallas Cowboys in 2020 after being out of the NFL for a variety of incidents and suspensions since the 2015 season.

Seahawks issue statement after reports of Aldon Smith’s arrest warrant

The Seattle Seahawks have issued a statement after reports of defensive Aldon Smith’s arrest warrant in Louisiana.

The Seattle Seahawks have issued a statement in the wake of the warrant issued for new defensive end Aldon Smith’s arrest.

“We are aware of the reports regarding Aldon Smith,” the statement reads. “Aldon notified us and we are gathering more information. We have no further comment at this time.”

According to reports, the arrest warrant for second-degree battery was issued by the St. Bernard Parish in Louisiana following an incident alleged to have occurred at a coffee house on the evening of April 17.

Smith is no stranger to the legal system having faced multiple criminal charges in the past. This latest incident is believed to have taken place just days after Smith signed his contract with Seattle.

This situation is continuing to develop.

Arrest warrant for alleged battery issued for Seahawks DE Aldon Smith

Newly acquired Seattle Seahawks defensive end Aldon Smith finds himself in legal trouble after a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Newly acquired Seattle Seahawks defensive end Aldon Smith has not even been with the team for a week and he is already making headlines . . . albeit for less than stellar reasons.

In a surprising news drop on Monday morning, Travers Mackel of WDSU – New Orleans’ NBC affiliate – reported there has been a warrant for Aldon Smith’s arrest in St. Bernard Parish in Louisiana.

This is not just a potential hit for the Seattle Seahawks – who were enjoying the deepest collection of pass rush talent in years – but for Smith’s journey back to the NFL. Legal issues have completely marred what could have been a tremendous career.

Aldon Smith was a disruptive force for San Francisco from 2011-2014, but his time with the Niners ended following his third DUI arrest. Smith went across the Bay in 2015 to play for the then-Oakland Raiders, but received a year-long suspension due to a hit-and-run charge.

It would be the last time Smith played football for the next four seasons, until his return as a member of the Dallas Cowboys. He played in all 16 games, and his 5.0 sacks were a lone bright spot on one of the league’s worst defenses.

Now Smith finds himself back in legal jeopardy. While it is certainly far too early to see how the legal process will play out, it’s important to note second chances don’t often present themselves in the NFL . . . and Smith has had his, as well as third, fourth, and fifth chances.

Perhaps this is the proverbial straw that will break NFL teams’ backs and they’ll realize perhaps the juice just isn’t worth the squeeze when it comes to Aldon Smith.

SeahawksWire will continue to update as this story unfolds.
