Bama Report Card: Grading Alabama’s win over New Mexico State

Bama Report Card: Grading Alabama’s win over New Mexico State

The Tide easily handled the Aggies of New Mexico State 59-3 on Saturday. In matchups like this, it’s hard to be overly critical or overly positive on the Crimson Tide because they simply accomplished what needed to be accomplished.

Nevertheless, we are back with our weekly report card on the performance of the Alabama Crimson Tide!

Let’s get right to it!

First …the offense…

3 superlatives from Alabama’s 59-3 stomping of New Mexico State

3 superlatives from Alabama’s 59-3 stomping of New Mexico State

It wasn’t the most anticipated matchup of the season for the Tide, but Alabama handled their business defeating New Mexico State 59-3.

With the win, Alabama improves to 9-1 on the season and will play its final home game of the season next week against Arkansas.

Each week we usually look at what we learned from that week’s contest, this week I decided to change things up a little bit. This week let’s look at three superlatives from Alabama’s dominating win.

First …B-Rob’s explosive run…

5 players to watch during Alabama vs. New Mexico State

5 players to watch as Alabama takes on the New Mexico State Aggies

Alabama’s final non-conference matchup against New Mexico State doesn’t exactly get the blood boiling with excitement. But it is the next opportunity for the Tide to take the field and show signs of improvement.

Last week’s ugly win over LSU has many Tide fans a little skeptical about just how much the 2021 version of the Crimson Tide can accomplish. I’ll admit, I also have my own reservations about this team, but if we look at this through the lens of common sense we will come to the conclusion that Nick Saban is still the head man, and the roster is still loaded with talent. That alone should restore some hope among the Tide faithful.

Speaking of the roster, I thought we could take a look at a few players that I believe we should keep our eye on as the boys from Bama take on the Aggies of New Mexico State.

The last of the non-conference slate will be wrapped up this weekend against the New Mexico State Aggies. And while this matchup doesn’t move the needle, it gives the Tide an opportunity to clean up mistakes and get back on track after last week’s struggle win over LSU.

Here is how you can make sure not to miss any of the action!

For obvious reasons, the Alabama vs. New Mexico State game isn’t the most anticipated matchup of the weekend. I do think that Alabama’s performance last week has Tide fans a little more intrigued than before.

The Crimson Tide faithful are looking for the team to get back to its more dominating ways this Saturday against a much inferior opponent in New Mexico State. The Aggies sit with an abysmal 1-8 record this season.

Alabama should have no problem handling the Aggies.

Stacey Blackwood Alabama 3-3 Alabama 5-1
Layne Gerbig Alabama 3-3 Alabama 5-1

AJ Spurr

Alabama has three games remaining, with the final two against SEC opponents that cannot be overlooked. Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide will use the New Mexico State game as an opportunity to get things in order. Anticipate some new looks from the offense and defense.

Stacey Blackwood

Alabama shouldn’t have much problem with the 1-8 Aggies. Sound, fundamental football is all I am looking for from the Tide. Don’t be surprised if some new faces emerge in the lineup.

Alabama 63, New Mexico State 6

Layne Gerbig

This game will likely play as a scrimmage. Alabama will look to polish up their game and take corrective action before continuing SEC play against Arkansas and Auburn. Don’t expect an exciting nail-biter here.

What Nick Saban said in his Wednesday press conference

What Nick Saban said in his Wednesday press conference leading up to Alabama’s matchup with the New Mexico State Aggies.

Moments ago Alabama head coach Nick Saban addressed the media in his usual Wednesday evening time slot.

As usual, Saban began the press conference with an opening statement then proceeded to answer a handful of questions from members of the media.

Below are a few items the coach touched on.

  • With Thursday being Veterans Day, Saban thanked all the veterans for their service.
  • Saban mentioned that his thoughts and prayers were with Cecil Hurt and his family as the long-time Alabama beat writer is currently in the hospital battling pneumonia.
  • Starting center Darrian Dalcourt remains day-to-day.
  • Seth McLaughlin would be the next man up at center according to coach Saban. Saban also mentioned that McLaughlin has all the intangibles the coaching staff is looking for in a center.
  • On Jahleel Billingsley’s dip in production, Saban mentioned that Billingsley needs to play faster and make better of the opportunities that he is given. Saban also said that Billingsley can certainly be an asset for the Alabama offense.
  • On the offensive line and running backs, Saban said that each group has responded well this week, but also mentioned that the entire team needs to play better.
