On this day in Celtics history, Shelden Williams and Gene Englund were born, a number of players debuted and John Hazen passed.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, former Boston big man Shelden Williams was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1983.

An alum of the Duke Blue Devils where he won NABC Defensive Player of the Year honors twice and made First Team All-American among other honors, Williams was taken fifth overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2006 NBA draft. He would play parts of two seasons before being dealt to the Sacramento Kings in February of 2009, and the Oklahoman would later be dealt to the Minnesota Timberwolves as well.

He would sign with the Celtics as an unrestricted free agent in August of that same year.

Today’s installment focuses on the four players who wore No. 22 over the years as of August 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball, their unretired jersey numbers pack some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the four players who wore No. 22 over the years as of August 2023.

On this day: Garnett, Pierce, Terry traded; Silas, Riebe, Wallace born; Butler passes

On this day, the Boston Celtics dealt away the remainder of their 2008 title team to the Brooklyn Nets in one of the most lopsided trades in NBA history.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the storied franchise dealt away the remainder of the Banner 17 title team in 2013. The Celtics traded big man Kevin Garnett, forward Paul Pierce, guard Jason Terry, and forward D.J. White to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for forwards Gerald Wallace and Kris Humphries, wing Keith Bogans, guard MarShon Brooks, forward Kris Joseph.

The deal would also include three future first-round draft picks and the right to swap first-round picks in the 2017 NBA draft. The move put an end to a 15-season career with the team for Pierce, and six for Garnett: Terry and White had played just one season each with Boston.

One of the most lopsided trades in NBA history, the Celtics would begin using the haul to rebuild immediately. Only out of the playoffs for a single season, team president at that time Danny Ainge pulled off one of the better jobs rebuilding a program after its core aged out in modern league memory.

On this day: Johnson, Jerebko signed; Lee trade; Paxson, Mickey born

On this day in 2015, the Boston Celtics signed Amir Johnson and Jonas Jerebko and traded for David Lee.

On this date in Boston Celtics history, the team signed big man Amir Johnson to a two-year, $24 million contract. The Los Angeles native had previously played for the Toronto Raptors for the previous six seasons before decamping to the Celtics, and the Detroit Pistons for four more before that after being drafted directly out of high school by that team 56th overall in the 2005 NBA draft.

Johnson was a key part of the franchise’s post-Banner 17 rebuild, anchoring the team’s interior as a veteran presence while averaging 6.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 0.9 blocks per game.

Johnson would leave the team in free agency to join the Philadelphia 76ers in the summer of 2017.
