Wisconsin basketball starts the year with exhibition route of UW Stevens-Point

The Badgers start the season with an exhibition win

Wisconsin officially starts their season on Monday, November 6 when Arkansas State comes to town, but the Badgers were on the court for the first time on Wednesday in an exhibition win over UW Stevens Point.

The Badgers took down the Pointers 87-44, and were able to get minutes for the entirety of the active roster in the win.

St. John’s transfer AJ Storr led the way offensively with 14 points on 5-7 from the field and a pair of made threes. Steven Crowl and Connor Essegian were the other two Badgers in double figures. The starting five consisted of Storr, Crowl, Chucky Hepburn, Max Klesmit, and Tyler Wahl with Essegian as the first man off the pine.

Storr showed off his shooting and ability to get above the rim:

Badgers face early gauntlet on the court

The Badgers men’s basketball team is just a few weeks away from their season opener versus UW-Stevens Point on Nov. 1 and their early schedule is not easy, on paper that is.

Wisconsin will square off with four ranked programs within their first 10 matchups of the 2023-2024 campaign, including in-state rival Marquette on Dec. 2.

Greg Gard’s squad just had their Red-White scrimmage on Sunday with the White team winning 69-51. Most notably, new additions transfer forward AJ Storr (St. John’s) and freshman big man Nolan Winter scored 15 and 13 points respectively.

The Badgers will look to get off to hot start in 2023 to leave their disappointing 2022-2023 campaign in the dust.

The Badger transfer shines at the Red and White Scrimmage

Wisconsin basketball got the party started on Sunday at the Kohl Center with their annual Red and White Scrimmage.

Wisconsin matches up with each other in an open practice and scrimmage for fans to get their first look at the new Badger squad.

While there are many returners expected to play big roles, one of the most exciting new faces is AJ Storr, the transfer from St. John’s. Storr is a three-level scorer who can sky, and should give Badger fans plenty of highlights.

Here is a look at his first highlight at the Kohl Center, coming on a lob from Kamari McGee:

Badgers MBB Big Ten schedule released

Badgers’ MBB Big Ten schedule has arrived

The 2023-2024 men’s basketball season is around the corner and the Badgers released their Big Ten schedule for the upcoming campaign Tuesday. Wisconsin will begin their conference play Dec. 5 versus the Michigan State Spartans.

Their season will begin with a contest with UW-Stevens Point on Nov. 1 and the Badgers will officially turn the page on a disappointing 2022-2023 campaign.

Last year, Wisconsin finished with a 20-15 overall record, missing the NCAA Tournament. In conference contests, they finished 9-11 and were 11th in the Big Ten.

Now in 2023, the whole starting lineup will return as well as additions like A.J. Storr (St. John’s) and freshmen Gus Yalden, Nolan Winter and John Blackwell.

WATCH: Big Ten Network features new Badger AJ Storr

The new Badger wing spent time with the Bahamian national team this offseason

Wisconsin made a massive splash this offseason in bringing in St. John’s transfer AJ Storr. The former four-star recruit averaged 8.8 points per game last season with the Red Storm, and brings athleticism, creativity, and three-level scoring to Wisconsin basketball in 2023.

Over the offseason, Storr had the chance to represent his father’s home country on the court. The Wisconsin basketball wing put on the Bahamas national team jersey in a pair of games against Kansas in early August.

Storr is on the Olympics pre-qualifying roster for the Bahamas alongside NBA players such as Deandre Ayton, Kai Jones, and Buddy Heild. Here is a look at the Big Ten Network feature on Storr:

WATCH: Introduction to new Badgers guard

What’s in Storr for transfer guard?

The Badgers men’s basketball team will look very familiar in 2023, but new addition transfer guard A.J. Storr will look to make a splash in his first season in Madison.

Storr spent the 2022 season with St. John’s but he’ll be with the Badgers this year after transferring this offseason. He averaged 8.8 points per game in his freshman campaign with St. John’s and he’ll look to improve upon that with Wisconsin.

Additionally, he had the opportunity to play with the Bahamian National Team this month, recording 30 points over two exhibition games against the Kansas Jayhawks.

It’s unclear what role he’ll have in Madison, but the 6-foot-6 high-flyer will likely have a substantial impact on Greg Gard’s squad.

The Badgers men’s basketball team got a transfer addition in guard A.J. Storr from St. John’s this offseason and the 6-foot-6 athlete hosted his first annual youth camp this week.

Storr just returned to the states last week after he scored 30 points over two exhibition games against Kansas as a member of the Bahamian National Team.

During his one season with St. John’s, the guard appeared in 33 games, including 17 starts, while averaging 8.8 points and 1.9 rebounds.

It’s unclear if he’ll instantly be a starter with Greg Gard’s Badgers this year, but Storr will bring a high-flying playstyle to the Kohl Center in 2023 regardless of role.

Badger guard becomes coach

Entering the 2023-2024 college basketball season, a lot of attention has been paid to the incoming members of the Badgers men’s basketball team, but a returning member announced the end of his playing career Saturday.

Justin Taphorn was set to be entering his fourth season with the Badgers, but the 6-foot-5 athlete will now become an undergraduate assistant coach for the team this year.

With guards A.J. Storr (St. John’s transfer) and John Blackwell (freshman) entering the picture, Taphorn likely saw his chances to play becoming slim, so he figured a new way to contribute to Greg Gard and the team in 2023.

LOOK: Badgers MBB non-conference schedule released

How will the Badgers fair in their non-conference schedule in 2023?

The 2023 college basketball season is still a couple months away, but the Badgers men’s basketball non-conference schedule has been announced.

Greg Gard and his Wisconsin squad are looking to return to the National Tournament after missing it last year. They did end up advancing all the way to the semifinals of the NIT though, losing to the eventual winners North Texas 56-54.

Now with the entire starting lineup returning in 2023 in addition to some add-ons like A.J. Storr and the four incoming freshman, they’ll look to get the train back on track.

The non-conference slate includes top squads like Tennessee, Marquette and Arizona.

LOOK: Wisconsin transfer G A.J. Storr reveals this season’s look

Jersey number revealed for AJ Storr:

Wisconsin released the new jersey numbers for its incoming freshmen earlier this week. The program’s class of 2023, led by top center Gus Yalden, is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 57 class in the nation. With Greg Gard’s team lacking for depth at times over the last few seasons, this group figures to make an impact from day one.

The other offseason addition made by Gard and his staff is undoubtedly the most significant of them all. It’s St. John’s transfer guard A.J. Storr. The rising sophomore already showed promise in his first collegiate season, and now enters a system where he could become a focal point of the offense.

All that, and he is already the most athletic player on the team.

Wisconsin released Friday that Storr will wear No. 2 this season in Madison:

Storr brings previously-mentioned athleticism to the Badgers, in addition to high-percentage shooting and tons of offensive upside. Wisconsin doesn’t often get out during the break and throw down highlight-reel dunks. A.J. Storr changes that instantly.
