Where Michigan football ranks in latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Michigan is off to a great start! #GoBlue

It was a good week for Michigan football. The Wolverines remained undefeated and broke their losing streak in Kinnick Stadium by defeating Iowa, 27-14, on Saturday.

In the Big Ten, Ohio State maintained its winning ways by beating Rutgers. Penn State stayed undefeated, beating Northwestern in a low-scoring affair. And Minnesota laid an egg against Purdue after being ranked the previous week.

Nationally, Georgia squeaked out a win against Missouri, Alabama took care of Arkansas and Kansas remained undefeated after beating Iowa State.

Oklahoma and Texas A&M took their second loss of the season, which dropped both out of the top 25.

You can see below what the results of Week 5 did to the USA TODAY Coaches Poll through Week 5.

Where Michigan football ranks in latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

It was a crazy week in college football, that’s for sure.

It wasn’t a pretty win for Michigan football in Week 4, as the Wolverines took down the Maryland Terrapins, 34-27. But the maize and blue weren’t alone in the ugly win category on Saturday.

Georgia merely beat Kent State, 39-22. Clemson held on for dear life against Wake Forest. Oklahoma lost to Kansas State. USC outlasted Oregon State. Arkansas lost to Texas A&M, Penn State was OK beating Central Michigan 33-14. Texas lost to Texas Tech, Michigan State was annihilated by Minnesota, and Miami lost to Middle Tennessee. Thus, there was a lot of movement in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Of course, since Alabama and Ohio State rolled, they were still going to be ranked highly. But what of the rest? Did any of them move, including Michigan?

Here is the full ranking below.

Michigan football moves up in latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Did #Michigan move up, down, or stay the same? #GoBlue

Michigan football has done precisely what it was supposed to in each of the first three weeks of the 2022 college football season, facing down overmatched opponents and dominating them.

On Saturday, it was UConn’s turn. The Wolverines had the game won by halftime, and ended up shuffling in 101 players, including eight quarterbacks, seven of whom completed a pass. While the maize and blue will not get much credit for beating three of the worst teams in college football, that Michigan has done so convincingly assuredly will endear them in the eyes of the coaches across the sport.

Last week, the Wolverines were No. 5 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, despite coming in at No. 4 in the AP Top 25. Will the coaches match the media this week?

Turns out, yes.

Michigan ranks No. 4 heading into Week 4. Meanwhile, future opponents Ohio State and Penn State rank third and 15th, respectively. Michigan State is down to 21st the poll after getting beaten decisively by Washington.

Here is the full ranking.

Where Michigan football ranks in latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

#Michigan did what it was supposed to and the poll reflects that. #GoBlue

What a wild ride Week 2 was for the bulk of college football.

While Michigan football did everything it was supposed to do, winning handily against an overmatched Hawaii team, other teams weren’t so lucky.

Granted, the Wolverines did not beat the lofty spread, but that was due to backups being in for the entire second half. Meanwhile, Texas A&M and Notre Dame flat-out lost to lesser teams, putting either a damper on or closing the door completely on their College Football Playoff chances.

With that in mind, the college football coaches continued to be keen on the Wolverines, ranking them No. 5 in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. Future opponents ranked this week are Ohio State at No. 3, Penn State at No. 23 and Michigan State at No. 9.

Michigan football moves up, Ohio State moves down in USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Good week for #Michigan football! #GoBlue

Michigan football had an emphatic start to the 2022 season on Saturday when it took down Colorado State, 51-7. Yes, the competition wasn’t exactly next-level, but the Wolverines came in and did precisely what they were supposed to do: dominate a lesser opponent.

The defense looked particularly sharp, on the heels of seven sacks and 11 tackles for loss, and the pressure came from all three levels on that side of the ball. The offense left something to be desired, performing OK, but not necessarily looking as sharp as its counterpart.

On Tuesday, once the dust had settled from all of the Week 1 games, the coaches across the sport finally came together to reveal their top 25. In the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, the maize and blue moved up from No. 6 to fifth on the heels of the impressive performance. Meanwhile, despite beating Notre Dame, Ohio State moved down from No. 2 to No. 3 — in part due to Georgia’s throttling of Oregon.

Alabama takes top spot in USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

No surprises at the top with the preseason coaches poll being released.

With less than a month left until the start of the 2022 college football season, we finally have the preseason coaches poll. It was released on Monday.

In a not-so-surprising turn of events, the Alabama Crimson Tide take the top spot as many believed would be the case. The defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs take the No. 3 spot in the initial poll. Overall there are six SEC teams in the top 25 and three in the top 10. The Texas A&M Aggies debut at No. 7. Another five SEC teams led by the Tennessee Vols received votes on the preseason coaches poll.

Michigan football one of the top teams in preseason USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Too low. #GoBlue

The telltale signs that college football season is nearly upon us continue to mount, with Big Ten media days having taken place two weeks ago, fall camp having begun, and now, the next step has taken place.

The preseason USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll dropped on Monday afternoon, showing the college football world what the expectations are across the sport. While there’s certain to be dramatic changes once the season is underway — highly-ranked teams won’t be ranked at all, while those who weren’t even in the top 25 will find themselves up near the top — it’s a good barometer of where teams stand, or at least how they’re thought of as they approach the 2022 season. Last year, Michigan was one of those unranked teams, only to finish third overall, thanks to beating Ohio State and making the College Football Playoff.

But how are the Wolverines thought of heading into this new season? Not top in the Big Ten, but certainly up there. The maize and blue checked in at No. 6 overall, behind only Ohio State at No. 2 in the conference. MSU and Wisconsin are the only other Big Ten teams ranked at No. 14 and 20, respectively. Iowa is the first one receiving votes not in the top 25, followed immediately by Penn State.

Alabama finishes No. 2 in final AFCA Coaches Poll

Alabama’s final ranking in the AFCA Coaches Poll.

The college football season is over and the Georgia Bulldogs are national champions. Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide fell short in the College Football Playoff title game and will now look ahead to the 2022 season.

With plenty of amazing games and storylines to follow, 2021 did not disappoint.

The final USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll will stand until the beginning of next season, and plenty of changes are expected to happen in the next edition.

Michigan State football only played in one game in the last month, but it was a big one, and enough to move them up the rankings in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. The Spartans’ win over Pitt put them back squarely in the top ten at No. 8, up two spots from their last rankings.

Conversely, Pitt fell one spot to No. 13.

Georgia, of course, will end the season as the unanimous No. 1 team in the country after beating Alabama on Monday night to win the national championship.
