Texans claim running back Eno Benjamin off waivers

Benjamin was waived by the #Cardinals this week and was claimed by the #Texans on Tuesday

The Houston Texans claimed talented running back Eno Benjamin off waivers by way of the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday, adding even more depth to their burgeoning backfield led by rookie star Dameon Pierce. Their running game has been a major strength for the team so far in 2022 and can be considered one of the best in the NFL with Pierce ranking among the top 10 in rushing yards through nine games.

Benjamin will be hard-pressed to find a significant workload with the Texans, but too much depth is never an issue for any team at the midway point in the season. He has found success in limited action since entering the league as a seventh-round pick in the 2020 draft.

Though he hasn’t lived up to the hype that built around him following a storied career at Arizona State, he has shown the same burst at the pro level that made him a star for the Sun Devils in college. Standing just five-foot-nine inches tall, Benjamin is an elusive back with the ability to find even the smallest holes made by an offensive line and though he might not be a track star, has enough speed to fight for the edge on every play.

He comes into a tumultuous situation in Houston where the 1-7-1 Texans are grasping at straws to jumpstart their floundering offense. Benjamin is unlikely to be activated against the Washington Commanders unless he shows signs of brilliance in practice this week that would warrant his inclusion in the gameday roster ahead of Rex Burkhead and Dare Ogunbowale on the depth chart.

Though this move is hardly a blockbuster acquisition that would help the Texans compete in a meaningful way in the short term, Benjamin’s addition is a clear sign that Houston is leaning into their tendency to favor the run amid mounting speculation of a potential quarterback change in the coming weeks.

Frank Clark ‘ecstatic’ over Chiefs’ addition of Carlos Dunlap

#Chiefs DE Frank Clark is quite excited by the team’s decision to sign free agent DE Carlos Dunlap.

The Kansas City Chiefs made a big addition to the defensive line this past week, signing veteran edge rusher Carlos Dunlap on a one-year deal.

Dunlap has yet to arrive at Chiefs training camp, but as soon as he does join the team, he’ll be welcomed with open arms by his teammates. That includes Chiefs DE Frank Clark, who told reporters that he was ecstatic to add Dunlap to the team.

“I know Carlos (Dunlap) has 96 career sacks,” Clark said. “That’s a hell of a number. I’m ecstatic about him coming in, what he’s going to be able to bring to this team, his veteran skills, the knowledge.”

Clark has been the veteran in the room in Kansas City, working with rookies like George Karlaftis and Kehinde Oginni Hassan late every day after training camp practice. Clark, however, thinks he’s still got room to learn something himself from Dunlap.

“I’m going to pick his brain,” Clark said. “I’ve had a few veterans come in at this point kind of in the camp time (with) weird one-year deals. In the past, I’ve had Suggs (Terrell Suggs) here obviously. T-Sizz is my dawg. Shoutout Suggs. I’ve had – in Seattle – Dwight Freeney. I’ve had some good vets come in.”

Ultimately, Clark expects big things from Dunlap, who is going into his 13th season in the NFL. Clark knows better than most that Dunlap is coming from a system that can translate well with the Chiefs. He’s especially looking forward to the havoc that the two can cause on third down.

“Having another guy like Carlos come in, it’s going to be special just to see what he can do, see him in these colors,” Clark said. “He’s coming from Seattle, so he’s coming from a great system over there with (Seahawks Head Coach) Pete Carroll and he understands what’s to come with (Head Coach) Andy Reid. It’s something to look forward to. I can’t wait to see that on third-down, what’s going on.”

Notre Dame Folk Hero Signs with Super Bowl Champion Chiefs

The former Notre Dame punter spent last pre-season with the Chargers but was cut after their four pre-season games.  Newsome averaged 42.1 yards per punt in his seven punts last pre-season.

Perhaps there hasn’t been a more noticeable haircut at Notre Dame since Jeff Samardzija’s mane was busy catching touchdown passes from Brady Quinn.

Former Notre Dame punter and a bit of a Fighting Irish folk hero, Tyler Newsome was announced to have officially signed a deal with the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs on Monday.

Newsome gets remembered for his haircut that Billy Ray Cyrus would have probably been jealous of in 1992 or for his impressive ability to bench press.

However, Newsome was also a fantastic punter during his time at Notre Dame.  He holds several records including the most yards per punt (44.2) in school history and for the highest average punt yardage in a single game, averaging 59.6 yards per punt in Notre Dame’s 2018 win over Vanderbilt.
