Report: Woody Johnson won’t sit in on Jets’ head-coaching interviews

Woody Johnson is not expected to play a key role in hiring the Jets’ next head coach.

Soon, the Atlantic Ocean will no longer separate Woody Johnson from his Jets, but the owner is going to keep his distance anyway.

Johnson is not expected to participate in New York’s head-coaching interviews, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Instead, GM Joe Douglas, president Hymie Elhai and CEO Christopher Johnson — Woody’s younger brother and acting owner — will handle the search and keep the elder Johnson apprised.

Multiple reports say that Douglas’ opinion will carry the most weight, though Christopher Johnson will naturally have to sign off.

Woody Johnson is currently finishing up his term as outgoing President Donald Trump’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom. There had been plenty of speculation the last few years over how the Jets’ ownership structure could be impacted by a Trump loss in the 2020 election. For now, it looks like Johnson will not be too involved as his diplomatic responsibilities near their end and the Jets begin searching for Adam Gase’s replacement.

Christopher Johnson, Joe Douglas met with Jets players after firing Adam Gase

Christopher Johnson and Joe Douglas assured Jets players they’ll hire the right coach.

Christopher Johnson and Joe Douglas met with Jets players Monday morning and assured them they will hire the “right coach.”

New York officially fired Adam Gase on Sunday after two losing seasons. The Jets will conduct another coaching search, one that is expected to be lengthy and thorough, with the hopes of landing a head coach who can lead the franchise in the right direction.

Based on the meeting, Connor McGovern got the sense that the Jets are looking for a “CEO kind of guy” to steer the ship, per The Athletic’s Connor Hughes. Gase’s main focus was on his offense, leaving the defense entirely to Gregg Williams before he was fired at the end of the season.

George Fant acknowledged on Monday that the Jets need a culture change. Fant, who previously played for the Seahawks, said Seattle has a phenomenal culture. However, Fant is “really confident” that Johnson and Douglas will find the right head coach, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

There are plenty of head coaching candidates that the Jets can take a look at. On the NFL level, Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy, Colts DC Matt Eberflus, Ravens DC Don Martindale, Bills OC Brian Daboll and Titans OC Arthur Smith are just some of the names the Jets could target, per NFL Network. Northwestern HC Pat Fitzgerald and Iowa State HC Matt Campbell could draw interest as well.

Former Vols’ quarterbacks serving as Jets’ assistants now available

The Jets parted ways with head coach Adam Gase following the regular season finale.

New York (2-14) lost to New England, 28-14, to conclude the 2020 regular season.

The Jets parted ways with head coach Adam Gase following the regular season finale.

“This evening, I informed Adam Gase he will no longer serve as the Head Coach of the Jets,” Jets Chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson said. “During his time here, I had the pleasure to get to know Adam and his wonderful family and wish them nothing but the best moving forward.  While my sincere intentions are to have stability in our organization – especially in our leadership positions – it is clear the best decision for the Jets is to move in a different direction. We knew there was a lot of work that needed to be done when Adam joined us in 2019. Our strong finish last year was encouraging, but unfortunately, we did not sustain that positive momentum or see the progress we all expected this season.

“To our fans, it is obvious we have not been good enough. We are committed to building a strong organization, on and off the field, and will continue to provide the necessary resources to field a team that you can be proud of.”

Former University of Tennessee quarterback Jim Bob Cooter served as the Jets’ running backs coach for Gase. After Cooter’s collegiate playing career came to an end in 2006, he served as a graduate assistant at Tennessee from 2007-08.

Another former Vols’ quarterback (2004-07), Bo Hardegree, also worked under Gase. Hardegree served as an offensive assistant with the Jets.

The pair of former Tennessee quarterbacks’ future with the Jets is uncertain if New York’s new head coach elects to hire their own staff.

Tennessee currently has two openings on its coaching staff with the offensive and defensive line units. Wide receivers coach Tee Martin and inside linebackers coach Brian Niedermeyer have expiring contracts on Jan. 31.

La’Mical Perine, Mekhi Becton like post announcing Adam Gase’s dismissal

Jets players like Ty Johnson and La’Mical Perine took to Instagram to react to the news of Adam Gase’s dismissal on Sunday evening.

When head coaches are fired, some send their well wishes and some rejoice.

Christopher Johnson relieved Adam Gase of his duties on Sunday evening, and news started to surface just 20 minutes after the Jets arrived back at the team facility in Florham Park, according to running back Ty Johnson’s Instagram page.

Johnson wasn’t the only player to react to the news of Gase’s firing. La’Mical Perine initially liked an Instagram post, which announced New York’s decision to part ways with Gase. Mekhi Becton also liked a tweet detailing the same information.

Back in October, after Le’Veon Bell’s Twitter likes following his return to the starting lineup blew up, Perine followed suit. The fourth-round pick out of Flordia liked a tweet that questioned Gase’s odd explanation for the rookie’s minimal usage out of the backfield.

Becton’s trainer, meanwhile, took issue with how Gase handled an injury to the offensive linemen earlier in the season.

During his two-year tenure in New York, where he went 9-23, Gase rubbed some players in the building the wrong way, while others enjoyed playing for him. Quincy Enunwa and Kelechi Osemele were not appreciative of the way their injuries were handled, while Jamal Adams badmouthed Gase on his way out the door. Then there’s Bell and Perine, who let their social media likes do the talking. There were also instances of Gase clashing with players in Miami.

As for Sam Darnold and Tarell Basham, they recently expressed how much they enjoyed playing for their now-former head coach.

Twitter reacts after Jets fire Adam Gase

Here’s how Jets fans reacted to the news of Adam Gase being fired.

It’s been brewing for weeks now, but the Jets have finally fired head coach Adam Gase after two years.

Gase finished his Jets tenure with a 9-23 record and failed to make the playoffs in each of his two seasons. The Jets got off to their worst start in franchise history at 0-13 this year until finally winning their first game in Week 15 against the Rams. New York was able to win one more game the following week against the Browns but ultimately couldn’t do enough to save his job. Now, the Jets will look for yet another head coach this offseason.

Jets fans, the majority displeased with Gase since the beginning, took to social media to voice their satisfaction with the firing on Sunday night.

Adam Gase finishes with third-worst winning percentage in Jets history

Adam Gase finished his Jets tenure with the third-worst winning percentage among all-time Jets head coaches.

Adam Gase will be remembered as one of the worst head coaches in Jets history.

Gase, fired following Sunday’s 28-14 loss against the Patriots and a 2-14 campaign, went 9-23 in two seasons with the Jets. Gase’s .281 winning percentage is good for third-worst all-time among Jets head coaches. Only Rich Kotite (.125 percent) and Lou Holtz (.231 percent) had worse winning percentages than Gase.

The Gase era in New York was bad from the beginning. In Gase’s first season as the head man in 2019, the Jets got off to a 0-4 start. Sam Darnold missing three games with mononucleosis played a big part in that. However, after winning in Darnold’s return, the Jets then lost their next three games and fell to 1-7. At that point, year one for Gase looked to be like a complete dud.

The Jets rallied for the final eight games, though, winning six of their last eight thanks in large part to Gregg Williams’ defense. Gase managed to salvage some of his first season with that stretch, but he still finished his first season as Jets head coach with a 7-9 record.

Nothing went right for Gase in year two. The Jets were the worst team in the NFL for 14 weeks until they finally captured a win in Week 15 over the Rams. Gase was able to win two of his last three games, but it was too little, too late. The Jets finished 2-14.

Report: Joe Douglas taking point on Jets’ head-coaching search

The responsibility of finding the Jets’ next head coach will fall on Joe Douglas’ shoulders, according to The Athletic’s Connor Hughes.

It’s on Joe Douglas to find the right successor for Adam Gase.

According to The Athletic’s Connor Hughes, Douglas will take point on New York’s search for a new head coach after firing Gase on Sunday night. Gase posted a 9-23 record in two years with the Jets, including a disastrous 2020 season that featured an 0-13 start. Gase, who came to New York with the reputation as an offensive guru, also oversaw the NFL’s worst-ranked offense the last two years and failed to make any sort of positive impact on Sam Darnold’s development.

Jets CEO Christopher Johnson and president Hymie Elhai will contribute to the organization’s search, per Hughes. However, it will be Douglas spearheading the search, identifying targets and conducting most, if not all, of the interviews with prospective candidates.

Among potential suitors for the vacancy are Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, Ravens DC Don “Wink” Martindale, Titans OC Arthur Smith and Rams DC Brandon Staley, per NFL Network. Iowa State’s Matt Campbell and Florida’s Dan Mullen were also mentioned as candidates from the college ranks that could receive consideration.

Douglas’ first head-coaching search as a general manager is expected to be a long and thorough one. Unlike the collaborative process between Johnson and Mike Maccagnan that landed Gase in the Big Apple, it looks like New York’s general manager will have the autonomy to decide who the Jets’ next head coach will be without much meddling from franchise brass.

5 traits the Jets must look for in Adam Gase’s replacement

The Jets need to find a new head coach who can develop talent, build a competent staff and work well with the front office.

The Jets have an important offseason on their hands, and it will start with finding their next head coach after the team fired Adam Gase.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero said the Jets will conduct a “lengthy and thorough search” for a new head coach that could include Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, Ravens defensive coordinator Don Martindale and Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, among others.

Whomever the Jets tab as their next coach will play a crucial role in the construction of the team Joe Douglas spent the past 19 months building, as well as grooming the players the Jets draft in April – especially if they take a quarterback with the No. 2 pick. They’ll need to make sure the person they hire can finally vault the franchise into the postseason, something the Jets haven’t tasted since 2010.

Here are five traits the Jets need to look for in their next head coach.

The New York Jets have fired Adam Gase after two seasons

Adam Gase is gone. The New York Jets have fired their head coach and will conduct a search for someone to lead them out of the depths of despair.

Gase was 23-25 as coach of the Miami Dolphins. In two seasons with the New York Jets, he was 9-23.

The team was 0-13 in 2020 before winning two games.

It lost to the New England Patriots on Sunday in Foxboro to conclude a sorry run for Gase as head coach of Gang Green.
