FSU Board of Trustees likely to discuss bolting from the ACC on Friday

Well this makes things interesting.

It appears that the next domino in conference realignment is about to fall. The Florida State University Board of Trustees has called a virtual meeting for Friday at 10 a.m. ET.

The expectation is that the BOT will approve a legal filing in their bid to leave the ACC. It is public knowledge that leadership at the university has been very unhappy with the conference. Given how much revenue FSU generates, they believe they deserve a bigger piece of the pie. They aren’t the only ones as Clemson is another team unhappy with the ACC.

The exit from the ACC will be a costly one. In August, the Associated Press reported that the fee is roughly three times the annual revenue which equates to about $120 million. In the 2021-22 year, the conference paid out roughly $39 million per school.

Florida State President Rick McCullough called for action unless there is “radical change to revenue distribution.”

“We are not satisfied with our current situation,” the FSU president said. “We love the ACC and our partners at ESPN. Our goal would be to stay in the ACC, but staying in the ACC under the current situation is hard for us to figure out how to remain competitive unless there were a major change in the revenue distribution. That has not happened.”

When the Seminoles were left out of the College Football Playoff, this felt like the most likely solution in their minds. That was just another log thrown on the “let’s get out of the ACC” fire.

The ACC is set to welcome California, SMU, and Stanford to the conference in time for the 2024 season. Should FSU make a move from the ACC, we will likely see more action from Clemson, Miami, and North Carolina.

College football’s top performers in the ACC during Week 2

Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke powered the Hurricanes to a ranked victory with five passing touchdowns to highlight Week 2 in the ACC.

The Atlantic Coast Conference offered a litany of interesting questions after some Week 1 statement victories. Are the Florida State Seminoles serious playoff contenders? Is Duke for real? What’s wrong with Clemson?

Well, all three of those teams responded to those whispers with blowout victories, the smallest margin of which was 35 points. North Carolina held off Appalachian State in overtime in a shootout with 74 combined points.

None of those romps were the most impressive game in the conference, however, as the Miami Hurricanes knocked off then-No. 23 Texas A&M 48-33 to toss their hat in the ring.

Here are the conference’s top stars from Week 2.

Preseason top 25 players in the ACC

These 25 players will likely decide the outcome of who represents the ACC in the postseason.

We recently unveiled our All-ACC preseason selections and now it is time to look at the best players of the conference in our top 25 rankings.

Most of the selections are based on production from last season and some will have to factor in projections for the upcoming season. Players such as Cade Klubnik, who goes in 2023 as the starting quarterback with a whole new offensive scheme. Garrett Riley comes over from TCU to give this offense a shot in the arm after underperforming in 2022.

It won’t only be the offensive players that we feature as Jared Verse of Florida State and Jeremiah Trotter Jr of Clemson are expected to be major forces once again.

College Sports Wire breaks down the top 25 players, a list we will be sure to revisit following the season to see where we got it right and where we got it wrong.

A look at the College Wire’s preseason All-ACC team

Breaking down the College Wire’s All-ACC preseason team.

The countdown to the 2023 college football season is on. We are less than a month away from the start of a new campaign.

In the ACC there are plenty of storylines to follow including the return of Jeff Brohm to his alma mater as well as a new young gun calling the shots for the Clemson offense. Can Garrett Riley help get Clemson back to the College Football Playoff?

The surprise team of the 2022 season was the Florida State Seminoles, who won 10 games for the first time since Jimbo Fisher led them to the Orange Bowl in 2016. As expected, the Noles should have plenty of players are our preseason All-ACC team.

But we begin in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where a young gun is looking to take the Heisman away from the defending trophy winner.

Ranking the best ACC wide receivers ahead of the season

Florida State, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest duos headline our top wide receivers in the ACC.

There is no shortage of talent in the Atlantic Coastal Conference. The quarterbacks are led by North Carolina’s Drake Maye and Florida State’s Jordan Travis. They have a pair of studs at running back with Clemson’s Will Shipley and Florida State’s Trey Benson. Can the Seminoles go three-for-three with a top-tier wide receiver?

Before we dive into our preliminary rankings for the wide receivers, there are several teams that have formidable duos ready to take the field. Florida State, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest each have two wide receivers among the best in the ACC. Virginia Tech had to go out and address the wide receiver position after a poor showing in 2022.

With that said, we dive into the best pass catchers at wideout in the ACC.

Post spring ACC quarterback rankings for 2023

Where each ACC quarterback lands in our post-spring rankings.

Much like the rest of the college football landscape, we saw a lot of movement in the ACC. It was especially true at the quarterback position.

Two of the top gunslingers, Sam Hartman and Devin Leary, exited the conference for new opportunities. Hartman is now with Notre Dame and Leary takes over for the departing Will Levis at Kentucky.

As far as 2023 is concerned, the top guys are back with North Carolina’s Drake Maye and Florida State’s Jordan Travis. The two combined to lead their teams to 19 wins. The duo could face off in 2023 in the ACC championship game. Clemson and Cade Klubnik could have something to say about it.

With that being said, College Sports Wire ranks each starting quarterback ahead of the 2023 season. The starters are based on our projected depth charts.

Kyle Filipowski announces decision on his future

Filipowski makes a decision on NBA draft or returning to Duke for the 2023-24 season.

Duke Blue Devils big man Kyle Filipowksi was among the players in the 2023 NBA draft class that had yet to announce his intentions. Would he be another one-and-done prospect at Duke or would he return to Cameron Indoor Stadium?

On Tuesday, the 7-footer made his intentions known through his social media channels, particularly on Twitter. The consensus five-star recruit from New York announced that he would be returning to Duke for the 2023-24 college basketball season.

Filipowski appeared in 36 games this past season with an average of 15.1 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game. His best performance of the season came against the Pitt Panthers on Jan. 11. Filipowski scored 28 points while snagging 15 rebounds, four of which came on the offensive side.

Respect his decision to return to the hardwood among the Cameron crazies this next season.

Filipowski will join Tyrese Proctor, who announced he would return to Duke back on Mar. 27. This gives second-year head coach Jon Scheyer a boost to his team as they look to make another run at an NCAA Championship next season. The latest odds have Duke with the second best chance to win it all behind the defending champions, UConn.

MADNESS: Twitter reacts to No. 13 Furman shocks No. 4 Virginia with late three-pointer

No. 13 Furman shocked No. 4 Virginia and the world on Thursday afternoon by defeating the Cavaliers on a steal and three-pointer in the final seconds of the second half.

The No. 13 Furman Paladins started off the 2023 NCAA Tournament with a bang on Thursday afternoon upsetting the No. 4 Virginia Cavaliers 68-67.

The Paladins pulled off the upset on a three-pointer in the final seconds of the second half, as Virginia’s Kihei Clark looked to push the ball up the court trying to stop Furman from getting to the ball or from fouling him.

His heave to half-court, however, would be intercepted by Furman’s Garret Hien who would get the ball quickly to JP Pegues who would knock down the game-winning three with just over two seconds remaining. It was Pegues’s only made three-pointer of the afternoon, missing each of his other three attempts while being 3-for-9 from the floor for the game.

The three-pointer for Pegues also helped cap off a 12-point comeback in the final 12 minutes by the Paladins.

For Virginia, the crucial turnover by Kihei Clark puts an end to his collegiate career. A career that is ironically headlined by a terrific pass he made as a true freshman in Virginia’s 2019 NCAA title.

In the dying seconds of Virginia’s Elite Eight matchup that season against Purdue, Clark would round up a loose ball on the other side of half-court before throwing a bullet of a one-handed pass to Mamadi Diakite who would tie the game at 70-70 and send the game to overtime. They would go on to beat Purdue 80-75, before defeating Auburn 63-62 in the Final Four and eventually defeating Texas Tech 85-77 in the national championship game.

With the victory, Furman now awaits the winner of No. 5 San Diego State vs No. 12 Charleston.

10 teams that could make moves in college expansion

These 10 teams could be the top candidates for more expansion/realignment in college athletics.

Who doesn’t love the idea of college expansion?

In 2023 and 2024, the collegiate game will look different. After the moves of the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns to the SEC, the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins to the Big Ten in 2024.

The Big 12 countered with the additions of the BYU Cougars, Central Florida Knights, Cincinnati Bearcats, and Houston Cougars for the 2023 season. We are still waiting to see what moves the Pac-12 will make.

The conference was raided of both Los Angeles-area schools and at one point it seemed like the Oregon Ducks and Washington Huskies could be next. The SEC and Big Ten will be at 16 teams each by the time 2024 kicks off with ACC at 14, Big 12 at 12, and the Pac-12 at 10.

We look at 10 schools that could be on the move next if expansion and realignment continue.
