Penn State drops double overtime thriller at Clemson

Three players scoring at least 20 points wasn’t enough to help Penn State at Clemson in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Penn State trailed Clemson by seven points in the final minute of regulation on Tuesday night but came through with a wild rally with Andrew Funk’s three-pointer forcing overtime, but the Nittany Lions came up short in a competitive double overtime game in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Penn State lost its first true road game of the season, 101-94.

Three Penn State players scored at least 20 points in the high-scoring game. [autotag]Camren Wynter[/autotag] led Penn State with 26 points scored. [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] had 23 points with eight assists and seven rebounds. And [autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] ended the game with 23 points. It is the first time since 2006 that three players scored at least 20 points in the same game. Lundy also had a double-double with 12 rebounds.

Penn State’s three-point shooting struggled against the Tigers for much of the night, with Penn State hitting on just 11 of 36 three-point attempts. Lundy hit on four of his eight attempts, and Wynter connected on three of six.

Penn State led the Tigers by six points at halftime but Clemson didn’t take long to take a lead in the second half. Penn State is now 11-11 all-time in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. It was announced this week this will be the final season for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, which means Penn State broke even in the conference-vs-conference challenge.

Penn State is now 6-2 this season, and 0-1 in true road games (2-2 away from home). As a program, Penn State is 0-5 against Clemson in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Penn State will begin Big Ten competition with its next game. The Nittany Lions will host Michigan State next Wednesday, December 7.

The Big Ten and ACC split all six games on the schedule on Tuesday night with Illinois, Maryland, and Iowa scoring wins for the Big Ten and Michigan and Wisconsin losing close games at home. The ACC leads the Big Ten 5-3 going into Wednesday’s final games of this year’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Penn State at Clemson men’s basketball: TV and live stream info for ACC-Big Ten Challenge

How to watch Tuesday night’s Penn State men’s basketball game at Clemson in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

For the first time this season, Penn State men’s basketball will be dealt with a true road challenge. How fitting that it will come in this year’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge against a team it has never beaten in the conference-vs-conference series. Penn State visits Clemson on Tuesday night, the second night of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Nittany Lions and Tigers come into the matchup about as even as you can be as far as the stats can suggest.

While Penn State owns an all-time winning record in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, it is just 0-4 in the four meetings it has played against Clemson in the challenge. If head coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] is going to buck that trend, his program will certainly have to earn it. Clemson is a good team with guard Chase Hunter capable of giving Penn State’s defense some problems.

Clemson’s two losses this season have come against South Carolina and another Big Ten team, Iowa. The loss to South Carolina may be of some note for Penn State as the Gamecocks recently went 0-3 in the Charleston Classic, where Penn State missed them entirely while finishing in third place in the weekend tournament recently. South Carolina lost to two teams beaten by Penn State, Colorado State and Furman. If the transitive property works in college basketball, that should bode well for the Nittany Lions.

Unfortunately, the transitive property really only works in math and not on the court. So Penn State will have to go out and earn a win with their game.

Here is how to catch this non-conference matchup live.

As Big Ten leaves ESPN, the end of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge is official

The writing was on the wall for the future of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge all along.

Call it a coincidence or simply call it a business decision, but this will be the final year for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in basketball. It’s the end of an era in college basketball, but we probably should have seen this one coming.

On Monday, ESPN announced this season will be the final year for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge that has been a staple of the college basketball schedule for both conferences since its first season in 1999. In its place, starting next year, ESPN will introduce the ACC/SEC Challenge. ESPN is also bringing a close to a similar series with the final SEC/Big 12 Challenge being played in January.

The Big Ten is leaving ESPN entirely in its next media rights package, which begins next season. Big Ten games will be carried across a shared media rights package arrangement including CBS, FOX, and NBC in addition to the Big Ten Network. So it may have been an obvious expectation that ESPN and the Big Ten would go their separate ways with any made-for-TV scheduling arrangements for the foreseeable future. With ESPN having a stake in the ACC and SEC with the ACC Network and SEC Network, and no longer having a vested interest in the Big Ten, the writing was on the wall as soon as the new Big Ten media rights package was confirmed.

It would make sense for the Big Ten to start up a similar scheduling arrangement with another conference, although finding a suitable partner that can help boost the product overall may become slightly more difficult as the next wave of realignment changes happens. The Big Ten is adding USC and UCLA in 2024, and the Big 12 is losing Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC in a few years as well.

Big Ten schools can still arrange their own scheduling agreements with members of the ACC or SEC, of course. But not having a network-sponsored scheduling arrangement already set in place could be a void to the basketball product.

ESPN’s results without the Big Ten will be interesting to see as the numbers between an ACC/Big Ten Challenge and ACC/SEC Challenge will certainly be compared and contrasted against one another. The reach of an ACC/SEC Challenge could overlap more than the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, but time will tell how this all plays out for all parties involved.

So cherish every game in this year’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge for what it is, as it will b your last taste of this fun annual series of games.

Penn State’s all-time results in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge

What is Penn State’s all-time record in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge?

Penn State may not be known as a basketball school, but the Nittany Lions are one of the few Big Ten teams to own an all-time winning record in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Penn State has even scored a few upsets along the way to help the Big Ten claim victory over their counterparts from the ACC.

Every season since 1999, the ACC and Big Ten have arranged a full conference vs. conference scheduling agreement in basketball, and it has been among the highlights of the sport’s nonconference schedule. Conference bragging rights have gone back and forth with a good run by the ACC and more recent success experienced by the Big Ten.

It hasn’t always been pretty for Penn State basketball, of course. But here is a look at every game Penn State has played in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, which comes to a close in 2022, at least for now.

ACC/Big Ten Challenge: Full 2022 schedule and TV info

ACC/Big Ten Challenge: Full 2022 schedule with start times and TV info for all 14 games

Monday night is the start of this year’s edition of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge on the basketball court. The 14 members of the Big Ten will take on 14 members of the ACC in one of the original conference-vs-conference basketball scheduling agreements. The Big Ten is looking for a fourth consecutive victory in the series after winning the past three seasons. And with a series tie in 2018, it has been four straight years without losing to the ACC in this long-running series.

The ACC does hold the historical edge in the challenge, however. The ACC owns a 12-8-3 all-time series lead against the Big Ten. The ACC’s overall lead has been led by Duke’s 19-4 record all-time in the series, the most wins of any school in either conference and easily the best winning percentage. As far as winning percentage goes, nine teams in the ACC own a .500 win percentage or higher compared to just five Big Ten members being .500 or better in the series. Perhaps surprisingly, Penn State owns the Big Ten’s second-best all-time win percentage with .524% trailing only Purdue’s .571.

Maryland’s record in the all-time series is fun to make note of. As an ACC member, Maryland was 10-5 al-time in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, but the Terrapins have slumped to 1-7 in the series since switching sides as a Big Ten member.

NC State will not participate in this year’s ACC-Big Ten Challenge due to the ACC having an uneven membership compared to the Big Ten (15 basketball members to 14 with the ACC’s inclusion of Notre Dame).

Here is the full 2022 ACC-Big Ten Challenge schedule along with start times and TV information.

Penn State women’s basketball matchup set for ACC/Big Ten Challenge

Penn State women’s basketball has its matchup for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge confirmed.

The pieces are starting to come together for the Penn State women’s basketball schedule for the upcoming season. On Monday, the Big Ten revealed the pairings for this year’s ACC/Big Ten Women’s Basketball Challenge. Penn State will play host to Virginia in this year’s women’s basketball challenge.

Penn State will host Virginia on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at the Bryce Jordan Center. An exact tip time will be confirmed later but the game will air on either the Big Ten Network, B1G+, or one of ESPN’s networks.

This will mark the first meeting between the two schools in women’s basketball since March 12, 1996, a first-round NCAA tournament victory by the No. 8 seed Lady Lions in Louisiana. This year’s matchup in the ACC/Big Ten Women’s Basketball Challenge will be the eighth all-time meeting between Penn State and Virginia in women’s basketball.

Here is the full slate of games to be played in this year’s ACC/Big Ten Women’s Basketball Challenge…

This is the first non-conference game confirmed for the Lady Lions. Penn State will host Indiana, Northwestern, Ohio State, and Wisconsin in Big Ten play this season and they will visit Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, and Nebraska. Penn State will play home-and-home series with Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, Purdue, and Rutgers. The Big Ten schedule will be announced at a later time.

The Lady Lions are coming off an 11-18 season under head coach Carolyn Kieger. Kieger is entering her fourth season at the helm of the program for the 2022-23 season.

Ohio State at North Carolina odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Ohio State Buckeyes at North Carolina Tar Heels college basketball matchup, with NCAA basketball betting odds, picks and best bets

The Ohio State Buckeyes (7-0) will tussle with the North Carolina Tar Heels (6-1) at the Dean E. Smith Center at 9:30 p.m. ET Wednesday in a battle between top 10 squads in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. We analyze the Ohio State-North Carolina odds and betting lines, while providing college basketball betting tips and advice on this matchup.

The Buckeyes are ranked sixth in the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll. The Tar Heels are No. 7.

Ohio State at North Carolina: Three things you need to know

1. Ohio State F Kaleb Wesson has been a one-man wrecking crew for the Buckeyes, leading the team in points (12.7), rebounds (9.3) and blocked shots (1.7).

2. The Buckeyes football team is known for its stingy defense, but the basketball team is making headlines in the category, too. The hoopsters are No. 2 overall in scoring defense (52.7 points), while also checking in second in field-goal percentage defense (32.7 percent).

3. North Carolina has won 12 of 14 all-time meetings in this series, including an 86-72 win in the Dean Dome back in 2017.

Prediction

North Carolina 76, Ohio State 69

Moneyline (ML)

NORTH CAROLINA (-189) will cost you more than against the spread, but it could be a tight game and the extra insurance might be worth it. Ohio State (+155) is battle-tested, having scored impressive wins over Cincinnati and Villanova, but a win in Chapel Hill is a pretty tall order.

Against the Spread (ATS)

NORTH CAROLINA (-3.5, -110) won’t blow the doors off Ohio State (+3.5, -110) as the Buckeyes won’t be intimidated by the environment. But UNC will be the most complete team OSU faces to date. Freshman F Armando Bacot is a handful, posting double-doubles in four of his first five games, and he’ll give Ohio State fits.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on UNC to win by at least four points returns a profit of $9.09.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 135.5 (-161) is the play, as this one should sneak into the lower 140’s with a series of late fouls and free throws, helping to inch the game over the line. The Over is 4-1 in the past five meetings in this series, too.
