Could he be on the comeback trail?

As NFL free agency continues along, the Cleveland Browns have worked out defensive end Aaron Lynch, who has not played football since 2020.

While the Browns have a set defensive line rotation after the first week of free agency, re-signing Za’Darius Smith and defensive tackles Shelby Harris and Maurice Hurst, and also adding Quinton Jefferson, they may take a low-stakes flyer here as well.

Playing for the San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, and Jacksonville Jaguars over the first seven years of his NFL career, Lynch has totaled a career tally of 21 sacks and 37 tackles for loss.

Lynch announced his retirement from the NFL in August of 2020 but returned to the Jaguars in October of the same year. Playing eight games for the Jags in 2020, racking up one sack on the season. Lynch is still just 31 years old even if he has been out of football for three years.

If the Browns do sign him, expect Lynch to be a 90-man roster player who will be considered a long shot to make the final 53-man roster.

Notre Dame football has attracted some of the biggest names over the years but many of those big names even pale in comparison to others.

With the help of 247Sports, Rivals, ESPN and the thoughts of others, we’ve compiled Notre Dame football’s Mount Rushmore of all-time recruits.

The selections weren’t based on who actually went on to have the greatest careers at Notre Dame, but those who came in with the absolute most hype.

Some met that hype. Some exceeded it. Others came up well short.

Jags release their list of Week 9 inactives vs. Texans

After being ruled OUT, Gardner Minshew was the most notable player on Week 9’s inactives list for the Jags as Jake Luton will start vs. HOU.

The Jacksonville Jaguars released their list of inactives for Week 9’s game against the Houston Texans, which consisted of seven players. Of course, the most notable was quarterback Gardner Minshew II (thumb), but there were others who surfaced on the list for injury reasons like tailback Devine Ozigbo and linebacker Dakota Allen.

Like Minshew, Allen (ankle) and Ozigbo (hamstring) were ruled out Friday on the final injury report. Both players sustained (or re-aggravated) their respective injuries Week 7 against the Los Angeles Chargers and exited the game early without returning.

One of the more interesting tidbits about Week 9’s list of inactives is that cornerbacks Luq Barcoo and Josiah Scott both surfaced on it again. The Jags elected to call up cornerback Josh Nurse from the practice squad instead of making either rookie active, which is puzzling after the solid training camp performances they had.

The last notable to surface on the inactives list was Aaron Lynch, who came out of retirement two weeks ago. With that being the case, it isn’t shocking that the veteran hasn’t been activated yet as the Jags are likely looking to get him in game day shape.

DE/LB Aaron Lynch rejoins the Jags after coming out of retirement

The Jags got an unexpected surprise from veteran DE Aaron Lynch who came out of retirement to play football again on Wednesday.

After retiring in August, it appears former Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Aaron Lynch has had a change of heart. The team announced that the veteran will be rejoining them off their reserve/retired list Wednesday, which also required a roster exemption.

Lynch, 27, was signed by the Jags on May 5. His signing was likely due to a connection to Jags director of player personnel, Trent Baalke, who was behind drafting Lynch in the 2014 NFL Draft in the fifth-round. After his time in San Francisco, Lynch joined the Chicago Bears and spent two seasons with the team (2018-19).

While it’s unknown if he’ll actually see the field with the Jags, they certainly could use a veteran’s presence on the edge where they have two young players in K’Lavon Chaisson and Josh Allen. Of course, he’s going to have to get in football shape first, so it may take a while before he’s activated if the Jags hold on to him.

Lynch will return to the Jags’ roster with 105 career tackles and 20 sacks to his name. Throughout his six years in the league, he’s made 73 total career appearances and 22 starts. His most productive seasons, however, were with Baalke and the 49ers where he accumulated 19 starts, 83 tackles, and 15 sacks.

Jags DL depth continues to thin out with Aaron Lynch set to retire

The Jags are taking yet another loss on their defensive line as Aaron Lynch will be retiring.

The hits just keep coming for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ defensive line as they will be losing another player to retirement. This time, it’s veteran Aaron Lynch who will be voluntarily stepping away from the game after signing with the Jags this offseason.

Lynch, 27, signed with the Jags in early May to give them depth at the defensive end position after previously playing for the Chicago Bears. His connection with the team came through front office member Trent Baalke, who drafted him into the league (pick No. 150 overall) with the San Francisco 49ers in 2014.

Lynch, who would’ve been entering his seventh season, will exit the NFL with 105 total tackles and 20 sacks. As mentioned by Adam Schefter above, he’ll be placed on the Jags’ Reserve/Retired list tomorrow, leaving another roster spot available.

Lynch’s retirement is one that could hurt the team in terms of making their defensive line depth thinner than it was. Just this week they lost Rodney Gunter, who retired due to a heart disorder. Before that, they lost defensive end Lerentee McCray and nose tackle Al Woods, who elected to sit the season out due to concerns for the coronavirus. They also lost Brian Price and Dontavius Russell earlier this month.

Another noteworthy nugget worth mentioning is that K’Lavon Chaisson is also currently practicing on the side with a hamstring injury. Thankfully, coach Doug Marrone said he’s progressing well and could be back soon.

Jaguars sign veteran pass rusher Aaron Lynch

The Jags fills out their 90-man roster with another pass rusher in veteran Aaron Lynch who brings a great deal of experience to the team.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed veteran pass rusher Aaron Lynch the team announced Tuesday.

The transaction came after one roster slot was available due to waiving both running back Jeremy McNichols and defensive end Chuck Harris Monday. McNichols’ spot was filled by veteran running back Chris Thompson, giving the Jags 89 players and the addition of Lynch now puts them at the max for an offseason roster.

Lynch was a 2014 fifth-round selection of Jags director of player personnel, Trent Baalke, during his time in San Francisco with the 49ers. Since, Lynch also played for the Chicago Bears (2018-19).

The addition further validates the Jaguars pending move to more 3-4 looks, something coach Doug Marrone and general manager Dave Caldwell talked about during the draft as the 49ers and Bears were 3-4 teams with Lynch. He’ll now join a young group that consists of Pro Bowler Josh Allen, first-round selection K’Lavon Chaisson and Yannick Ngakoue, who hasn’t signed his franchise tag and may not play in 2020.

Lynch will enter the 2020 season with 105 tackles and 20 sacks. He’s made 73 total career appearances and 22 starts. His most productive years, however, were with the 49ers where he registered 19 starts, 83 tackles and 15 sacks.

Former Notre Dame Five-Star Recruit Signs with Jacksonville Jaguars

Remember Aaron Lynch’s brief Notre Dame career? The former prized recruit and impact freshman just signed a new deal with the NFL’s Jaguars

Quick – do you remember Aaron Lynch’s career at Notre Dame?  If you blinked you very possibly may have missed it because he transfered to South Florida after just one season where there were certainly flashes of brilliance for the former five-star recruit.

Lynch played in 12 games his one season at Notre Dame in 2011, recording a team-high 5.5 sacks and 14 quarterback hurries.  It’s almost scary to think about what might have been had he been on the 2012 defensive line with as great as that group was.

The former top-ten national recruit went on to play at South Florida in 2013 after having to sit out 2012 due to transferring.  He then declared for the 2014 NFL Draft where the San Francisco 49ers eventually took him with the 150th overall pick.

Fast-forward six years down the road and Aaron Lynch has signed a new deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars after spending the last two years with the Chicago Bears.

Terms of Lynch’s deal in Jacksonville were not yet announced.  Lynch has recorded 20 sacks in his 73 game NFL career to date and for the second time in his football career now finds himself leaving the mid-west to play for a Florida based football team.

4 pending free agents the Bears should let walk in 2020

There are some players that the Bears should let walk this offseason, whether that’s due to injury concerns or monetary reasons.

The offseason is in full swing, and we’re just a couple months away from the start of the new league year and free agency. And the Bears have some important decisions to make when it comes to in-house free agents.

It’s impossible for the Bears to keep everyone — especially considering their salary cap situation, where they currently have just over $7 million in available cap space, according to Over The Cap.

But there are some players that the Bears should let walk this offseason, whether that’s due to injury concerns or monetary reasons.

Here are four free agents that the Bears shouldn’t re-sign this offseason:

1. ILB Danny Trevathan

Danny Trevathan has been a staple of this Bears defense in the last four years, but with three inside linebackers due up for contract extensions in Chicago, Trevathan is likely the odd man out. Trevathan was playing some of his best football with the Bears before he suffered a gruesome elbow injury that essentially ended his season. Injuries have been Trevathan’s downfall, as he’s missed 16 games since joining the Bears prior to the 2015 season, including the final seven weeks of 2019.

If not for Nick Kwiatkoski’s impressive performance in Trevathan’s absence, I’d be advocating for the Bears to re-sign Trevathan. But when it comes down to it, Kwiatkoski is the younger, healthier and cheaper option to pair with Roquan Smith in 2020.

In a somewhat surprising move, the Rams parted ways with Wade Phillips as their defensive coordinator. Sean McVay replaced him with 37-year-old Brandon Staley, who has been an outside linebackers coach under Vic Fangio for the last three years; two in Chicago and one year in Denver.

Staley has only been an NFL coach since 2017, so his connections to players don’t exactly run deep. However, these four players are set to hit free agency in March and have played for Staley in the past.

Lynch spent one year with Staley as his coach in 2018 with the Bears, playing 13 games with three starts. He recorded three sacks, eight QB hits, one interception and 16 total tackles that year, which are admittedly not overly impressive numbers.

Lynch isn’t a prolific pass rusher, but rather a better run defender at 6-5, 285 pounds. He fits best on the strong side as a left outside linebacker, which is where Clay Matthews currently resides.

No one is saying Lynch would solve the Rams’ issues at outside linebacker, but he wouldn’t be a bad depth piece as he could probably play defensive end in sub-packages, too.
