Analysis: A.J. Bouye signing gives Panthers more freedom in first round

That gives coach Matt Rhule and GM Scott Fitterer more flexibility.

The Carolina Panthers are slowly but surely filling out their roster for the year. Last night the team announced that they have agreed to terms with veteran cornerback A.J. Bouye.

Bouye will turn 30 years old before next season begins and his career probably peaked in 2017 when he made the Pro Bowl with the Jaguars. He’ll also miss the first two games of the year due to a PED suspension. As long as they were in the market for an older corner we would have much preferred Richard Sherman for that role. Still, Bouye is likely far cheaper than acquiring Sherman would have been and the Panthers did fill what was arguably their biggest hole on defense.

There are other reasons to like this move, as well. For one thing, it gives them more freedom in regards to which direction they can go with the No. 8 overall pick in the 201 NFL draft.

In the last week they’ve traded for a new starting quarterback in Sam Darnold and brought in Bouye, addressing at least two critical positions that might have required a first-round pick to get a solution at. A quarterback shouldn’t be off the table, but the Darnold trade makes it far less likely they’ll use their first-round pick on that spot. Bouye all but guarantees they won’t draft a corner until the later rounds.

That gives coach Matt Rhule and GM Scott Fitterer more flexibility.

In our opinion, the pick should go to whoever the best left tackle available is. Hopefully it will be Oregon’s Penei Sewell, the top prospect in this class and a good candidate to drop to No. 8 as a result of the projected QB-frenzy in the top five. It might also be Northwestern’s Rashawn Slater, who doesn’t have the size of an NFL tackle but has the technique to thrive.

Going best player available is always a popular path though, especially in the first round of the draft.

Even with a massive problem at left tackle and questions at free safety and defensive tackle, Carolina might decide that’s the route to go to maximize their value.

NFL Draft: Panthers deal with A.J. Bouye improves Eagles chances of landing a top CB prospect

NFL Draft: Panthers deal with A.J. Bouye improves Eagles chances of landing top a CB

Depending on whom you ask, the Dallas Cowboys are either enamored with Kyle Pitts or set to draft an edge rusher out of Michigan.

A day after the Carolina Panthers traded for quarterback Sam Darnold, the rebuilding franchise signed veteran cornerback A.J. Bouye to a deal.

Both moves likely eliminated the Panthers from choosing a quarterback or cornerback at No. 8 overall, likely improving Philadelphia’s chances of getting either Jaycee Horn or Patrick Surtain.

The four quarterbacks are expected to be Trevor Lawrence (Jaguars), Zach Wilson (Jets), Justin Fields or Mack Jones (49ers), and Trey Lance.

If Mack Jones is able to bust up the party, that’ll make five.

The Bengals will take Ja’Marr Chase or Penei Sewell, while Atlanta could still go quarterback or Kyle Pitts depending on what San Francisco does, potentially eliminating seven players off the board.

That leaves Miami, Detroit, Dallas, and the Giants likely all going skill positions as well, unless the Cowboys go edger usher or something else.

Philadelphia is now in a fight to get the best players from a group that includes Surtain II or Horn.

Panthers agree to terms with veteran cornerback A.J. Bouye

Panthers agree to terms with veteran cornerback A.J. Bouye.

The Carolina Panthers finally added another veteran to their cornerback rotation, agreeing to terms with A.J. Bouye, per the team website.

Bouye went undrafted after playing his college football at Central Florida, but he’s gone on to have a respectable NFL career. So far he’s appeared in 100 regular season games (69 starts) split between the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Denver Broncos. Bouye has posted 14 interceptions and 72 pass breakups. He was a Pro Bowler for Jacksonville’s star-studded defense in 2017.

As for his most recent work, Bouye spent the 2020 season in Denver. In seven games, he allowed two touchdowns, 273 yards and a 108.4 passer rating in coverage.

Bouye projects as the team’s starting cornerback outside opposite Donte Jackson.

Report: Bengals to host free-agent CB A.J. Bouye on visit

The Cincinnati Bengals will host free-agent CB A.J. Bouye on a visit.

The gears are starting to turn at Paul Brown Stadium for the Cincinnati Bengals as they dive into free agency.

According to Mike Klis of 9News in Denver, the Bengals will host veteran cornerback A.J. Bouye on a free-agent visit.

Bouye, 29, was a cap cut in Denver in February, saving the Broncos $13 million. He struggled at times last year, finishing with a 55.6 PFF grade. He was one of the most sought-after names a little while back when landing in Jacksonville back in 2017.

This sort of news would seem to hint the Bengals might be letting William Jackson test the open market, where they might be out-priced in a bidding war. A different new report said Jackson is positioned to be one of the market’s highest-paid players.

That said, the Bengals need plenty of quality depth too as Mackensie Alexander and LeShaun Sims get ready to test the open market, too.

9 free agent CBs the Colts should consider in 2021

Plenty of CBs for the Colts in free agency.

The cornerback position is one that the Indianapolis Colts will have to address this offseason, and they could look to do so in a similar fashion through free agency in 2021.

With Xavier Rhodes and T.J. Carrie set to hit the market, the Colts currently have a group comprised of Kenny Moore II, Rock Ya-Sin, Marvell Tell and Isaiah Rodgers. There’s promise but even more question marks.

The Colts could look to bring in a veteran on a short deal like they did with Rhodes. It’s likely they are looking at aged veterans or reclamation projects who still have upside. Finding an elite cornerback on the market just isn’t something that happens, but there are intriguing options likely to be available.

Here are nine cornerbacks the Colts should consider in free agency:

Should Bengals call recently released CB A.J. Bouye?

Could the Cincinnati Bengals go after a new free agent?

Could the Cincinnati Bengals get free agency started early with cornerback A.J. Bouye?

The Denver Broncos just cut Bouye loose, doing him something of a solid by cuttig him now and letting him be the only starter-level corner on the market before free agency opens in March.

Bouye’s case is an interesting one, though. Denver cut him to save roughly $13 million in cap space after he played in just seven games last year while dealing with injuries, all before getting hit with a six-game suspension. He’ll serve the last two games of his ban at the start of next season.

Meaning, Bouye might have to settle for something of a prove-it deal much cheaper than he normally would, especially if he wants to get ahead of the curve and find a spot before the market opens.

Bouye will turn 30 in August and has had a down few seasons. But in 2018, he was still playing at a high level and posted a 75.7 Pro Football Focus grade, so there’s still the allure of upside.

Cincinnati figures to have a need at corner no matter what happens with William Jackson, considering Trae Waynes has yet to even suit up and the depth is questionable at best. If Bouye has a soft market and has to settle for a cheap deal, it couldn’t hurt to make an early move — and it would eliminate the possibility the team takes yet another first-round corner.

Broncos release former Jags CB A.J. Bouye

Almost a year after being traded to the Broncos, former Jags CB A.J. Bouye was released Wednesday.

Former Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback A.J. Bouye was amongst the various key starters the team traded last offseason, but unfortunately he’ll be looking for his second team in two seasons. According to 9News reporter Mike Klis, the veteran was released by the Denver Broncos Wednesday and is now a free agent.

Bouye, 29, was sent to the Broncos by the Jags last March for a 2020 fourth-round pick as the team needed to free up some cap space. Now, the Broncos will be moving on from the veteran, too, for the same reason. Additionally, things simply didn’t go as planned in Denver as Bouye only played in seven games last season due to a shoulder injury, a concussion, and a six-game suspension for performance enhancing drugs. That suspension will bleed into the 2021 season for two games, too.

Bouye finished his career with the Broncos with 23 combined tackles and six pass breakups over seven starts. However, with him being only 29 years of age, there should be a respectable market for his services. As for the Broncos, they freed up $11.7 million against the salary cap by releasing Bouye.

Broncos lose CB A.J. Bouye to suspension ahead of matchup with Panthers

According to a report by Adam Scheftere at ESPN, Broncos cornerback A.J. Bouye has been suspended six games by the NFL.

The Panthers will host the Broncos this week in a matchup between 4-8 teams. While Denver doesn’t have much going on offensively, if you watched their Sunday night game against the Chiefs you know they have a very tough defensive unit. Carolina is catching a break, though.

According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, Broncos cornerback A.J. Bouye has been suspended six games by the NFL.

Bouye came to Denver via a trade with the Jaguars back in March. In 100 career games, Bouye has posted 14 interceptions, 72 passes defensed and 338 combined tackles.

While Bouye being out is good news for the Panthers offense, it won’t matter much if they don’t get their wide receivers back in time for Sunday’s game. Both D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel are currently on the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Broncos also still have a lot of playmakers on that side of the ball, including defensive tackle Shelby Harris and safety Justin Simmons, who leads his team with four interceptions this year.

Broncos place CB A.J. Bouye on injured reserve

Broncos cornerback A.J. Bouye can return from IR after three weeks.

Denver Broncos cornerback A.J. Bouye (shoulder) has been placed on injured reserve, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

Bouye dislocated his shoulder during a 16-14 loss to the Tennessee Titans on “Monday Night Football” in Week 1. He will be eligible to return from injured reserve after three weeks.

With Bouye sidelined, Bryce Callahan and Michael Ojemudia are expected to serve as the team’s two starting cornerbacks against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2. Essang Bassey will play in the slot.

To provide more depth at cornerback, Denver called up De’Vante Bausby from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. Bausby will join Davontae Harris and Duke Dawson as Denver’s backup CBs this week.

Before leaving Monday’s game, Bouye played well and broke up one pass. The Broncos traded a fourth-round draft pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for the 29-year-old CB earlier this year. Bouye is set to earn $26,937,500 through the 2021 season before hitting free agency in 2022.

Broncos confirm several roster moves

Broncos promoted cornerback De’Vante Bausby to the active roster.

The Denver Broncos announced several roster moves Wednesday.

After placing outside linebacker Von Miller on injured reserve, the Broncos have promoted cornerback De’Vante Bausby from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, the team confirmed.

Bausby will be filling Miller’s roster spot on the active roster after cornerback A.J. Bouye dislocated his shoulder. Bouye could be sidelined for several weeks so Denver needed to add more depth at cornerback.

To fill Bausby’s former spot on the practice squad, the Broncos signed outside linebacker Isaiah Irving, who played under coach Vic Fangio with the Chicago Bears. Irving will provide more depth as an edge defender while Miller is sidelined.

Denver also confirmed that outside linebacker Derrek Tuszka and safety P.J. Locke reverted back to the practice squad after being activated for Monday’s game. The Broncos will likely activate Tuszka or Irving this weekend to have a fourth outside linebacker against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2.
