Updating Green Bay Packers 90-man training camp roster for 2023

Updating 90-man roster for the Green Bay Packers during training camp of the 2023 season.

Between now and Aug. 29, the Green Bay Packers will need to determine the best 53 players from the offseason roster of 90.

Training camp for Matt LaFleur’s team begins with 90 players on Wednesday, July 26, the day of the first practice. By Tuesday, Aug. 29, Brian Gutekunst and the Packers need to have the roster trimmed to 53 and ready for the regular season.

Throughout the next few weeks, Packers Wire will track the 90-man roster, listing players, uniform numbers and changes made at each position group during training camp.

Note: Italics indicates a rookie. Player’s uniform number listed after name.

Packers training camp preview: Who are the newcomers to 90-man roster?

Highlighting all the newcomers coming to Green Bay Packers training camp in 2023.

The Green Bay Packers added 36 new players to the 90-man roster since the end of the 2022 season.

Who are all these newcomers coming to training camp? The Packers made 13 draft picks, signed or claimed seven veterans or first-year players, signed or claimed 15 undrafted free agents and was assigned one international player.

To help preview training camp, here’s a quick introduction to the newcomers to Green Bay this summer, listed by uniform number:

Separating Packers’ 90-man training camp roster into 4 different groups

Putting the Packers’ 90-man roster into four groups entering training camp: roster locks, likely to make roster, roster hopefuls and long shots..

The Green Bay Packers are bringing a 90-man roster to the start of training camp (first practice is Wednesday, July 26) next week.

The competition of camp and the preseason will help general manager Brian Gutekunst and coach Matt LaFleur determine a 53-man roster before facing the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field in Week 1.

To get a better grasp of where the Packers stand as of late July, let’s separate the roster into four groups: roster locks, likely to be on the roster, roster hopefuls, and long shots.

Colts’ 90-man offseason roster entering minicamp

Here’s a look at the Colts’ roster entering minicamp.

The Indianapolis Colts are set to begin mandatory minicamp Tuesday as they prepare to wrap up the offseason workout program.

This will be the final time the team is together before returning for training camp at the end of July, and there were some slight changes made to the roster from the beginning of June. The biggest addition came in the form of wide receiver Breshad Perriman.

Here’s a look at the Colts’ updated 90-man offseason roster, sorted by jersey number:

Taking a look at the Colts’ 90-man roster entering June.

The Indianapolis Colts are entering June, the final month of offseason activity before the team breaks for summer going training camp at the end of July.

Starting off the new month Thursday, the Colts made a slight change to the roster, signing veteran defensive end Genard Avery and waiving undrafted rookie free agent Darius Hagans.

Chiefs’ 90-man offseason roster by jersey number

Every player on the #Chiefs’ 90-man offseason roster has been assigned a jersey number with OTAs underway.

The Kansas City Chiefs kicked off Phase 3 of the NFL’s offseason workout program on Monday.

The team has updated its official roster with new jersey numbers ahead of organized team activities. Every player on the roster has now been assigned jersey numbers.

Typically, the NFL allows for duplicate jersey numbers during the offseason program with a like number on offense and a like number on defense. There are a few instances of that right now, but when they trim the offseason roster to 53 players, there won’t be any duplicate jersey numbers.

With all of that in mind, here’s the latest look at the Chiefs’ 90-man offseason roster by jersey number:

Colts’ 90-man roster by jersey number entering OTAs

With OTAs starting up Tuesday, here’s a look at the Colts’ roster by jersey number.

The Indianapolis Colts are set to begin OTAs on Tuesday, which means it’s time to take an updated look at the 90-man offseason roster.

There will be some changes throughout the coming months leading up to training camp but with so many storylines set to come out during spring practices, it’s best to have an idea of what number players are wearing.

Update: This list has been updated to include the addition of tight end Kaden Smith (No. 48), who was signed to the roster Wednesday.

As the Colts begin OTAs, here’s a look at the 90-man roster, sorted by jersey number:

Commanders release 2 players Friday

The Commanders made some roster moves Friday.

As the Washington Commanders opened rookie minicamp on Friday, they made two moves, freeing up two roster spots and getting the team to the league-mandated 90 players.

Veteran wide receiver Alex Erickson and linebacker Drew White were released Friday. Erickson, 30, is a seven-year NFL veteran who spent last season with Washington, where he appeared in two games, returning four punts for 25 yards. He spent most of the season on the practice squad.

White was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame in 2022. He suffered a knee injury in August and missed his rookie season. The Commanders released him Friday with a failed physical designation.

More roster moves could come after this weekend’s minicamp if the Commanders want to sign some of the players participating in tryouts. Washington had 35 players in camp on a tryout basis.

Packers still have 35 roster spots to fill before training camp

The Packers have 55 players under contract, meaning there are 35 spots to fill on the offseason 90-man roster.

Before teams whittle down their rosters to just 53, they first spend a few months building them up to 90 players for the start of offseason programs and training camp. For the Green Bay Packers, they have a lot of work to do in that regard.

At the moment, the Packers have 55 players under contract for the 2023 season, meaning that, in the coming months, 35 more players will be added to the team.

Including compensatory draft picks, Green Bay is projected to have 11 in total this year. When it comes to undrafted free agent signings, a team can really sign as many or as few players as they please. Last year, for example, the Packers made 14 initial post-draft signings.

Then there is free agency. From a salary cap perspective, the Packers are going to be limited in what they can spend and likely won’t be making any splash signings, they will have to utilize free agency to build their depth at several positions, which should include receiver, safety, and tight end to name a few. In 2022, Green Bay made seven free-agent additions during the first few weeks of free agency. It’s also important to keep in mind that a free-agent signing doesn’t mean that the player is brand new to the Packers either; it could be a player with an expired contract who returns.

Beyond the first month of free agency, the draft, and the initial wave of undrafted rookie signings, the Packers will, in all likelihood, add some players here and there through the months of May, June, and July to round out their 90-man roster. Last May specifically, Green Bay claimed Eli Wolf and Chris Slayton off waivers and signed Kobe Jones as well as Jack Coco. They then continued to churn the roster into late July, signing Dallin Leavitt along with making four other additions as well as four cuts right before training camp began.

Everything just described will take up precious salary cap space, which will be a limited resource for the Packers again. Although the roster will swell to 90 players, only the top-51 contracts count towards the salary cap prior to rosters being set before week one.

As of now, Green Bay’s top 51 contracts in terms of value have them sitting at $6.4 million under the salary cap after restructuring the contracts of Aaron Jones, Jaire Alexander, and Preston Smith. However, money spent in free agency, on the draft class and practice squad, as well as in-season, hasn’t been factored into that $6.5 million total, so more moves will have to be made to give the Packers the necessary operating room needed for a regular NFL season.

With 35 roster spots to fill, I imagine just about every position will be filled in some capacity in the coming months. Positions where the Packers could use a veteran presence include receiver, interior defensive lineman, safety, tight end, and potentially quarterback if Jordan Love is the starter. You can read more on the reasoning here. As far as the draft goes, each of those positions, minus quarterback, could be addressed in the early rounds as well, along with edge rusher. Adding competition at kicker and long-snapper should also be on the to-do list. Again, for a more in-depth look at why, click here.

As Brian Gutekunst has said in the past, roster building is a 365-day-a-year job, and Gutey is always churning the bottom portion of the roster. Naturally, just about all of the attention is on free agency and the early portions of the draft as we all search for upgrades for this Packers team. But overall, Green Bay still has a lot of roster spots to fill–35 to be exact. Some of the players added will make an impact. And others are there for training camp with the hope of making the practice squad.

Chiefs depth chart projection for 90-man offseason roster

Before the preseason arrives for the #Chiefs, our @goldmctNFL takes a crack at projecting the team’s depth chart for the 90-man offseason roster.

The Kansas City Chiefs will release their first unofficial depth chart for the 90-man offseason roster sometime next week ahead of the team’s preseason opener against the Chicago Bears. Before they do that, we’re taking a crack at projection.

In most cases, the holdovers from the 2021 NFL season will have a big advantage in our depth chart projection. Those players who’ve been working with the various first through fourth-team units with frequency in training camp will be assigned as such. Draft picks, free agents and undrafted free agents who have performed well in recent training camp practices might get a bump here and there.

With all of that in mind, here is our projection for the offseason 90-man roster’s depth chart:
