Numbers say 49ers WR trending toward All-Pro form despite slow start

Brandon Aiyuk was open a lot in Week 2. Brock Purdy has to start finding him.

It appears the San Francisco 49ers are quickly seeing some of the adversity generated when a wide receiver misses all of training camp.

Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and quarterback Brock Purdy haven’t been able to get on the same page in the 49ers’ first two games. Aiyuk, who missed all of training camp because of dispute over a long-term contract extension, has 10 targets so far this season. He’s hauled in six of them for 71 yards. His longest catch went for 22 yards.

Part of the blame can fall on his playing time. Through two weeks he’s played 73 percent of the 49ers’ offensive snaps. Last year he played in 82 percent. In 2022 he was at 91 percent.

There’s more to it than just playing time, and there appears to be more to it than just Aiyuk getting in playing shape. While playing shape may have been a problem in Week 1, peripheral stats indicate Purdy just didn’t get Aiyuk the ball in Week 2.

Pro Football Focus ran the numbers on separation for pass catchers through two weeks. They have a metric called ‘separation percentage’ which aims to measure “how often a receiver beats the coverage to get open rather than benefiting from a defense more focused on limiting yards after the catch or stopping them short of the first down,” according to their website.

Week 1 wasn’t good for Aiyuk. He created separation on only four of his 12 opportunities. Those numbers help paint the picture of why he earned only five targets.

Week 2 was substantially better. Per PFF he had 14 opportunities and gained separation on 12 of them. His 85.71 separation percentage was the sixth-best in the NFL in Week 2. Alas, the uptick in separation didn’t lead to an uptick in targets. Purdy threw him the ball only five times again.

This is something that has to get remedied immediately. All indications are that Aiyuk is trending quickly toward his All-Pro form. Purdy now needs to look his way with more frequency. That was always going to be the case, but there’s a dramatic uptick in urgency with Deebo Samuel joining Christian McCaffrey on the sidelines with a calf injury.

Purdy and Aiyuk need to get on the same page because the quicker they do, the quicker the 49ers can overcome injuries and solve some of the offensive issues that have plagued them on third down and in the red zone so far in 2024.

49ers superstar LB snubbed for award after monster game vs Vikings

The All-Pro LB forced a pair of turnovers, recorded a sack and led the 49ers in tackles on Sunday against the Vikings.

Despite the San Francisco 49ers’ rough loss to the Minnesota Vikings, All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner put together a memorable performance.

After notching a forced fumble and seven tackles against the New York Jets on Monday Night Football, the All-Pro linebacker continued his early Defensive Player of the Year campaign in Week 2 against the Vikings.

With the 49ers stalling offensively, Warner provided multiple sparks on the defensive side of the football. Not only did Warner jump a throw from Sam Darnold for a momentum-switching interception, the former BYU Cougar saved a would-be Vikings touchdown with a heroic forced fumble at the goal line against Aaron Jones.

Warner finished with a team-high nine tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss, two pass deflections, a quarterback hit, a forced fumble and an interception in the 49ers’ 23-17 loss to the Vikings.

Despite his impressive performance, Warner was not named Defensive Player of the Week in the NFC. Atlanta Falcons defensive back Jessie Bates earned the award for Week 2.

In a win on Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles, Bates notched 12 tackles, a tackle for loss, two pass deflections and a game-sealing interception in the final seconds of the fourth quarter against Jalen Hurts.

Detroit Lions pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson should also be in the conversation for Defensive Player of the Week. The former Michigan Wolverine sacked Baker Mayfield 4.5 times in the Lion’s loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday.

How 49ersโ€™ worst play vs Vikings went wrong

Ji’Ayir Brown explained what went wrong on Justin Jefferson’s 97-yard touchdown during the Vikings’ win over the 49ers on Sunday.

The San Francisco 49ers loss to the Minnesota Vikings will likely be headlined by a historic connection between former Niner Sam Darnold and his new star pass catcher Justin Jefferson.

After stopping the 49ers on fourth and goal at the goal line, the Vikings quickly took advantage with a bomb from Darnold to Jefferson. From their own 3-yard line, Darnold placed a perfect pass into the hands of Jefferson for a 97-yard touchdown.

Jefferson was able to slip behind both of the 49ers’ safeties on the play, Ji’Ayir Brown and George Odum. After the game, Brown took a bulk of the blame for the long touchdown and explained what went wrong on the play.

Iโ€™ve got to be better. I kind of left my safety hanging there. Yeah, I just got to be better there.

Iโ€™ve got Jefferson on an over. Heโ€™s got Jefferson on an up-and-out. Jefferson stemmed inside โ€” kind of slowed me down โ€” anticipating him going over, and he just took the roof off.

Darnold’s 97-yard pass to Jefferson will live in San Francisco’s record book as the longest touchdown pass against the 49ers in franchise history.

Darnold finished with 268 yards passing, two touchdowns and an interception against his former team. Before exiting the game early, Jefferson notched 133 yards receiving on four catches with a touchdown.

Jordan Mason caps epic 99-yard drive with touchdown

The 49ers running back stayed hot with a touchdown run against the Vikings in the fourth quarter.

With the San Francisco 49ers facing the chance of falling down 27-7, defensive captain Fred Warner came up with a big hit at the goal line to force a fumble against Minnesota Vikings running back Aaron Jones.

With another turnover forced by the hands of Warner, Kyle Shanahan’s offense went to work down 20-7 in the fourth quarter. Purdy orchestrated the 49ers’ best offensive drive of the game, pushing the ball down the field to set up a much-needed touchdown.

Jordan Mason stayed hot, punching in a 10-yard touchdown run to capitalize a 99-yard drive against the Vikings. Behind Mason’s score, the 49ers cut the Vikings lead to 20-14.

Brock Purdy finds George Kittle for TD strike vs. Vikings

George Kittle continued his hot start with a touchdown reception from Brock Purdy in the second quarter against the Vikings.

After a very quiet start, that included stops on fourth down, penalties and a blocked punt, the San Francisco 49ers offense woke up late in the second quarter after a clutch interception from Fred Warner on Sunday in Minnesota

With the Vikings leading 10-0, Brock Purdy helped orchestrate a drive down the field for the 49ers’ first score of the game. Warner’s diving interception set the 49ers up with solid field position to start their drive.

After a long gain from Purdy to Deebo Samuel, Jordan Mason hammered the ball down the field to set up first and goal for the 49ers.

On second and goal, Purdy delivered a short strike to George Kittle for a seven-yard touchdown.

49ers’ George Odum comes up with clutch PBU to force FG vs. Vikings

George Odum’s clutch pass breakup helped the 49ers force a field goal in the red zone against the Vikings.

The first domino to fall between the San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings in Week 2 came on a fourth-down punt. 49ers punter Mitch Wishnowsky had his punt blocked with under five minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Despite the Vikings opening the drive just outside the red zone, the 49ers defense stood strong. With the Vikings threatening on third-and-goal, Sam Darnold fired a pass to the back of the end zone for third-year wideout Jalen Nailor.

However, special teams ace George Odum was able to get his hand in a Darnold and Nailors window for a clutch pass breakup. Following Odum’s timely PBU, the Vikings were forced to settle for a field goal.

49ers injury update: Christian McCaffrey could go on IR

The 49ers All-Pro running back will now miss his second consecutive game due to an ankle/Achilles injury.

After missing the opening game of the 2024 season against the New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers rusher Christian McCaffrey is set miss his second consecutive game due to an ankle, Achilles injury.

On Friday, the 49ers officially ruled McCaffrey out of their first road game of the season against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Yet, McCaffrey’s stint on the sideline could be extended. On Friday, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters in Santa Clara that the injured reserve is something being considered for McCaffrey.

It’s something we’re considering now, yeah. Yesterday was his worst day. It’s on and off, but with yesterday, having the most pain, it’s something we’re going to be discussing here in the next 24 hours.

Via @NBCS49ers on Twitter:

McCaffery missed all of the preseason and most of training camp with the same injury. The Stanford product is coming off an All-Pro season with a career-high 1459 yards and 21 total touchdowns.

As long as McCaffrey is out, Jordan Mason will likely continue to assume a bulk of the starting running back responsibilities. In Week 1 against the Jets, Mason broke out with an impressive 147-yard rushing performance with a touchdown. Rookie Isaac Guerendo and veteran JJ Taylor will slide in behind Mason with McCaffrey sidelined.

The 49ers are set to meet the Vikings at 10 a.m. PT in Minnesota on Sunday.

49ers rising star CB talks trash to Vikings QB Sam Darnold

Whewwww spicy.

The Minnesota Vikings got the better of their matchup against the San Francisco 49ers in 2023.

That didn’t stop 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir from talking a little smack to his former teammate and Vikings starting quarterback Sam Darnold.

Lenoir after Thursday’s practice had some fun with the 49ers’ former backup quarterback during an interview in the locker room.

“Me and Sam, we had this connection,” Lenoir told reporters as he raised his hands to mimic catching a football. “He liked to throw the ball to me. So, this week we’re coming. He knows it.”

Lenoir continued with praise of his former teammate.

“I know he’s a talented player,” Lenoir said. “He’s gonna come ready to work. I know how he prepares. He gave us great looks when he played here with us. Just taking over the scout team, he was throwing dimes, so I know it’s gonna have to be tight, sticky coverage.”

Darnold didn’t get to see the field much for the 49ers in 2023, but he started his 2024 in Minnesota with a bang. He earned their starting job out of training camp and completed 19-of-24 throws for 208 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in a 28-6 Vikings win over the Giants.

Minnesota is a tough matchup for San Francisco, and a turnover may swing the game. Even if Darnold is good, the 49ers would love to see Lenoir rekindle that connection with the former 49ers QB to come up with a takeaway.

No egos in 49ers RB room after backupโ€™s huge game

Christian McCaffrey had praise for Jordan Mason’s breakout perfromance against the Jets on Monday Night Football.

With Christian McCaffrey missing Monday Night Football against the New York Jets, Kyle Shanahan’s offense leaned on backup running back Jordan Mason. In the season opener on primetime television, the undrafted running back out of Georgia Tech delivered a career-best performance.

Mason rumbled all over the Jets, dominating with a career-high 147 yards rushing with a touchdown on the way to leading the 49ers to their first win of the 2024 campaign, 32-19.

Following the game, the 49ers All-Pro rusher had nothing but praise for his teammate’s breakout effort against the Jets. McCaffrey told reporters in Santa Clara that he was proud of Mason.

I think with someone like him, man. I’m so proud of him. When you’re in a rhythm, you’re in a grove, you let him be. And he showed that. I was so pumped for him. Just everything he’s done all camp. He’s earned that and he balled out and it showed.

Congratulated him. We got a special room. He’s right there in the play and someone that is going to help this team a lot this year. I’m happy he’s in our room. We’re happy for him.
