49ers DL Arik Armstead calls on NFL to fix ‘trash’ MetLife Stadium turf

The San Francisco 49ers suffered a slew of injuries against the New York Jets on the poor turf at MetLife Stadium.

The 49ers’ 31-13 win over the Jets on Sunday at MetLife Stadium came with a heavy price. San Francisco suffered injuries to Jimmy Garoppolo, Raheem Mostert, Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas. While they weren’t all related to the turf at MetLife Stadium, a slew of other players on both sides were banged up because of the surface at the Jets’ home field.

For San Francisco they don’t get to escape it next week. They’re back at MetLife to take on the New York Giants who share a home stadium with the Jets.

49ers defensive lineman Arik Armstead didn’t take long after the game to say something about the field conditions. He tweeted this a few minutes after the clock hit 0:00.

Armstead’s postgame complaint wasn’t the first though. Head coach Kyle Shanahan after the game told reporters the turf was something players had an issue with before the contest.

There’s a slim chance anything major is done about the field conditions between Week 2 and Week 3, so the 49ers will have to deal with this same turf in a week.

Observations from 49ers’ injury-filled blowout victory over Jets

Observations from a rough win for the 49ers over the Jets.

The 49ers beat the Jets 31-13 in an ugly game that saw a number of key players go down with injuries. San Francisco moved to 1-1 on the season.

Here are our notes from throughout the contest.

– The 49ers are wearing their home reds on the road and it is a strange look.

– Jerick McKinnon fields the opening kickoff. He returned kick last week with Richie James Jr. out.

– Welp. That was fast. Toss right to Mostert who follows his blocks and goes 80 yards for a touchdown. Ross Dwelley and Charlie Woerner were the two tight ends on the right side. Mostert is fast, FYI. 49ers 7, Jets 0.

– Frank Gore is awesome. He plows ahead for a five-yard gain on his first carry of the game.

– DJ Jones and Solomon Thomas are the starters on the interior of the defensive line.

– Jimmy Garoppolo’s first throw of the game is to Jordan Reed who made a nice juggling catch. Brandon Aiyuk was in motion on the snap. Expecting more of that from the rookie.

– More third-down issues for the 49ers to open this one. Garoppolo is sacked on third-and-8 and came up limping pretty badly. It looks like Laken Tomlinson got beat for the sack. That one isn’t on the quarterback.

– Garoppolo is getting his right ankle taped during the 49ers’ second defensive possession.

– Nick Bosa is a really good run defender.

– A first down throw for Sam Darnold. Ahkello Witherspoon gets beat by Breshad Perriman.

– Kerry Hyder Jr. gets a tackle-for-loss. He had a strong showing in Week 1 as well.  The 49ers need a good game from him with Dee Ford out.

– Yikes. The 49ers pass rush gets home but Javon Kinlaw and Arik Armstead both whiff on sacks and Darnold runs ahead for a first down.

– Now Nick Bosa goes down. Just a disastrous start to the year from an injury perspective for the 49ers. He’s carted off.

– Solomon Thomas is down now. Unbelievable.

– The 49ers defense comes up with a sack by Arik Armstead to put the Jets in a third-and-long. They settle for a 41-yard field goal. 49ers 7. Jets 3.

– Wow. It was a 67-yard touchdown for Mostert but a holding penalty on Mike McGlinchey brings it back.

– Well there’s Garoppolo. The 49ers go empty and Tevin Coleman hauls in a 22-yard strike over the middle on a second-and-20. Getting more from Coleman this week would be huge.

– Brandon Aiyuk makes his first NFL reception by flashing in front of Kendrick Bourne to make an eight-yard catch on a third-and-6. Garoppolo does a nice job escaping pressure and extending the play to his right and then throwing a strike on the run.

– Another third-down conversion. This time it’s Jordan Reed for 11 yards on a third-and-9. He’s been more involved than he was in Week 1.

– It looks like Garoppolo is limping pretty bad after a throw to Mostert.

– Another third-down conversion. This one results in a touchdown. Garoppolo hits Reed on a short throw, and then Reed shows his athleticism to avoid a tackle, tiptoe the sideline and get in. 49ers 14, Jets 3.

– The 49ers defense is struggling to get off the field on third down. New York has started five-for-seven.

– There’s a third and fourth-down stop. The Jets go for it on fourth-and-1 from the 49ers’ 20 and Fred Warner gets in the backfield to blow the play up. That’s a huge stop for a depleted defense.

– Oof. A deep shot from Garoppolo to Bourne falls incomplete. It was a nice throw, Bourne just couldn’t quite haul it in against good coverage. Would’ve been a great catch.

– There’s Bourne on a third-and-3. He makes the catch for plenty, but turns it upfield for an 18-yard pickup. Bourne is money on third downs.

– Another third down conversion. This one to Trent Taylor for nine on a third-and-2.

– Garoppolo tries making a back-foot throw to Aiyuk on a third-and-8, but it falls incomplete. A roughing the passer extends their drive though and puts them on New York’s 21 with under a minute to go in the half.

– Reed scores again on a third down. On third-and-goal from the 4, Garoppolo finds Reed at the 2, and the big tight end fights his way in for his second score of the game and a 21-3 lead before the half.

– Garoppolo heads to the locker room a bit early.  So does Mostert. Not great.

– That is a bad sign. Garoppolo didn’t join the team coming out of the locker room. Per the Fox broadcast, Garoppolo is getting X-rays at the half and they’ll evaluate him to see if he’ll return.

– Jimmie Ward is awesome. He stuffs a quick throw on third down short.

– Nick Mullen is in to start the second half. Garoppolo and Mostert are both out for the game.

– Wow. Jerick McKinnon on a third-and-31 goes for 55 yards. That’s an unbelievable run that helps set up points for San Francisco. A Robbie Gould 46-yard field goal puts the 49ers up three touchdowns. 49ers 24, Jets 3

– This defense has been flying since Bosa and Thomas went down. Arik Armstead forces a Jets punt with a batted pass as New York tried to set up a screen.

– And the 49ers drive ends on an interception. Mullens didn’t step into his throw and fires high and behind McKinnon. The Jets get the ball at the 49ers’ 22-yard-line. If the Jets are going to come back it’s because of bad turnovers like that.

– Kerry Hyder is slow to get up now. This game can’t end fast enough.

– The Jets just kicked a field goal from inside the 10 with 2:52 left in the third quarter to make it a 24-6 game. That doesn’t make a ton of sense. Good work by the 49ers defense to get a stop after the Mullens turnover.

– Some good news! Hyder is back.

– The third quarter mercifully ends. These final 15 minutes need to fly.

– Bourne hauls one in for 24 yards. He’s having a nice game. That was his fourth catch for 67 yards.

– Aiyuk again with a nice catch on a short throw. He does a great job to break a tackle and find more yards. He’s now at 21 yards on two catches.

– An exclamation point for the 49ers. McKinnon finds pay dirt from 18 yards out and the 49ers are up four scores. 49ers 31, Jets 6

– Dre Greenlaw is down after the kickoff. He got up and limped off under his own power.

– The Jets try on a fourth-and-7. Chris Hogan was open, but Emmanuel Moseley does a nice job to shove him out and break up the pass before Hogan could get his feet down.

– Justin Skule takes over at left tackle for Trent Williams. That’s probably the right move for the 49ers to get Williams off the field. Hroniss Grasu is in at center for Ben Garland and sixth-round pick Colton McKivitz is working at right guard for Daniel Brunskill.

– The Jets score with 1:23 left. A person named Braxton Berrios beats Witherspoon. Richard Sherman can’t come back soon enough. 49ers 31, Jets 13

– Kneel downs. Ball game. That was rough.

Exclamation point: Jerick McKinnon scores 18-yard touchdown

The 49ers went up 31-6 on the New York Jets behind Jerick McKinnon’s first rushing touchdown since 2017.

Injuries couldn’t stop the 49ers from rolling against the Jets in New York. Jerick McKinnon put an exclamation point on a dominant showing from San Francisco with an 18-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

That’s his second touchdown of the season, and his first rushing touchdown since Oct. 29, 2017.

WATCH: 49ers, Jerick McKinnon convert 3rd-and-31 vs. Jets

Jerick McKinnon took a handoff 55 yards on a third-and-31 to give San Francisco a first down vs. the New York Jets.

The 49ers offense started the second half going the wrong direction. They faced a third-and-31 with Nick Mullens under center. Head coach Kyle Shanahan called a toss play just trying to get a little room for the punt team. Jerick McKinnon had other ideas.

A 55-yard run on a third-and-31 is pretty incredible, and it helped set up a 46-yard field goal that put San Francisco up 24-3.

Don’t blink: Raheem Mostert goes 80 yards for TD on opening play vs. Jets

Raheem Mostert took the 49ers’ first play of the game against the Jets 80 yards for a touchdown.

It didn’t take long for the 49ers offense to get going against the Jets. Their first play from scrimmage was a toss to Raheem Mostert. The run was well-blocked, Mostert got to the corner, and then he was gone.

Mostert has a knack for ripping off big plays like this. He took a quick throw 76 yards for a touchdown against the Cardinals last week as well.

49ers favored to bounce back with win over Jets

The San Francisco 49ers are favored to get a big bounce-back win over the Jets.

The 49ers’ season opener against the Arizona Cardinals ended in disaster. Despite a poor Week 1 showing, San Francisco is favored by 7 points to bounce back on the road against the New York Jets according to Bet MGM.

It makes sense that the 49ers are heavy favorites after their rough outing in the opener. One game doesn’t define a team, and San Francisco was in the Super Bowl just last season. They’re still on track to be very good. Jimmy Garoppolo’s bad day doesn’t erase all the very good showings he had a year ago either.

One thing worth keeping an eye on is George Kittle’s health. The 49ers’ offense is much less dangerous on the ground and in the air when he’s not on the field, and he’s dealing with a knee sprain. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the line move a little if he’s officially ruled out.

On the other hand, even without Kittle, the 49ers should be favored big. The Jets were a couple Bills fumbles from getting beat by three-plus scores last week. They’ll also be without running back Le’Veon Bell, and could be without leading wide receiver Jamison Crowder who’s dealing with a hamstring injury. Their roster was already lacking for talent. Now injuries and opt outs have probably left them without enough talent to hang with the 49ers, even without Kittle.

This is a game San Francisco has to have if they’re going to right the ship. It’ll still count as a win if they don’t cover, but they shouldn’t have a problem pulling away by more than a touchdown.

Can Mohamed Sanu contribute for 49ers vs. Jets?

Mohamed Sanu could offer a needed jolt to the 49ers’ passing game Sunday vs. the New York Jets.

The 49ers badly need reinforcements at wide receiver after injuries left them with just three healthy players at the position to end Week 1, and they were set to have only four healthy players there going into their second game with the Jets.

To help bolster their receiving corps, San Francisco agreed to terms with veteran pass catcher Mohamed Sanu, who spent the 2016 season in Atlanta with Kyle Shanahan.

This isn’t a scenario though where Sanu is only needed for depth. The 49ers need him to contribute right away, especially if tight end George Kittle is unavailable. The combination of Kendrick Bourne, Dante Pettis and Trent Taylor had just four catches for 41 yards in the season opener. Rookie wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk missed Week 1 with a hamstring injury and should return vs. the Jets, but his ability to contribute in his NFL debut after a shortened offseason is uncertain.

Shanahan on Wednesday in a pre-practice conference all told reporters that while Sanu won’t be able to practice until Friday due to the NFL’s COVID-19 testing rules, he should be able to suit up and play snaps thanks to his familiarity with the system and technology.

“That’s the benefit of being with someone before, that he’s familiar with the offense,” Shanahan said. “He only had one year away from it and did some very similar verbiage and stuff in Atlanta, even after I left. So, he’s familiar with it. It’s good that we got him done so he can at least listen to our meetings. He can’t be here, but he has an idea of the game plan, can see it all. He’ll be able to get there out at practice, which is a half-speed practice anyways. Mo will do his part. He’s a pro. He’ll learn his responsibilities, what he has to do and basically the decision of whether he’ll play or not probably is going to depend with the health of our other receivers and how that goes this week.”

The 49ers are confident in what they’re getting in Sanu. Despite a lackluster eight games with the Patriots last year after they made a midseason trade for him and then his subsequent release following this year’s training camp, Shanahan said the team didn’t get a chance to work Sanu out before negotiating a one-year contract with him. Again, technology aided the process.

“It was too hard to bring guys in for a workout and stuff. It just takes too many other days,” Shanahan said. “So, that’s what was good with being familiar with Mo, that he could get here, start studying the playbook, allow him in Zoom meetings. So, if need be, if we need the numbers out there, he’ll be ready.”

It’s probably unrealistic to expect Sanu to start and play 80 percent of the snaps if Aiyuk, Bourne, Pettis and Taylor are all healthy. However, if the 49ers find themselves in an offensive rut similar to the one they were in over the final four quarters in Week 1, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Sanu get some playing time to try and help kickstart the passing game.
