New Broncos RB Audric Estimé aims to make fans forget his 40-time

Audric Estimé ran the slowest 40-yard dash among RBs at the NFL combine, but that didn’t stop the Broncos from drafting him. This is why.

Notre Dame running back Audric Estimé had a performance to forget at the NFL combine in March.

Estimé ran a 40-yard dash in 4.71 seconds, the slowest 40-time recorded among running backs in Indianapolis. That didn’t stop the Denver Broncos from picking Estimé in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL draft last week.

“You have ups and downs in life,” Estimé said during a call with reporters last Saturday. “I just saw it as a representation of life. I knew there were going to be ups and downs in the process. I just need to stay right in the middle and not let one thing affect my whole process.

“I did not run the time I expected to run. I had been running a lot faster through my time leading up to the 40-yard dash, but that is over now. It is time for me to play football, and I am ready to be a Bronco and play high-level football.”

Nobody will care about Estimé’s combine performance if he makes plays on Sundays. He’s more of a bruiser than a speedster, and there are roles for that type of running back in the NFL. Broncos coach Sean Payton described Estimé as a “physical runner.”

“[H]e’s strong,” Payton said. “I think he has really good vision, contact balance. He was one of the higher-graded backs after contact. He’s a physical player. … So, [he is a] first- and second-down [back], physical, real smart, tough, real good teammate. They love him at the school, and he kind of grew on us as the process went.”

Payton has had success with a variety of running backs in his career ranging from Reggie Bush and Alvin Kamara to Mark Ingram and Latavius Murray.

“I am just looking forward to being able to learn from him,” Estimé said of playing for Payton. “My goal coming into the NFL is to learn, excel and become my full version of myself. I believe he has the attributes to help me achieve that.”

Estimé rushed 210 times for 1,341 yards and 18 touchdowns last fall. He now joins a Denver backfield that already includes Javonte Williams, Samaje Perine and Jaleel McLaughlin.

A few weeks after the combine, Estimé ran a 40-yard dash in the 4.56-4.59 range at Notre Dame’s pro day, a notable improvement from the combine. He’ll now join an offense that also added quarterback Bo Nix and wide receiver Troy Franklin during the draft last week.

“They are really good players,” Estimé said of Nix and Franklin. “I saw them play in college. I am just excited to come in and work with them. Hopefully, we can be together for a couple years and take the championship together.”

Packers clocked rookie WR Jayden Reed at 4.37 in the 40-yard dash

Running 4.37 at 191 pounds would put Packers rookie WR Jayden Reed in the 97th percentile for speed.

The Green Bay Packers clocked receiver Jayden Reed at 4.37 seconds in the 40-yard dash before taking him in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft.

The impressive straight-line speed is one part of why the Packers think Reed can play both in the slot and on the perimeter at the next level.

“He’s strong and he’s fast. He’s got exceptional strength for a smaller-framed player. And then he can run. He’s got good tempo. I believe we had him at 4.37,” vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan said. “More importantly, he plays fast. He’s quick. He can get out of breaks. Obviously outside the numbers, speed comes into play, but inside, he’s strong and he can get in and out of breaks, which will help him get separation.”

The Packers think Reed’s versatility and speed make him an ideal complement to Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, two other speedsters who can threaten deep but also play inside.

Reed was officially timed at 4.45 seconds in the 40 at the combine, but the Packers generally prefer their own measurements on players.

Among receivers, a time of 4.37 seconds would have ranked tied for the third-fastest in the 40 at the combine.

According to Relative Athletic Score, 4.37 seconds at 191 pounds (pro day weight) puts Reed in the 97th percentile for speed.

While quickness is king from the slot, speed rules on the outside, where a receiver must threaten down the field to soften coverages and create separation on a variety of routes.

“I do think he’s very good in the slot, but I do think because of his speed he’ll be able to play outside,” general manager Brian Gutekunst said.

Reed caught 11 passes thrown 20 yards or more in the air last season.

The speed is also a factor on returns. At Michigan State and Western Michigan, Reed returned three punts for scores. The Packers believe he will give them another special teams option, especially on punt returns.

The Packers are building one of the fastest offenses in football, especially in the passing game. Watson (4.36), Reed (4.37), Bo Melton (4.34) and Jeff Cotton (4.38) all ran under 4.4, Doubs and Samori Toure both ran in the 4.4-range at pro days and rookie tight ends Luke Musgrave (4.61) and Tucker Kraft (4.68) both ran fast times at the combine.

WATCH: Houston WR Tank Dell runs fastest looking 4.50 at the NFL combine

Houston Cougars WR Tank Dell looked swift at the NFL combine during his 40-yard dash, even though his official time was 4.50.

Such was the case for Houston Cougars wideout Tank Dell at the NFL combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Daytona Beach Mainland High School product ran a 4.50 unofficial time for his 40-yard dash Sunday evening.

Dell had a productive 2022 utilizing his speed as he caught 109 passes for 1,398 yards and 17 touchdowns through 13 games.

WATCH: Texas A&M RB Devon Achane runs 4.32 at NFL combine

Texas A&M RB Devon Achane ran a 4.32 in his 40-yard dash at the NFL combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

College football became familiar with the speed of Texas A&M running back Devon Achane throughout the season.

The Missouri City Thurgood Marshall High School product told reporters March 4 that he wouldn’t be disappointed if he failed to break the combine speed record as he had to keep his head clear.

I won’t be disappointed not breaking the record,” said Achane. “I still got drills to do. So, I’ll be up the whole time.”

Achane managed to beat the 40-time of one of his favorite running backs in the San Francisco 49ers’ Christian McCaffrey, who ran a 4.48 in 2017.

I feel like I can do what he do,” Achane said. “I can run the ball. I can catch. I wasn’t training with any NFL players, but I was training with other prospects this year though.”

Achane generated 1,102 yards and eight touchdowns on 196 carries while catching 36 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns through 10 games, all of which he started.

The Houston Texans did not meet with Achane at the NFL combine.

Redmond is one of seven Oklahoma Sooners who will participate in the scouting weekend in Indianapolis, working through drills for NFL teams. And it was a good day.

The Sooners’ defensive tackle showed off his athleticism by leading or finishing in the top two of each event at his position. Redmond had a solid career at the University of Oklahoma. He led the Sooners in sacks back in 2019 as a redshirt freshman before opting out of the 2020 COVID season.

Over the course of his Sooners’ career, he recorded 71 total tackles, 31.5 tackles for loss, and 14 sacks over three seasons.

With good production and a fantastic showing at the NFL combine, Jalen Redmond is a player that will begin shooting up mock drafts in the coming weeks.

Tyquan Thornton may have broken John Ross’s NFL combine record with an absurd 40-yard dash

WOW!

Tyquan Thornton may just have NFL history on his hands after this blazing fast 40-yard dash.

In the midst of the 2022 NFL combine, Thornton — a wide receiver from Baylor — sprinted out an absurd unofficial time of 4.21 seconds, which would best wide receiver John Ross III’s time of 4.22 seconds from 2017. We’ve seen some incredibly wild times over the years, but if official, Thornton will have knocked Ross from that pedestal after five years atop it.

Not only that, this wide receiver class is set to be the fastest ever in NFL history, with 12 wideouts hitting under 4.4 seconds, just a mind blowing number. Here’s Thornton’s unofficial 4.21 40-yard dash run from Thursday.

What a run! And the time turned heads all around in the NFL world, as Patrick Mahomes even had a response to Thornton’s potential record.

What an absolute masterclass of talent we just saw. Bravo Thornton!
