2025 CB Cobey Sellers explains why he chose Texas A&M over Oklahoma

After choosing Texas A&M over Oklahoma, 2025 4-star cornerback Cobey Seller’s explains his choice

Texas A&M’s 2025 recruiting class gained its tenth commitment on Saturday afternoon. According to multiple recruiting analysts, four-star cornerback Cobey Sellers chose the Aggies over Oklahoma and Texas after several months of being a significant favorite to land with the Sooners.

Set to enter his senior season at Shadow Creek HS, new Aggies head coach Mike Elko reportedly targeted Sellers since taking over the program in November, quickly developing a lasting relationship with the versatile Pearland, Texas native. After his commitment among his family and friends, Sellers discussed with On3’s Chad Simmons what transpired in the final months before his announcement:

“For the longest time, I felt like Oklahoma was the right fit for me,” Sellers stated. “Texas A&M cam in, showed me love, I took a couple of visits and decided they were the best fit for me. I made my final decision about three weeks ago.”

Outside of the favorable commute, Sellers clearly did his research regarding Mike Elko’s defensive background, especially his one season as Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator in 2017:

“Coach Elko coaches Kyle Hamilton at Notre Dame. He and Coach Peterson know how to coach and develop defensive backs. Coach Peterson offered me last summer and recruited me when he was at Kansas. We had a great relationship, so as soon as he moved to A&M, I game them a chance and knowing he and Coach Elko can coach guys at my position factored into my decision.”

Cobey Sellers’ beleif in Texas A&M’s coaching staff is a good sign heading into a busy recruiting summer.

What Texas A&M’s 2025 defensive back class looks like after Cobey Sellers commitment

Texas A&M’s 2025 defensive back class is shaping up to be special after four-star CB Cobey Seller’s commitment

It’s no surprise that once Mike Elko became Texas A&M Football’s new head coach last November, fixing the cornerback room as soon as the thick of the offseason arrived was paramount, adding eight defensive backs, including five cornerbacks, through the transfer portal.

With an eye on preparing for the future, Elko and his staff have already landed three defensive back prospects in the 2025 recruiting class. The group is led by four-star cornerback Cobey Sellers out of Pearland, Texas. Like Aggies’ star safety Bryce Anderson, Sellers played quarterback throughout his career at Shadow Creek HS.

Sellers joins four-star cornerback/safety Deyjhon Pettaway and speedy three-star cornerback Jamar Beal-Gaines, all of whom possess the length, speed, and versatility required to thrive in Elko and new A&M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman’s system. Here is how they rank out in the 2025 cycle, according to 247Sports:

  • Four-star CB Cobey Sellers: 124th-ranked prospect, 14th-ranked cornerback prospect, 20th-ranked prospect in Texas.
  • Four-star CB/S Deyjhon Pettaway: 241st-ranked prospect, 23rd-ranked safety prospect, 36th-ranked prospect in Texas.
  • Four-star CB Jamar Beal-Goines: 68th-ranked cornerback prospect,  5th-ranked prospect in Arizona (ran sub-4.3 40-yard dash)

With a busy recruiting summer ahead, Texas A&M will likely add several more additions to the future defensive backfield.

2025 4-star CB Cobey Sellers has committed to Texas A&M

Texas A&M has landed a commitment for 4-star cornerback Cobey Sellers!

Boom! Texas A&M has landed its 11th commitment in the 2025 recruiting class. Four-star cornerback Cobey Sellers becomes the tenth prospect to land with the program and the first this month.

Announcing his intentions on his Instagram page on Saturday afternoon, Sellers is one of the more versatile athletes in the class. He played quarterback for most of his high school career at Shadow Creek HS in Pearland, Texas, but will likely transition to cornerback once he makes his way to College Station in 2025.

As I said, Sellers’ versatility is unquestioned, playing at quarterback, cornerback, and special teams during his 2023 junior season, throwing for 956 yards and 17 touchdowns, but only accounted for 12 tackles and a forced fumble on defense due to his offensive responsibilities.

According to 247Sports, Sellers is currently positioned as a top prospect in the 2025 class, ranking 124th overall, 14th among cornerbacks, and 20th in Texas.

Seller’s length, speed, high football intellect, and athleticism were a no-brainer for new head coach Mike Elko. His on-field ability is similar to that of current Aggies star safety Bryce Anderson, who also played quarterback in high school.

Congratulations to Cobey on his commitment!
