Celtics rumored to be interested in Kelly Olynyk, Delon Wright, Andre Drummond as trade targets

A number of intriguing players have been linked to the Celtics.

The rumor mill is heating up as the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline draws nearer to the Feb. 8 cutoff on moving players between teams. A number of intriguing players have been linked to the Boston Celtics as that team looks to bolster its bench rotation ahead of the 2024 NBA playoffs.

Former Celtics like Utah Jazz center Kelly Olynyk have reportedly been of interest for the Celtics, but his contract structure would make for a difficult swap. Others, like Washington Wizards guard Delon Wright, make enough that a deal would be hard — but not impossible. Still others, like Chicago Bulls veteran big man Andre Drummond, are affordable and perhaps gettable, but are likely to have plenty of other suitors to beat out.

The hosts of NBC Sports Boston’s “Arbella Early Edition” linked up with the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn to talk over Boston trade buzz.

Should the Boston Celtics try to trade for the Brooklyn Nets’ Lonny Walker IV?

Does Walker offer anything Pritchard does not?

Should the Boston Celtics try to trade for the Brooklyn Nets’ Lonny Walker IV ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? They could certainly use a bit more scoring off the bench, but how is the fit of Walker’s game with what Boston would need from him in such a role? Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley recently weighed in on this question, and was not impressed with the potential of such a pairing despite the Nets wing being linked to Boston in recent reporting.

“His production is erratic, but his good nights can be hugely helpful,” writes Buckley. “He has netted 20-plus points six times this season, and he logged fewer than 28 minutes in all but one of those tilts. However, he is basically a (6-foot-4) scoring specialist.”

“What are the chances he could actually crack the playoff rotation?” asks the B/R analyst, and while we are higher on that potentiality, we have to admit, it wouldn’t likely be the minutes he has been used to in Brooklyn.

Buckley asks us “what would make Walker’s quick-strike scoring the better choice than Pritchard’s superior shooting and ball-control?”, and it’s a fair question. “Walker is bigger and a better athlete, sure, but his physical tools have never translated to consistent defense.”

That a 6-foot-1 guard already on Boston’s roster is a better defender and less prone to miss time injured has the B/R analyst suggesting the Celtics stay clear, and we concur.

What do we think the Boston Celtics should do at the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline?

Owners of an open roster spot and a $6.2 million traded player exception created from signing and trading Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks, the Celtics seem poised to do SOMETHING — but what?

What do we think the Boston Celtics should do at the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline? Owners of an open roster spot and a $6.2 million traded player exception created from signing and trading Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks, the Celtics seem poised to do SOMETHING — but what?

CLNS Media reporter Bobby Manning recently weighed in from a recent Celtics practice where Boston head coach Joe Mazzulla and Celtics point guard Derrick White hoped for a quiet trade deadline. Mazzulla told team president Brad Stevens that he doesn’t believe Boston needs a move and though they talk daily, they’ve agreed on the importance of preserving the locker room past deadline day on Feb. 8 at 3pm ET.

Can the Celtics still do something small that helps them?

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what the latest “Garden Report” podcast has to say about that question.

New trade rumor has Celtics eyeing two NBA vets ahead of deadline

Could the Celtics swing a trade for either of these NBA vets ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline?

The NBA trade deadline is this Thursday, February 8, and the Boston Celtics have reportedly been active in looking to add some bench depth to the team’s depth chart. According to Yahoo Sports reporter Jake Fischer, the Celtics are eyeing two veterans in particular who could help round out the roster with the postseason on the horizon.

Fischer reported Otto Porter Jr of the Toronto Raptors could be a viable option for the Celtics. Likewise, Brooklyn Nets guard Lonnie Walker IV is also a name to keep an eye on. Either could provide an upgrade to Boston’s bench, as well as offer injury insurance.

The Celtics have a traded player exception worth approximately $6.25 million thanks to the sign-and-trade deal that sent Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks. This gives Boston a little more flexibility in bringing in a player without needing to send out too much salary.

Predicting what the Celtics will do at the 2024 NBA trade deadline

Bigger moves are probably off the table. “That doesn’t mean Boston will stand pat, though,” writes B/R.

What will the Boston Celtics do at the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline? We have some clues, between the rumbles we are hearing in the media and what we have heard from Celtics team president Brad Stevens, who let it be known a bigger forward was a priority to add to the rotation.

But bigger moves are probably off the table, as Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley notes. “The Celtics simply don’t have the funds to reel in a player capable of cracking their top seven,” he recently suggested. “Even bumping Payton Pritchard down a spot is probably too great of a challenge for anyone who falls within the franchise’s price range.”

“That doesn’t mean Boston will stand pat, though,” writes the B/R analyst. “Teams this close to the title should leave nothing to chance, and the Celtics don’t need to.”

“Not when they have that trade exception, an open roster spot and enough draft picks to get calls back from anyone,” opines Buckley. “They seem more likely to target a wing than a big—though a center could be targeted on the buyout market—and players like Cedi Osman and John Konchar could make tons of sense for this team.”

“If Boston gets a deal done by the deadline, look for a pickup of this variety,” he offers. This lines up with our understanding of the situation, though a bigger forward able to play down to the 3 or up to the 5 would be near the top of our list.

What are some realistic Boston Celtics trade targets ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline?

We are just a little less than two days away from the end of the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline.

We are just a little less than two days away from the end of the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline, with the Boston Celtics and the rest of the league looking to make moves to improve their teams in whatever goals that ball club has. In the case of the Celtics, that would be hanging Banner 18, and with an open roster spot, a $6.2 million traded player exception and plenty of contracts in the deep rotation to move, Boston is well-positioned.

With names like Kelly Olynyk and Delon Wright floating around as potential trade targets that the Celtics would truthfully find difficult to make the salary work, are there more realistic options out there? What about the often-floated big man target, Andre Drummond? Or a player entirely outside of recent rumbles?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Still Poddable” podcast sorted through the options on a recent episode.

Why the Boston Celtics should avoid trading for Toronto’s Otto Porter

“Even on Boston’s budget, it can find someone more trustworthy than Porter,” writes B/R.

There have been a handful of analysts floating a trade proposal that would send Toronto Raptors small forward Otto Porter, Jr. to the Boston Celtics ahead of the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline. But not all league analysts think that’s a wise move for Boston.

Among them is Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley, who writes that as Celtics team president Brad Stevens and the rest of the Celtics’ front office “sift through the bargain bin, it’s possible Otto Porter Jr. might warrant a second glance. He’s a 6-foot-8 swingman who can line up anywhere along the frontcourt, plus he has championship experience and a career 39.7 3-point percentage to boot.”

“If Boston makes a move for a depth piece, though, it will want to find a reliable reserve,” notes the B/R analyst.

“Porter simply can’t be that due to a lengthy injury history,” recounts Buckley. “He played fewer than 30 games in three of the past four seasons, and he’s only made 15 appearances in this one.”

“Even on Boston’s budget, it can find someone more trustworthy than Porter,” he suggests, and we are inclined to agree. Even if healthy, it is unclear that Porter can provide better options on either end than players already on the roster.

Top Boston Celtics trade targets ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline

What will the Celtics do ahead of the deadline, if anything?

The Boston Celtics have designs on contention and an open roster spot, meaning they are all but certain to do something to fill that roster spot, and quite possibly before the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline. They could sign a free agent or a buyout player to fill it, or elevate a two way player like Neemias Queta to a full roster spot.

They could also absorb a contract or two into the Grant Williams traded player exception worth $6.2 million, depending on what went out. And there are a number of names out there tied to Boston, like John Konchar, Andre Drummond, Torrey Craig, and Kris Dunn. What will the Celtics do ahead of the deadline, if anything?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast took some time to talk about Boston’s deadline plans, and what they might be.

Ex-Celtics forward Danilo Gallinari ‘being monitored’ as Los Angeles Lakers trade target

Gallinari has slowed a bit since returning from the ACL tear that kept him from ever suiting up for Boston, but can still offer some help.

Former Boston Celtics backup big man Danilo Gallinari has been on the radar of one of the Celtics’ biggest rivals ahead of the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline, according to new reporting from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.

Per Scotto, Gallo, “who’s continued to be a knockdown 3-point shooter while playing minutes at the four and small ball five at times in the final year of his contract,” is being monitored by rival front offices as a potential trade target. “The Lakers are among the teams who’ve checked in on Gallinari’s price tag to acquire him,” relates the H/H reporter of the former Celtics’ trade market.

Gallinari has slowed a bit since returning from the ACL tear that kept him from ever suiting up for Boston, but can still offer some long-distance shooting and a little passing and rebounding off the bench.

There is a non-zero chance Gallinari could end up a buyout candidate as well.
